Authentic Brands Group Acquires Elvis Presley IP

Authentic Brands Group LLC (ABG) has acquired the Elvis Presley Intellectual Property Assets from Core Media Group. ABG will own and manage—in partnership with the Presley family and Joel Weinshanker, chairman and founder of National Entertainment Collectibles Association (NECA)—the intellectual property associated with Elvis Presley.

In connection with the acquisition, ABG will assume the global rights to a vast library of photographic imagery, including artwork, album covers, and movie posters; video and audio assets, including TV appearances and music specials; Elvis’ name and likeness; and other assets, including the rights to major Elvis-themed events such as Elvis Week, an international celebration of Elvis’ life and legacy.


“While I will continue to own Graceland and the original artifacts, we are looking forward to working with our new partners to continue the growth and expansion we have been working towards,” said Lisa Marie Presley. “The licensing and merchandising aspect of this business is not to be confused with the fact that the property will always remain with me and my family. However, this is a great partnership for our family and Elvis fans worldwide.”

Joel Weinshanker will acquire the rights to the management of Graceland operations, Elvis’ home in Memphis, Tenn., with ABG and the Presley family as partners. Graceland recently captured the No. 1 spot on USA Today and 10Best’s “Best Iconic American Attractions.”

A Squared Entertainment, Genius Brands International Merge for Kids’ Content Co.

Genius Brands International Inc. and A Squared Entertainment LLC have merged to form an intellectual property and multimedia content creation and distribution company focused on branded content-with-a-purpose for kids. The assets and experience of both companies will be consolidated under the Genius Brands International banner.

Andy Heyward, former CEO of DIC Entertainment and co-president of A Squared Entertainment, will assume the role of chairman and CEO of Genius Brands International. Amy Moynihan Heyward, former co-president of A Squared Entertainment, will serve as president. Klaus Moeller, currently CEO of Genius, will become vice president of special markets, and will continue with the company as a member of its board of directors.


In addition to producing original content with subject matter experts, the company will develop interactive digital entertainment in all formats, including broadcast, online, mobile, tablets, and more. A comprehensive consumer products program will be created to extend learning into other areas outside of digital media.


Marika Signs Licensing Agreements for Hosiery, Footwear

Marika, the largest division of FAM Brands, has signed a multi-year licensing agreement with Wiesner Products Inc. for women’s hosiery, and a deal with SG Companies for women’s footwear products under the Marika label. The new licensees will add to the brand’s portfolio of licensees and complement the existing Marika active apparel. The territory includes the U.S. and Canada, with initial deliveries to key retailers for hosiery beginning this holiday season and for footwear products next fall.
 
The new collections for each will follow Marika brand equities of function, performance, and exciting design aesthetics, including signature Marika details and themes. The upcoming spring collection will include training socks, anti-blister socks, everyday cotton/poly blend crews, and a studio yoga sock, all of which will be distinguished by distinctive Marika patterns with pops of color complementing the Marika apparel assortment.
 
The major focus for the footwear collection is body wellness, with three major product categories: performance training, fitness studio, and sport-active lifestyle. Key features and product benefits include aero-tech engineered breathable uppers, light and flexible compression and 3-D molded midsoles, and Marika Dry Wik linings.

American Mensa Appoints Perpetual to Grow Licensing Program

American Mensa, the brand that defines high IQ, has selected Perpetual Licensing as its exclusive agent to develop a strategic brand licensing program. Perpetual will partner with the American Mensa team to create compelling brand extensions that reinforce Mensa’s position in promoting intellectual development. American Mensa licensed product categories will include games, puzzles, brainteasers, mobile apps, publishing, and extensions to Mensa’s calendar lines.

Mensa, an international society comprising people whose IQ is in the top 2 percent of the population, focuses on promoting a wide range of intellectual, social, and cultural activities for its 100,000 members in more than 100 countries.


Just Dance 2014 and popchips Partner for Exclusive Katy Perry Dance

Ubisoft and popchips have signed a partnership that involves both cross-promotional support at retail locations in the U.S. and a redemption opportunity on specially marked bags of popchips. Snacking fans will be able to download an exclusive Katy Perry track on the recently launched Just Dance 2014. The promotion kicks off in mid-November and goes through March.

Approximately 2.5 million specially marked packages of popchips, including Katy Perry’s signature flavor, katy’s kettle corn, will provide the simple how-to steps detailing how to access the track by visiting justdancegame.com/popchips.

To further promote the partnership, Just Dance and popchips are working together at select retail locations across the U.S. to activate in-store displays of both popchips and Just Dance 2014. In addition, fans can purchase popchips at any of the participating grocery stores starting November 29 and redeem a coupon for $5.00 off Just Dance 2014 at any Best Buy location nationwide.


SMC Signs New U.S. Partners for Angry Little Girls!

SMC Entertainment Group Inc. has further expanded the licensing program for Angry Little Girls!, the gocomics.com comic strip and book series from Harry N. Abrams and Running Press Publishers in North America. SMC has signed with Toynami for Talking Kim plush dolls and clip-ons, Multiverse-Studios for basic plush, Shirt Lab and Changes for T-shirts, Whatever Company for metal safety-backed buttons, Olin Arm Candy for woven/braided purses and reusable lunch bags, and Advanced Graphics for standees and wall jammers. 
 
Regional specialty retailer BAIT will celebrate an Angry Little Girls! 20th anniversary in Diamond Bar, Calif. and on Melrose in Los Angeles at two different locations next May.  Lela Lee, the creator and brand owner of Angry Little Girls!, will be on-hand for the festivities.


Derek Jeter Partners with Simon & Schuster to Launch Publishing Imprint

Simon & Schuster has entered into a multi-faceted, co-publishing partnership with sports icon Derek Jeter. Under the name Jeter Publishing, the program will encompass adult non-fiction titles, children’s picture books, middle grade fiction, and ready-to-read children’s books. Adult titles will be published in conjunction with the Gallery Books imprint and children’s titles will be published in conjunction with the Little Simon, Paula Wiseman Books, and Simon Spotlight imprints.


King Features Appoints Tycoon Group as Agent for South America

King Features, worldwide licensor of Betty Boop and Popeye among many other properties, has appointed Tycoon Group as its agent for Mexico, Central America and Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela, effective immediately. Tycoon will work closely with King Features to develop innovative programs for the company’s Betty Boop, Baby Boop, Popeye, Olive Oyl, and Baby Popeye & Friends brands, as well as Archie Comics and heritage comic properties such as Blondie, Beetle Bailey, and Hagar.


Icing Introduces Exclusive Monopoly-Inspired Collection

Icing has teamed up with Hasbro to design a capsule collection of jewelry and accessories inspired by Hasbro’s Monopoly game. This exclusive collection is designed in metallic gold and bedazzled jewels, featuring chain link, beading, and glitter details on pieces including a charm bracelet, stud earrings, iPhone cases, wallets, makeup compacts, T-shirts, and rings.


Little Pim, VTech Partner for Foreign Language Apps

Little Pim has partnered with VTech on the Little Pim foreign language video series for preschoolers. The series will be available for the InnoTab Learning Tablet range starting December 1 in VTech’s Learning Lodge app store, which is home to educator-approved downloadable content and curriculum. The Little Pim videos will help kids learn 360 words and phrases in a second language. The videos will be offered in English, Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, Italian, and German.


K’nex, Respawn Entertainment Confirm New Licensing Relationship

Titanfall, a video game from Respawn Entertainment, has expanded into the construction category with new licensed building toys from K’nex. K’nex will provide a sneak peek of the new Titanfall building sets at the American International Toy Fair in February. Sets will include characters from Titanfall, such as pilots, multiple titans, spectres, and other key elements from the game. The building sets are designed for kids ages 8 and up.


Discovery Communications Enters Partnership with Greenberry Eco-Industries

Discovery Communications has partnered with Greenberry Eco-Industries for environmentally friendly pet waste products under the Animal Planet brand. Greenberry Eco-Industries will develop a line of pet waste bags and dispensers, waste scoopers, wipes, training pads, cat litter, litter liner bags, litter mats, litter boxes, and pet stain and odor cleaning products. All products will be sustainable or created from recycled materials and ingredients and will include biodegradable materials wherever possible. The line is set to debut next spring at a variety of retailers and e-commerce sites.


A portion of the proceeds from sales of the Animal Planet products will benefit the principal partners of R.O.A.R (Reach Out. Act. Respond), Animal Planet’s national campaign that leads the way in taking action and being a voice for animals. The new product line will expand Animal Planet’s pet programs in the U.S. and Canada.


Saban Announces Mobile App for KidZui

Saban Brands has announced that Zui has launched a new mobile app for its kid-safe Internet browser, KidZui.
 
Operated by Zui, KidZui is a downloadable browser that provides access to a kid-safe Internet experience of more than six million websites, online videos, pictures, and games. Designed to make the Internet both fun and safe for kids, the KidZui mobile app provides the entertainment and security that parents and kids have come to love from KidZui on the go. The free-to-download KidZui app is now available for iOS download on the App Store and will soon be available for Android as well.
 
In addition to the new app, KidZui has launched a new software upgrade and refresh to the desktop version.

BBC Worldwide Appoints Golden Bear as First CBeebies Master Toy Licensee

BBC Worldwide UK has signed with Golden Bear Toys to be its master toy partner on the first range of CBeebies toys set to launch next fall.
 
Clare Piggott, head of merchandising said, “CBeebies is a renowned brand in the UK and in other territories around the world, and is much loved by pre-schoolers and parents alike. We’re very excited to be working with Golden Bear on this collection of fun, entertaining, and educational toys.”

Monty Python to Reunite on Stage

All of the surviving members of comedy group Monty Python are to reform for a stage show.
 
“We’re getting together and putting on a show—it’s real,” one of the Pythons, Terry Jones, commented. “I’m quite excited about it. I hope it makes us a lot of money. I hope to be able to pay off my mortgage!”
 
A press conference will be held on Thursday to make the announcement official, with John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin, and Jones all due to appear. The sixth member of the comedy troupe, Graham Chapman, died in 1989.


Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck Sells More than 1 Million Copies

Puffin’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck, the eighth book in Jeff Kinney’s series, had first-week worldwide sales of more than 1.3 million copies in all formats.
 
In the UK, the book (which represented Penguin UK’s largest first printing of a children’s book with 800,000 copies) is currently the No. 1 bestselling title in the UK across all adult and children’s books.
 
“Sales for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck in the first week have been phenomenal, and we are very proud that in the UK it is currently the No. 1 bestselling title across all books, even knocking Alex Ferguson off his top spot!”


Redan Signs Golden Bear for Sooty

Redan Alchemy has entered into a deal with Golden Bear as master toy partner for the Sooty Show. A new toy line for the UK and Eire covering plush and plastics will be launching next fall.

Minecraft Annual Hits Top Spot

Egmont UK launched the Minecraft Beginner’s Handbook and the Minecraft annual last month and is seeing success with the brand in the UK and internationally. Following support from retail across all accounts, Egmont has printed an excess of 1 million copies of the Minecraft annual, the Beginner’s Handbook and the Redstone Handbook.
 
Sarah Bates, publishing and marketing director of Egmont Publishing Group, comments: “We’re thrilled to have the No. 1 spot with our new Minecraft annual. The Beginner’s Handbook is currently the fourth bestselling title in the UK children’s book market. Toyzeria Enhancing Visitor Quality

Spielwarenmesse Middle East Fuarcılık, a subsidiary of Spielwarenmesse eG, has announced that its new business-to-business (B2B) concept, Toyzeria 2013, a fair concept reserved for the trade, was welcomed by 95 percent of the exhibitors. The exhibitors stated that they were satisfied with the fair. The organizers said that developing a purely B2B platform impacted positively on visitor quality.
 
Toyzeria 2013 was attended by more than 8,000 retailers and buyers, including 253 international trade visitors.
 
The next Toyzeria takes place from October 30 to 2 November 2 next year. Spielwarenmesse eG will then include the trade fair in its international fair program World of Toys for the first time, organizing a joint pavilion for manufacturers worldwide.


Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Signs Deal with Bioworld Europe

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) continues to accelerate its licensing drive with news of a multi-property apparel and accessories partnership with Bioworld Europe. The deal will see Bioworld Europe design and distribute clothing and accessories across SCEE’s portfolio of video game properties throughout EMEA and Australia.
 
Bioworld will kick-start the collaboration with adult apparel and accessories based on SCEE’s Killzone: Shadow Fall first person shooter franchise. Products in the range will include T-shirts, hoodies, dog tags, wallets, baseball caps, and wrist cuffs. The collection will launch at retail and online outlets this month to coincide with the release of SCEE’s new video game Killzone: Shadow Fall on PS4 on November 29.
 
Retail distribution for Bioworld’s Killzone: Shadow Fall collection will include a network of European specialist gaming retailers, such as GameStop and Game, that will target the brand’s core fan base in addition to key online retailers including EMP, Amazon, and Rakuten.


JCB Kids, Amscan Announce New JCB Partyware Range

JCB Kids and Amscan have signed a multi-year deal to produce a complete range of My First JCB branded partyware. The range will include cups, plates, napkins, party invitations, balloons, decorations, and party favors all featuring the My First JCB branding. The bright yellow and blue design, which leads with the Joey JCB character, is aimed at young infants and preschoolers.
 
Sam Johnson, senior licensing manager, JCB Kids says of the deal, “Diggers and earth moving machines have always been a popular birthday party theme for young children, and the entry of the UK’s favourite digger to this category will delight our many fans. Amscan has created a stand out JCB range, which is set to be scooped up by retailers and consumers alike.”


Matt Hatter Heads to Screens in Southern Europe

Matt Hatter Chronicles will premiere on RAI and OFLAZ Media Group’s kids channel in Turkey. Platinum Films has also announced the acquisition of the third season of the series by Canal Panda, Portugal, and Spain.
 
Next spring, seasons one and two of the CGI-animated adventure series will premiere in Italy on RAI’s dedicated digital kid’s channel RAI Gulp. In Turkey, the show will air on Kidz. Canal Panda Portugal and Spain will debut season three next fall in line with the consumer products launch across Iberia. The landmark free-to-air deal with Italy’s leading broadcaster RAI will strengthen the series’ foothold in the Mediterranean.


Paper Island Fights the Bullies

Anti-bullying week began on November 18 and runs through November 22. Paper Island has collaborated with the anti-bullying organization Beat Bullying and T-shirt Booth to create a selection of eye-catching T-shirts featuring the kids’ brand Dinosaurus to highlight the important subject of bullying. Tracey Richardson, research director at Digital Giving, says, “Dinosaurus is supporting an amazing charity Beat Bullying with this brilliant personalized T-Shirt from T-Shirt Booth.”

Eyeworks Extends Presence in Nordics

In addition to his current position as managing director of Eyeworks Denmark, Esben Halding has been appointed as head of Nordic cooperation of Eyeworks Group. This new role marks the growing importance of the Nordic territories within the Eyeworks Group.
 
Eyeworks Finland was recently added to the Eyeworks Nordic group, which now consists of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland. Halding’s role is to intensify the cooperation between the countries and ensure that ideas and formats are exchanged quickly and efficiently within the group, while supporting the growth of the Eyeworks companies in the Nordic countries.  
 
Halding says, “I see interesting growth potential in the Nordic region. All our companies have a different background in terms of what kind of programs we develop and produce, and a successful exchange of ideas, formats, and skills are essential if we shall fulfill our ambition to become a top player in the Nordic region as a whole. Withit Expands into India

Withit has appointed AI India as licensing agent in India. This is a new region for Withit’s business.

Studio 100 Signs Movie Deals for Maya the Bee, Blinky Bill

Studio 100 Film has completed multiple sales in several territories for the company’s new feature-length films Maya The Bee Movie and Blinky Bill Movie.
 
The newly launched film division, part of international children’s production and distribution company Studio 100 Media GmbH, made its debut at this year’s AFM 2013, offering a slate of family-oriented animated films kicking off with its flagship project Maya The Bee Movie, together with the features Vic The Viking Movie, Heidi Movie, and Blinky Bill Movie for international distribution.
   
Rights to Maya The Bee Movie have been sold to Planeta Junior for the territories of Spain, Portugal, Andorra, Italy, Greece, and Cyprus; Sejong Communications for South Korea; and all audiovisual rights to Cinetel for Hungary.  Studio 100 Film has already sold the rights to Universum Film for the German speaking territories, to Russian entertainment company Premium Film for the CIS territories, and to Monolith Films and Karantanija Cinemas for the distribution in Poland and Ex-Yugoslavia respectively.
 
In addition, Blinky Bill Movie has also been sold to Sejong Communications for South Korea and Caravella Distribution has taken the Russian audiovisual rights (theatrical, TV, HE, and VoD) for the CIS territories.


41 Entertainment Expands Footprint with Disney XD and Disney Channel

41 Entertainment has granted various TV rights in major European markets to Disney for the Pac-Man and The Ghostly Adventures property. The TV series includes two seasons.

Disney Channel and Disney XD have secured the free and pay TV rights for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland for both seasons. Disney XD has also secured the Pay TV rights for the UK and Eire, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland for the first season with an option for season two; and Pay TV rights for season two in the U.S.


Aardman Produces Magic Game for Wizards vs. Aliens

To support the launch of the new series of Wizards vs. Aliens on CBBC, BBC Wales Interactive and CBBC have commissioned Aardman to create a scrolling puzzle platform, which combines drama from the show with game play. The game is now available on the Wizards vs. Aliens site for fans across the UK.  
 
Aardman has created a series of challenging puzzle-based levels with a story consisting of the drama expected from an episode of the show.


Atlantyca Entertainment Partners with Spain Librodivo for Geronimo Stilton Games

Atlantyca Entertainment’s licensing partner BRB Internacional has secured a deal with Librodivo to produce a line of Geronimo Stilton classic board games for the Spanish region.

Librodivo will launch a variety of new games this month, including four cognitive games, Cruza Letras, word games, and three educational themed game packages, which will be displayed on dedicated promotional panels throughout bookstores, supermarkets, and toy stores.

BRB Internacional was named the exclusive licensing agent for Atlantyca Entertainment’s three Geronimo Stilton brands in January of last year, granting BRB licensing rights for the brands in Spain and Portugal.

Warner Bros. Grows in the Middle East
 

Warner Bros. Consumer Products EMEA, in partnership with its licensing representative for the Middle East, Shooting Stars, celebrated the growth of its licensing business in the Middle East at Dubai Brand Licensing Fair last week.
 
The licensor’s world-class portfolio of film and classic animated brands including DC Comics, Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, and Scooby-Doo are proving popular with consumers of all ages, demographics, and genders across the Middle East.
 
Growth is being recognized in all key categories, with back-to-school products being a success for the licensor with business up by 300 percent this year.
 
Roy Chacra, managing director, Shooting Stars, says, “Warner Bros. properties owned the Back-to-School period in the Middle East in 2013, and became the ‘must have’ choice for families making preparations for the start of the academic year. We owe our success to our incredible licensees and retailers without whom we wouldn’t have been able to achieve these tremendous results. Paul Frank Australian Dream Team Finalized

Following more than 10,000 entries, six young Australians have been selected to be a part of the Paul Frank Dream Team and will appear in advertising campaigns and catalogues nationwide.
 
Haven Licensing, in partnership with Saban Brands, ran the three-month competition in association with publishing house Pacific Magazines and department store BIG W. The winners range in age from 1 to 17.
 
Tom Punch, managing director of Haven Licensing, says he was delighted to announce the winners of the Paul Frank Dream Team: “We were blown away by the number of entries received. It was tough to whittle it down to six, but I believe our winners are the embodiment of Paul Frank’s philosophy of fun. Galeries Lafayette Retail Launches Uglydoll Brand in China

Global Pursuit Co. Ltd. has concluded a retail agreement with Galeries Lafayette China that will introduce Uglydoll brand apparel, accessories, and other products through its flagship store in Beijing.
 
In June, Global Pursuit was named to represent the Uglydoll brand by Pretty Ugly LLC, and is charged with developing and expanding the brand’s licensing efforts in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China. In addition to developing retail programs for the brand, Global Pursuit is also working with its extensive network of licensees and retailers throughout their territories to enhance the Uglydoll brand experience in categories such as apparel, accessories, stationery, publishing, toys, and more.

This position entails moderate domestic and international travel, including attendance at trade events such as the Licensing Show, MAGIC, Comic-Con, Toy Fair, etc.
