Shopkins Sales Reach a Record High in the UK

Bulldog Licensing revealed that in October the Shopkins collectible brand had its best week of sales. The brand released the Shopkins Series 6-Chef Club the same month, which pushed year-to-date sales to more than 5 million units. Retail sales for this year are expected to reach £120 million, which is double the figure from the previous year. Additionally, the Chef Club DVD from Universal is at No. 4 on the kids’ charts.
Shopkins products are available in multiple categories through its licensees including party goods from Gemma; apparel from Fashion UK; nightwear and underwear from Aykroyds TDP; lunchware, tableware, drinkware, and lighting from Spearmark; collectible and trading cards from Topps; headwear, scarves, sunglasses, and more from VMC, stationery from Blueprint; bedding, inflatable chairs, and beanbags from Character World; greeting cards and calendars from Danilo; magazines from DJ Murphy; games from Winning Moves; health and beauty products from H&A; and plush from Whitehouse Leisure.

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of George L Medina of Intercontinental Licensing in New York. 
With 60 years experience, and still working well into his 90s, George was the longest-serving member of the licensing community around the world. He founded Intercontinental in 1965 and the company grew to become one of the oldest and largest international art licensing, reproduction rights, and design houses in the world.
For over 40 years George sold and licensed one of the largest collections of decorative designs, illustrations, and photography to manufacturers of consumer goods such as greeting cards, gift ware, gift bags, calendars, private labels, scholastics, tins, home wares, apparel and tabletop decor. In all over 30,000 different designs were sold selected from publishers of greeting cards, gift wrapping, stationary, calendars, prints and posters which are under exclusive contract to us. Concept collections were created for the company by leading artists for exclusive licensing based on up-to-date trends.
Always ready to impart his extensive knowledge and experience, George will be sadly missed by all of us who knew him.

FremantleMedia Kids & Family, Butlin’s Partner for Danger Mouse Live Shows

FremantleMedia Kids & Family and Butlin’s partnered for Danger Mouse shows at Butlin’s seaside resorts. Beginning this Easter, Butlin’s Danger Mouse show will run twice per family break for two years, for a total of 724 shows with an average audience of 1,500 per show.
The 50-minute production will feature all the characters from the show, dancers from Butlin’s, and a stage prop version of the Mark IV Danger Car. Danger Mouse merchandise will also be available in Butlin’s shops.

New Series of Thomas & Friends and Movie Special to Launch Exclusively on Discovery Kids Latin America

Thomas the Tank Engine, is gearing up for his biggest international adventure yet; Thomas & Friends special The Great Race will premiere exclusively on Discovery Kids Latin America, as well as the latest series 20 of Thomas & Friends throughout the month of December on its different feeds. This marks the 8th CGI season of the show on Discovery Kids with all new episodes for Latin American fans in Spanish and Portuguese.
The new Thomas & Friends 60-minute movie, The Great Race, is the 11th feature film for the iconic blue engine. Along the way, he meets interesting and fun new trains from all over the world including: India’s Ashima, Belgium’s Axel, China’s Yong Bao, Russia’s Ivan, France’s Etienne, Italy’s Gina, Australia’s Shane and Latin America’s Raul (Brazil) and Carlos (Mexico).
The movie had its theatrical premiere in Mexico City last October, across 30 cinemas nationwide and a red carpet premiere with the participation of celebrity musician, Leonardo de Lozanne.

Sesame Workshop Names HeadStart Regional Toy Licensee for Australia and New Zealand

Sesame Workshop named HeadStart International as its new regional toy licensee for Australia and New Zealand. HeadStart will create a range of Sesame Street plush across price points with major retailers.
Haven, Sesame Workshop’s licensing representative in the territories, helped broker the deal and will continue to implement Sesame Street’s overall brand strategy and licensing programs in the market.

Character World Launches Rogue One Range

Character World has strengthened its Star Wars portfolio with the addition of new bedding featuring characters from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The action-packed movie is the first in a string of stand-alone Star Wars films. It tells the story of a group of rebels who steal the plans for the Death Star and is set just before the events of the original 1977 Star Wars movie.
The Manchester-based global textiles business has designed and produced a Rogue One bedding set that will be available to retailers throughout the UK, as well as online through Amazon.

Genius Brands Names Margaret Loesch as Executive Chairman of Kid Genius Cartoon Channel

Genius Brands International Inc. named children's and family media executive Margaret Loesch as executive chairman of its Kid Genius Cartoon Channel. Loesch will provide counsel to newly promoted channel president Deb Pierson, as well as expand the platform.
Loesch comes with four decades of experience working with children's broadcasting and family entertainment with brands including Smurfs, My Little Pony, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, X-Men, Jim Henson's Muppet Babies, Animaniacs, and Transformers. Loesch will collaborate with Pierson to advise on the development of channel brand strategy, ways to expand its coverage, and work to build advertiser participation.

Matt Feiner Named CEO of SG Companies

SG Companies announced the retirement of Bernie Leifer, effective Jan. 1. Leifer, who joined the company more than 35 years ago, named Matt Feiner as his successor and will transition him to the role of chairman. 
Feiner has more than 25 years of experience in the footwear industry. He most recently spent six years as SVP/GM of Stride Rite’s Wholesale Division, a division of Wolverine World Wide. Prior to Stride Rite, Feiner held several sales, product, and merchandising positions at Reebok.

Paddington Bear Brand Building on Success in Italy with Maurizio Distefano

Maurizio Distefano (MD Licensing) has been appointed by The Copyrights Group to manage the licensing programme in Italy for Paddington Bear, the internationally loved children’s character and brand.
The Paddington licensing campaign was boosted in 2014 by a movie version starring Nicole Kidman, Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville, Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters and Ben Wishaw, who voiced an amazing CGI Paddington. The film was a great success, making more than $270 million at the worldwide box office — and more than $6 million in Italy alone. In 2015 Paddington was ranked fourth in the 100 most influential brands of the year.
With a second film planned for release in Christmas 2017, featuring Hugh Grant and Brendan Gleeson in another strong cast, brand awareness is expected to be further boosted. MD Licensing is planning a wide-ranging licensing campaign in Italy focused on toys, gifts, games, confectionery, plush and much more.
Maurizio Distefano, President MD the evolution of Licensing, commented: "Paddington is a much-loved children’s brand whose many fans worldwide, love his friendly manner and adventures. The ZhuZhus Returns with New Episodes Next Year

Next month, The ZhuZhus returns with new episodes that feature Frankie, Pipsqueak, Num Nums, Chunk, and Mr. Squiggles. A new episode will premiere on the Disney Channel every Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. January 7 to 29.
The ZhuZhus is produced by Nelvana and inspired by the Zhu Zhu Pets toy craze of 2009.

The Fuller Brush Brand Sweeps Up Deals

Iconic American heritage brand, The Fuller Brush Company is broadening their “Live Fuller” licensing campaign with books, cleaning tools and bath products. 
Publications International signed a multi book deal on Fuller Cleaning Tips to hit the market in Spring 2017, and Tacony has extended their successful license of quality vacuum products.  The SAS Group launches hard floor sweepers in 2017 through direct response channels, and Popular Bath Products has signed on for bath and kitchen items.

GENERAL SUMMARY: Creates strategic direction for active licensee base and negotiates new partnerships within assigned categories to achieve growth objectives.   Directs tactical execution of licensed product lines from concept/line plan through commercialization.  


  • Manage existing licensees in assigned categories: 
    • Evaluate licensee’s quarterly marketing, retail and financial forecasts to ensure licensees on are track to meet established contractual obligations, royalty payments and forecast goals.
    • Organize and run licensee orientations, business reviews, semiannual/quarterly line reviews, and brain storm sessions.
    • Address specific licensee performance issues
    • Negotiate renewals on a timely basis
    • Provides input for annual departmental budget and plan
  • Ensure licensees develop seasonal lines in time for internal seasonal review and develop documents and presentations to communicate licensee’s initiatives to internal Crayola departments
    • Set trend direction and make recommendations for new product entry
    • Direct category research and product concept testing as needed with the consumer insights team
    • Work with creative and product development on design and creative direction for licensed product and packaging
    • Responsible for managing licensee press releases, cross marketing and promotions
    • Ensure adherence to internal approval process (i.e. safety, quality, financial, legal, content, creative, consumer activation, consumer affairs etc.) and assist in resolving issues.
  • Negotiate new licensed strategic partnerships for assigned segments in conjunction with established category strategies
    • Research, secure and develop new licensees building upon the success of existing segments in order to achieve predictable, profitable and sustainable growth
    • Negotiate deal terms including: grant of rights, royalty rates, guarantees, projections and business plans
  • 7 years’ experience in licensing or consumer marketing work for a CPG company.
  • Bachelors’ degree preferred

I have 8 years experience of working for a large London Publishing house licensing book content to third parties. I am looking for a role which utilises my skills in negotiation and relationship building and can develop my experience within the licensing field. Having licensed book content to a wide variety of customers from national Newspapers to international Publishers I would relish the experience to work in a new industry, licensing new content to new clients.
I realise that a move across from traditional publishing may mean a step down from the managerial role I was in before. I'm enthusiastic to work in a new industry and feel my skills are easily transferable and am happy to look outside licensing roles also.
