CBS Consumer Products Announces Penny Dreadful Collectibles

BIG Chief Studios Ltd. is entering a licensing deal with CBS Consumer Products to produce a range of high-end collectibles and gifts, based on Showtime series Penny Dreadful.
Initial product offerings will include highly detailed 1:6-scale collector figures of the main characters from the show, including Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), and Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton). The figures will feature hand-painted character portraits, finely tailored costuming, signature accessories, and display bases. The range will expand with Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), the Creature (Rory Kinnear), and Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), among others.
Big Chief will begin to offer the initial figure releases directly to consumers via, and through select hobby and specialist retailers.

BLE Responds to BLE 2016’s Clash with Yom Kippur

UBM Advanstar, organizer of Brand Licensing Europe, has announced it is looking at options of flexible opening hours for next year’s show, as a consequence of it falling directly at the same time as Yom Kippur. The given dates for BLE 2016 are 11 to 13 October next year at London’s Olympia. Yom Kippur begins on the evening of the 11 October.
Despite exploring options of moving the show dates, the organization has said that this will prove impossible due to Earls Court’s closure and Olympia being fully booked over a year in advance.

Commenting on the situation, BLE Event Director Darren Brechin said, “It is certainly not an ideal situation, and we have had extensive and very thoughtful discussions about how best to work around this challenge as we recognize that this dateline is going to adversely impact some of our Jewish friends and colleagues within the licensing industry. In consultation with those clients, we are now looking a number of opening hour options to try and ease attendance issues.”

Charles M. Riotto, president of LIMA, put out the following statement regarding the potential clash of dates: “An unfortunate situation exists regarding the timing of BLE 2016, which falls directly on the date of Yom Kippur. We recognize that this matter is greatly upsetting to a large portion of our membership and the licensing industry, as well as to LIMA and our staff.
“I feel it is important to note that we expressed our concern to UBM as soon as we became aware of this situation. Unfortunately, as show sponsor, LIMA is not involved in the date selection process or any of the other administrative aspects of BLE. We know that UBM has looked at all possible alternatives in terms of dates and venues, but with the closure of Earl’s Court, the availability of exhibit space at Olympia and London in general has been greatly reduced. The options considered such as holding the show over the weekend or moving the show outside of central London we not deemed feasible. In the meantime, I encourage everyone to respond to UBM’s request for feedback on how to best deal with this situation.”

Restructure at Mind Candy Confirmed

Mind Candy has confirmed that it will undergo a restructure. With the announcement of the closure of its Brighton office, the company will now be based at its London headquarters, with the licensing side of the business likely to be affected by the changes.
Founder Michael Acton-Smith said in a recently released statement that teams might be reduced in size.
He told, “I don’t think it’s any secret that Mind Candy has been having a difficult few years. We had such extraordinary success with Moshi Monsters, but with the switch from web business to mobile, the commercial engine, which drove the business was just no longer there. The amazing revenues which we had have just declined dramatically and we, and a lot of other kids’ web properties, haven’t been able to build successful businesses on mobile for a whole host of reasons, which I think the industry is pretty aware of. I really feel for the people we have to let go, it’s obviously a horrible, horrible thing to do, but we’re trying to manage it in a respectful and professional way.”
Mind Candy also recently had some issues with the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) in the UK. Moshi Monsters has now been removed from an advertising blacklist after admitting to a communication breakdown with the UK regulator over a failure to comply with an order to stop pushing kids to get paid subscriptions to the hugely popular children’s website. The ASA had taken the step of launching a name-and-shame campaign against Moshi Monsters after the company failed to abide by a ruling that its marketing practices broke the UK code on social responsibility, as well as direct exhortation and undermining parental authority.

The Entertainer says Farewell to Terry Smith after 49 Years in the Toy Industry

High street retailer, The Entertainer, this week sees Terry from the Beaconsfield Store retire after nine years of working for The Entertainer and an impressive 49 years in the toy retail industry.
Terry began his career at the age of 15 as a ‘Saturday boy’ at Cliftons (at that time part of Youngsters) in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire. On being offered a full time job, he left school with no qualifications to look after the music department and went on to be the Manager of the store in 1969.  In 1973 Cliftons changed hands and when the new Maidenhead branch opened in 1986, Terry managed both stores for 10 years.  When the Maidenhead store closed in 1996, Terry reverted back to being the Manager at Bourne End for another 10 years.
Terry then went on to join The Entertainer in Beaconsfield as a Sales Assistant and then Senior Supervisor, supporting the store Manager Sue Thorne who said of Terry “The store and the customers will miss him!”
On his retirement Terry said: “I am delighted I stayed in the toy industry which I love, but I’ve decided now is the time to see friends and family and do all the jobs I haven’t managed to do while at work.  I will really miss the run up to Christmas after so many years selling toys to families.”
