Yoko Ono Releases Limited-Edition Prints

John LennonPrints of three of John Lennon’s rare archival sketches from the Bag One Arts program—I’m One of Your Biggest Fans, The City in My Heart, and Happy Xmas— will be released through exclusive exhibitions in key cities nationwide beginning this month, including Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
 
John Lennon’s artwork celebrates human love and communication, two themes at the heart of his contribution to the art of the twentieth century. His Self-Portrait image has become the cornerstone of the collection. These limited-edition prints are adapted from Lennon’s original drawings and are offered through the Bag One Arts program. Each print is reproduced utilizing the standards typical for archival fine art printing processes, guided, approved, and hand-signed by Yoko Ono.

The City In My Heart (Eiffel Tower) depicts a memory of John and Yoko’s honeymoon in Paris. I’m One of Your Biggest Fans reflects his penchant for witty commentary when greeted by fans. The Happy Xmas tree celebrates peace and the message of Happy Xmas (War Is Over).

The Bag One Arts exhibition will open in Los Angeles on December 12 and in Las Vegas on December 5 at AFA Gallery at The Fashion Show Mall.

ShopHQ to Air Deadliest Catch Spin-Off Food Show

Deadliest CatchA new food-based show featuring seafood and other items inspired by the show Deadliest Catch will air live on ShopHQ as Fremantle Media expands its licensing activity. The show is the first of several new proprietary brands presented by Evine Live, as the firm rebrands ShopHQ as Evine Live. The complete rebranding is planned to take place in the first half of next year.
 
ShopHQ will feature seafood and other kitchen and cookware items as part of the network’s Deadliest Catch collection. In addition, Sig Hansen, captain of the Northwestern and main star of the show, will appear live on ShopHQ to share stories. Fans will also have the opportunity to interact with Hansen during a social chat hosted on ShopHQ’s Facebook page.
 
The Deadliest Catch collection premieres on Shop HQ in three special presentations on December 5.

GBI, LeapFrog to Launch New Titles for LeapPad Tablets

Genius Brands International (GBI) and LeapFrog Enterprises Inc. will launch the first Baby Genius and Warren Buffet’s Secret Millionaires Club content to be available on the LeapPad line of kids’ learning tablets, including the LeapPad3 and Ultra XDI.
 
Two apps are available for each show for digital download on the LeapFrog App Center for LeapFrog LeapPad learning tablets. Kids can discover how the Secret Millionaires Club began in the Secret Millionaires Club: New Beginnings app; and in Secret Millionaires Club: Rhythm and Responsibility, kids can go on a globetrotting adventure to learn basic business principles. For Baby Genius, kids can relax into a soothing world set to timeless music in Baby Genius Mozart & Friends app, or they can enter the habitats of the world’s endangered animals in Baby Genius A Trip to the San Diego Zoo app.

New Carol Van Zandt Debit Cards to Hit U.S. Market

Card.comCard.com has partnered with Carol Van Zandt LLC to bring a line of 18 prepaid MasterCard cards designed by Carol Van Zandt to the U.S. market. The Carol Van Zandt cards can be used everywhere debit MasterCard is accepted and includes access to more than 24,000 in-network ATMs, direct deposit, and mobile check deposits. Consumers can sign up for a Carol Van Zandt design card online.

MasterPieces, Smart Play Sign on for Animal Planet

Animal PlanetDiscovery Consumer Products entered two new deals to create lines of branded toys, puzzles, and craft sets based on the Animal Planet themes of dinosaurs, ocean, and land. Smart Play LLC and MasterPieces Puzzle Co. will create products to encourage exploration of the animal kingdom and fuel imagination.
 
Smart Play will develop children’s educational toys designed for children ages 2 to 8, including 3-D flashcards and puzzles, puzzle cubes, alphabet floor puzzles, a lighted click-and-see toy projector, and an electronic learning pad.
 
MasterPieces Puzzle Co. will develop a line of puzzles and craft sets depicting Animal Planet and Shark Week themes. MasterPieces will also create Animal Planet branded dinosaur and safari, and Shark Week branded 3-D puzzles with a paint component and buildable craft kits made of wood.
 
The new items from MasterPieces and Smart Play will be available next year.

Waddley Sees The World Signs Lawless as Licensing Representative

waddleyLawless Entertainment has been appointed as the worldwide licensing representative for the Waddley Sees The World book series.
 
E-commerce and licensing opportunities will begin with Waddley plush toys, sticker books, backpacks, and the Waddley membership club.
 
Lawless Entertainment will seek co-production financing and distribution partners for Waddley Sees the World, along with the future titles in the series, as well as all licensing and merchandising worldwide for the brand.
 
Waddley Sees The World, Upside Down Under: The Adventure Begins, the first book in the series, was released in online outlets last November and the second book, Waddley Sees The World: Off the Wall in China, is set for release on March 1.
 
Created by Julie Davis Canter and published by Red Sky Presents, the Waddley Sees The World series takes Waddley and his friends to exotic destinations where they explore unique ecosystems and visit world landmarks.

Disney Expands Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Merchandise Ahead of the Holiday Season

GOTGFollowing the box office success of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Disney Consumer Products will launch new toys for the holiday season. The product release will coincide with the DVD and Blu-Ray launch of the film on December 9.
 
The new toy and collectible lineup will include KIDdesigns’ Dancing Groot toy. Other key products include Funko’s POP! Marvel: Dancing Groot Bobble-head, Funko’s Fabrikations Guardians of the Galaxy–Rocket Raccoon collectible, Hot Wheels’ Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon Character Cars, Just Play’s Rocket Raccoon Plush, and Dragon Models’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Star-Lord Model Kit.

FAM Brands/Bally Total Fitness Signs Deal with Sakar for Wearable Fitness Tech

Last month, Sakar International Inc. had signed on to the FAM Brands/Bally Total Fitness roster of licensees, and has plans to debut a line of Bally Total Fitness wearable technology, fitness monitoring, and electronic accessory products at the Consumer Electronics Show in early January. The line will include a Bangle Dot Matrix Bluetooth Activity Tracker, heart rate monitors, Bluetooth activity trackers, and an activity tracking watch. The products will launch in stores during the second quarter of next year.

Grumpy Cat Earning $100 Million?

Grumpy Cat EarningsInternet meme Grumpy Cat was reported this week to have raked in $100 million dollars from merchandise.
 
While her owner Tabatha Bundesen stated that this was incorrect (and in fact would mean the cat brings in as much revenue as Oprah,) there is no denying that the cat, whose face was first posted on Reddit and became a viral sensation, has star power. Numerous appearances on television including Today, Good Morning America, and American Idol, merchandise ranges from coffee to Friskies cat food, and also became the star of her own film, Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever.
 
Bundesen denied that the cat had earned near that figure, but is set to do an interview soon to discuss the feline’s earning power.

COMMENTARY

Zipz Is a Great Way to Expand Wine Brands

Zipz WineZipz, a portable single-serve wine glass with a screw-on top (which doubles as a coaster!) that comes filled with one of four types of wine from Fetzer Wines, recently secured the largest deal in Shark Tank history. Investor Kevin O'Leary invested a record $2.5 million into the brand, which has already seen success at events such as The Toy Insider's Blogger Bash event in NYC. Licensing and partnership opportunities are now available, as announced by Alita's Brand Bar.
 
Zipz is one of those "why didn't I think of that?" products that is bound to be a huge success. The recyclable, durable plastic glasses are the perfect bring-along for picnics, tailgates, barbeques, sporting events, and more. The lid makes it ideal for on-the-go activities, and its disposable nature makes clean-up a breeze.
 
I think it is a great licensing opportunity for wine manufacturers as well, because the novelty of Zipz alone is enough to draw consumers to try a new type of wine that they might otherwise pass by if it were simply bottled and shelved along with hundreds of other brands. When I purchase wine, I typically have a few go-to bottled brands that I head for, without browsing around for new ones to try. I know what I like, so I tend to stick to it. However, if I went to a store to stock up for a party and saw Zipz, I'd be much more likely to switch it up and try a new type of wine, simply because of the packaging. Winemakers, especially smaller companies looking to expand, can potentially reach a much wider audience by partnering with an innovative and fresh approach to wine.

TJLG Appoints Team! Licensing for The World of Eric Carle in Germany

The World of Eric CarleThe Joester Loria Group (TJLG) has appointed Team! Licensing to build on the German success of the brand with a focus on The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The Munich-based licensing agent will further develop the brand based on Carle’s best-selling children’s picture books. Already, a number of key product categories have been licensed from Schmidt Spiele, Geda Labels, Klaus Herding GmbH and Gerstenberg. Team! Licensing is actively seeking partners in the baby segment to create new ranges of product for fans of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, featuring Carle’s signature vibrant colors and iconic characters and draw on the unique style and appeal of the brand.
 
Expanding the brand further in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Prime UG has signed on to be the exclusive toy distributor of the World of Eric Carle toy line from U.S. licensee, Kids Preferred. Additionally, StoryToys, global app partner, has recently debuted My Very Hungry Caterpillar, the first fully interactive 3-D form app based on the character. My Very Hungry Caterpillar is a virtual character app, which lets children nurture, care for, and play with their very own Very Hungry Caterpillar.
 
Team! Licensing is now set to expand the already successful licensing portfolio into currently untouched categories, such as food, baby accessories, and retail partnerships.

Cartoon Network, Dr. Martens to Launch Limited-Edition Adventure Time Boots

Adventure TimeCartoon Network has collaborated with British footwear brand Dr. Martens on a limited-edition line of boots for adults and children inspired by the animated comedy series Adventure Time. The special collection features the characters Finn and Jake. The line will be available in Dr. Martens stores worldwide and online beginning in March.
 
Three inspired boot designs will be available in the first collection with a limited-edition run of two of the designs, each with only 1,460 pairs created. Never before seen Adventure Time content will also be premiered in a special 30-second film to celebrate the launch of the collection.

Gosh! Designs Partners with Coolabi, Smallfilms for Bagpuss Products

BagpussCoolabi Group and Smallfilms have entered a licensing partnership with Gosh! Designs for a line of Bagpuss plush and giftware items. The partnership is supported by new marketing initiatives including increased digital and social media presence, promotional events, and a new style guide.
 
The line, which will include novelty plush hats, backpacks, key chains, doorstops, travel mugs, and coasters, will be unveiled at next year’s Spring Fair, with products available in stores next spring. The new Bagpuss style guide, which features classic Bagpuss artwork by Peter Firmin, will be available in January.
 
Additionally, an official Bagpuss app created by Daredevil Development for iOS and Android will feature 16 games, classic animation, and sounds from the original series, and will blend education, action, and creativity.

Mind Candy’s World of Warriors Selected by Apple as One of Top 2014 Apps

Paddington Tops UK Box Office for Second Week in a Row

paddingtonThe Paddington movie has remained at the top of the UK box office for the second week in a row.
 
The film generated around $5.84m (£3.75m) at the UK box office this weekend, with a total take of $15.9m (£10.21m) since its release on 28 November.
 
Based on Paddington Bear created by Michael Bond, the film has already spawned rafts of licensed merchandise, and stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Bonneville.

Paragon Secures Matt Hatter Publishing Rights

matt hatterGlobal publisher Parragon Books Ltd has partnered with Platinum Films on its boys’ brand Matt Hatter Chronicles, to create a series of Matt Hatter books including colouring, sticker and activity books, with 3D technology included, plus picture storybooks for publication in UK, Australia and South Africa in 2015.
 
This recent signing adds to a line-up of global licensees and complements Penguin Books’ novelisation publishing programme in English speaking territories worldwide which launched last August with the first two titles in a series of graphic novels following the adventures of the schoolboy hero.
 
Chief Operating Officer at Parragon Books Ltd, Paul Gregory commented on the new alliance, “Nigel Stone and I had an initial meeting at the Licensing Show in Vegas last year and it was clear to me that ‘Matt Hatter’ was a special character and one that will stand out in a crowded license market. Ben and Holly Making Headway in Australia

ben and hollyEntertainment One Licensing’s (eOne) Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom, the Emmy and BAFTA award-winning preschool series created and produced by Astley Baker Davies, is building momentum in Australia, the company has announced.
 
The programme made its on-air debut in 2009 and now broadcasts twice-daily on ABC4Kids.  Ben and Holly consistently tops the channel’s broadcast ratings chart and also leads downloads on the catch up service - ABC’s iView. 
 
Penguin has published a full line of books and a retail exclusive with ABC Stores has launched with toys (Big Balloon), apparel & footwear (Caprice), bedding (Network) and bags (Courier Luggage). Master toy partner, Big Balloon, will be rolling out Ben and Holly toys to the wider Australian market from February 2015.

Moose Toys Lines Up New Shopkins Licensees for Toys and Games

moose toysMoose Toys has announced a new group of licensees joining Shopkins’ licensed merchandise program for the U.S. and Canadian market, brokered by The Licensing Shop Inc. Shopkins made its debut in June.
 
Products licensed include global French language publishing from Group Modus; board games and puzzles in the U.S. and Canada from Pressman Toys; novelty candies packed in tins and boxes for the U.S. and Canada from Boston America; plush toys for the U.S. and Canada from Imports Dragon; novelty toys and trading card games for the U.S. and Canada from Bulls I Toys; back-to-school stationery, art activities, craft products, and USB flash drives for the U.S. and Canada from Creative Kids; and tabletop, storage, camp chairs, and fashion accessories for Canada from Danawares.

UP Studios Partners with Chinese Mall Link City for Holiday Takeover

UP Studios is partnering with Suzhou’s shopping mall Link City for an unprecedented holiday promotion – BOOMi @ Link City.  Launching just before New Year's Eve 2014-2015 and continuing through the Chinese New Year, UP Studios’ takeover of the shopping center will be headlined by its flagship animated characters, BOOMi and Bibop. 
 
UP Studios creates original Chinese home-grown family entertainment franchises and characters for global audiences across a broad cross-section of media platforms.  Suzhou, located near Shanghai, is an affluent urban area with a population of over 13 million.
 
This promotion furthers a recent trend in China, in which malls have made significant investments to license foreign children’s brands, such as Peanuts and Hello Kitty.  This collaboration marks the first time a China-based creative studio is producing such a promotion on this scale. The promotion will include over 100 giant statues, interactive displays and decorative items featuring BOOMi and Bibop across the mall to greet shoppers during the year’s busiest buying season. The venue will also launch a special pop-up store with BOOMi and Bibop merchandise to give customers an opportunity to watch BOOMi's cartoons and take home BOOMi and Bibop branded plush toys.

Thai Smile to Launch Cartoon Network Aircraft

thai smile cartoon networkThai Smile Airways has joined forces with Amazon Falls, the owner and operator of Cartoon Network Amazone waterpark, in a partnership that will see Cartoon Network characters take to the skies for the first time above Asia. The first of several branded aircraft is expected to take off in April 2015, just in time for Songkran, Thailand’s new-year holidays and water festival.
 
Onboard, passengers can expect to join characters including Finn the human, Jake the dog, Princess Bubblegum and Marceline from Adventure Time, one of Cartoon Network’s most popular original series airing on Asia Pacific’s leading kids channel.
