NBC Signs with Big Tent Entertainment for The Biggest Loser Lifestyle Program

This year’s Brand Licensing Europe 2013, which took place last week, featured a layout that separated exhibitors into characters and entertainment, a brand zone, and art and design.
According to Advanstar, organizer of the show, the visitor numbers were up, and the amount of visitors and exhibitors from around the world also increased.
NBCUniversal Television Consumer Products has named marketing and branding agency Big Tent Entertainment to develop The Biggest Loser franchise into a major lifestyle brand. Big Tent will develop licensing partnerships that promote healthy living in categories including food and nutrition, fitness products, and publishing. Additionally, Big Tent will seek out brands for promotional partnerships and event integrations. The Biggest Loser is a production of Shine America and 25/7 Productions.

National Geographic, PetSmart Partner for Exclusive Line

National Geographic and PetSmart have partnered for an extensive line of new products set to launch next spring. The products will focus on specialty pets such as fish, reptiles, birds, and small pets. The new products, including habitats, accessories, and food, will be sold exclusively at PetSmart stores in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. National Geographic’s net proceeds will support the conservation of animals and their habitats. 

National Geographic will contribute its expertise and provide educational content for pet parents, including information on pet diets, habitats, and natural behaviors. The products will be simple to use and will be complementary to the pets’ natural environments.
The National Geographic collection adds to PetSmart’s growing list of exclusive products that includes Martha Stewart Pets, Toys “R” Us Pets, Bret Michaels Pets Rock, and GNC Pets.

Parham Santana’s BrandSlam Division and USF Partner to Extend UNICEF Brand

The Brand Extension Agency has inked a deal for a licensing program between BrandSlam, Parham Santana’s licensing division, and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. Parham Santana will manage the development of products with a cause-related message, helping the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to raise funds and further their mission to reach a day when zero children die from preventable causes and every child has a safe and healthy childhood. Parham Santana will join existing licensees, including Hallmark, Pier 1, and Barnes and Noble and will partner with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to develop a strategy to find new product categories that fit the vision and goals of UNICEF.

Nesquik Brand Expands with New Partnerships

Global brand agency Beanstalk has extended the Nesquik brand into new categories. Smart Planet will launch a line of Nesquik-branded novelty appliances, including a chocolate fountain and a cupcake/brownie maker sold with recipe booklets. Evriholder Products will launch Sip’R Eyes, Puzz-L Mug, Mix ’N Slip, Bunny Sip’R, and Freez’R Pops featuring the Nesquik brand as well.

IDW Publishing Launches IDW Entertainment for TV Properties

IDW Publishing has launched a new division, IDW Entertainment, to fund and develop new TV properties based on IDW Publishing’s catalog. David Ozer has been named president of the new division. Ozer will work to identify, develop, and oversee brand extensions across IDW Publishing’s portfolio of comics and graphic novels for the global TV market.
A key focus for the division is the financing, development, and production of TV series with the goal of securing straight-to-series commitments from networks. The development of properties from the company’s catalog includes Life Undead, Brooklyn Animal Control, and V Wars. IDW Publishing also has several active theatrical projects in development with Warner Bros., Disney, and Sony. 

Minnesota Children’s Museum, HIT Entertainment, and Fisher-Price Announce New Thomas & Friends Traveling Exhibit 

Minnesota Children’s Museum, HIT Entertainment, and Fisher-Price have partnered to create a hands-on, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)-based exhibit featuring Thomas & Friends. The new exhibit will introduce young children to Thomas the Tank Engine and his engine friends from the Island of Sodor.
The exhibit will launch at Minnesota Children’s Museum in June and begin a 10-year tour of children’s museums nationwide starting next summer. This is the first time Thomas & Friends is being offered as a museum experience in the U.S.  
The Thomas & Friends exhibit will be designed, developed, and built by Minnesota Children’s Museum in partnership with HIT Entertainment. Fisher-Price is the presenting sponsor for the exhibit. 

First Friends Obtains the License for Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

The First Friends Friendly Pacifier has obtained the license to reinvent the characters from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The new Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Friendly Pacifier collection will feature a plush character from the holiday classic, including Rudolph, Clarice, the Abominable Snow Monster, Hermey the dentist, and others from the Island of Misfits Toys. Parents can detach the plush toy friend for playtime, bedtime, or just fun time. It is dishwasher safe and made from latex-free medical grade silicone.
The Friendly Pacifier Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer collection is expected in time for the holidays next year and is recommended for ages 0-6 months.

At the show, Warner Bros. and Looney Tunes teamed up with the NBA deal, Rainbow celebrated Winx Club’s 10th anniversary with a fashion show, the NPD Group announced Angry Birds Star Wars as the best new toy license in the big five European toy markets this year, the Rasatamouse Company brought all licensing and merchandising back in-house, Henri le Worm app launched its licensing program, a partnership was made between Shaun the Sheep and Rugby World Cup, and the Angry Birds Go! merchandise program was launched. 
In addition, the first licensed property from Twitter, @IQuoteForHer, exhibited for the first time, Saban’s Digimon Fushion is set to come to ITV, Extreme will launch sports drinks in the Middle East, Sega launched the Football Manager licensing program, and Sesame Workshop screened its latest offering, the Furchester. A Cbeebies land is to debut at Alton Towers next year, and Lisle launched Pip with David Jason.
The Power List from Licensing.Biz saw Peppa Pig named as the top property in Character & Entertainment, V&A scooped the award for Art & Design, and Lego took the prize for Top Brand.

Angry Birds Star Wars Tops New Toy Licenses in Europe

Based on data from the NPD Group, Angry Birds Star Wars is the best new toy license in the big five European toy markets so far this year. Sales of Angry Birds Star Wars during this period were £5.3m, ahead of second place Skylanders at £4m, and third place Monsters University at £2.9m. Angry Birds Star Wars is also the No. 1 license in the board games category.

According to NPD Group data, across the first seven months of this year, Angry Birds and Angry Birds Star Wars combined ranked as the 14th biggest license overall in the big five European markets and 12th biggest overall in the UK. Just one year ago, Angry Birds alone was ranked a much lower 39th place in the big five markets in Europe.

Saban Brands Expands into Europe

Saban Brands has expanded its operations into Europe with the appointment of Gustavo Antonioni as managing director of consumer products Europe and the opening of a new London office. For the Los Angeles-based company, this marks its first international expansion to support the growth of their UK and European business for core brands, including Power Rangers, Paul Frank, Julius Jr., and Digimon Fusion.
Antonioni, who joins Saban Brands with more than 18 years in the film studio business at companies such as Marvel and Warner Bros., will add additional staff to support the company’s brand activities and seek new business opportunities across the region.

Rovio Rolls Out Angry Birds Go!

Rovio Entertainment, the creator of Angry Birds, has revealed the new Angry Birds Go! franchise. In addition, it announced several new strategic partnerships to expand its product range and support its global licensing business.
Set to release on December 11, Rovio revealed the mobile game Angry Birds Go! at Brand Licensing Europe. Angry Birds Go! will invite players of all ages to join the birds as they race downhill in karts. These new game elements will bring about additional opportunities for innovative product lines across multiple consumer products categories. The Angry Birds Go! game will feature Hasbro’s Telepods, which players can use to “teleport” new karts into the game. New Angry Birds Go! licensees include Fashion UK and Leomil.

Angry Birds Magazine Hits Shelves

Egmont UK will publish an All About Angry Birds magazine this month in the UK, Germany, Poland, Turkey, and China.
Egmont also has book publishing rights for the brand and has already published three Angry Birds Joke Books, a search-and-find title, and a press-out-and-play book, with more to follow next year.

Big Tent Signs International Licensing Agents at BLE

Big Tent Entertainment has expanded internationally with new licensing agents worldwide. New agents include E-all Entertainment in Brazil, Lisans Medya in Turkey, Copyright Licensing in the Middle East, License Inc. in Mexico, and Early Bird in Scandinavia. The new agents will spearhead licensing efforts across the company’s full portfolio.

Bringing Back the Clangers

The British cult classic animated TV show, Clangers, is set to make a return to its home on the BBC after 45 years. Co-producers of the new preschool series CBeebies, Coolabi, Smallfilms and Sprout, with BBC Worldwide for its international channels, made the joint announcement. BBC Worldwide is also confirmed as the international distributor for the show. The £5 million production is already underway and is set for return to the small screen in 2015.
The Clangers previously launched on the BBC in 1969, featuring recurring themes such as the importance of community, caring for the planet, and encouraging and nurturing a sense of wonder and natural curiosity.
Factory Transmedia and puppet makers and producers Mackinnon and Saunders will produce the classic Smallfilms series in stop-motion animation. Peter Firmin and Daniel Postgate (son of Oliver Postgate, original creator) will be actively involved in the new series as executive producers. Firmin is also part of the design process and Postgate is writing storylines and scripts. The classic UK series is set to make its U.S. debut as a Sprout original.

Zodiak Kids and Hachette Jeunesse Sign Lolirock Publishing Deal

Zodiak Kids CP Paris and Hachette Jeunesse have entered into a wide-range publishing deal for the new girls’ property Lolirock, produced by Marathon Media (a Zodiak Kids company) for France Televisions and Disney Channel (France). 
The deal covers the French-speaking world and encompasses a range of products, such as novels, activity books, fancy stationery, novelty stationery, and e-books. The planned launch date is November of next year, following its launch on France Televisions, with distribution planned across all retail circuits.

Atlantyca Signs with Random House Mondadori for Bat Pat

Atlantyca Entertainment’s licensing arm has secured a licensing deal with Spanish language publishing group Random House Mondadori to produce the newly developed The Detective Diary agenda based on the children’s book series featuring Bat Pat.
Available now in bookstores, supermarkets, big stores, toy shops, and more throughout Spain, the new product features an agenda style with distinctive games, puzzles, quizzes, and activities for Bat Pat fans.
Atlantyca Entertainment is currently working on an animated Bat Pat TV series in partnership with Imira Entertainment, Malaysia’s Inspidea, along with broadcast and participation partners Rai Fiction (Italy), GD Animation Fund, and RTVE (Spain).

Saban’s Digimon Fusion Comes to ITV

Saban Brands and MarVista Entertainment have announced that the new series and sixth installment of the Digimon franchise, consisting of 30 half-hour episodes, has been licensed to ITV for broadcast next year. Additionally, ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVS GE) will represent Digimon Fusion for consumer products licensing and promotion in the UK.
ITVS GE launched Digimon Fusion to the UK trade at BLE, with product launches planned for next spring.

LIMA Helps HKTDC Highlight Asian Licensing Growth

LIMA’s annual Global Networking Party held at The Mayfair Hotel in London during Brand Licensing Europe (BLE) saw about 200 executives from the international licensing industry in attendance. The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the body dedicated to promoting Hong Kong trade and opportunities, sponsored the event for the first time.
LIMA and the HKTDC also co-hosted a seminar at BLE, in which Raymond Yip, assistant executive director of HKTDC, highlighted the vast potential for the growth of licensed products in the entire Asia-Pacific region, and showed how HKTDC can help Western companies to tap this market. China is the world’s fastest growing market for licensed goods, which grew more than 250 percent from $1.1 billion in 2005 to $3.9 billion in 2010, according to HKTDC.
LIMA UK’s recent survey of British licensing professionals, conducted in September, corroborate the HKTDC figures, with around 20 percent of respondents stating that China would be one of their top three export markets next year.

Performance Brands Signs McLaren

Performance Brands has been appointed licensing agent for racing car manufacturer McLaren. With an existing portfolio that includes the likes of Hugo Boss, Tag Heuer, Specialized bikes, and Links of London, Performance Brands intends to support the brand reach of McLaren through licensing partnerships that are highly compatible across categories such as mobile technology, eyewear, travel, and sports equipment.

New Licensing Deals Signed for Classic Peter Rabbit

Silvergate Media has made two significant additions to its Classic Peter Rabbit licensee roster. Gund will produce Peter Rabbit plush, plush key rings, and mohair plush for the UK, Eire/Channel Islands and mainland Europe. Products will be distributed through high-end retail outlets and is expected to launch next spring.
Emma Bridgewater has developed a range of ceramic tableware for the brand. The initial ceramic collection includes a bowl, plate, and child’s mug, available in a boxed set or individually, as well as a full-sized mug. This collection is already available online and in stores at the four Emma Bridgewater shops in the UK as well as more than 200 independent retailers. A melamine range and additional ceramic designs are due to follow next year. The range will be distributed in the UK, the U.S., Japan, Australia, and Europe.

Megalicense to Help Wargaming to License World of Tanks Brand

Megalicense and Wargaming have signed a long-term licensing agreement for the online action World of Tanks in Russia and CIS countries. Since last summer Megalicense has been an official agent of the brand and is in charge of the license acquisition enquires on production for a wide range of products with World of Tanks logos. The World of Tanks trademark is already licensed for a number of categories, including toys, board games, stationery, books and PC accessories.

Sega Releases Sonic Lost World Trailers

Sega has released two new trailers for Sonic Lost World in advance of the game’s U.S. release on October 29. The game is available exclusively for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS platforms as part of Sega’s exclusive partnership with Nintendo announced earlier this year.

Shaun the Sheep in Rugby World Cup Partnership

Aardman Animations has partnered with Elite Sports Properties UK Ltd (ESP), the master licensee for Rugby World Cup 2015 (RWC 2015), in a joint licensing program that will feature Shaun the Sheep. The licensing initiative will include a new rugby capsule style guide featuring Shaun and the flock in their very own Rugby World Cup 2015 kit.

Tree Fu Tom Expands Internationally

FremantleMedia Kids & Family Entertainment has extended the international expansion of action adventure series Tree Fu Tom with the appointment of four new licensing agents and three new toy distribution partners.
New agents include Partner Plus in Greece, El Ocho in Spain, IMC in Argentina, and INK Scandinavia and CEE. New toy distribution partners include Top Toy Nordics, TM Toys CEE, and Little Prince toy distribution in Israel, which will distribute Giochi Preziosi’s Tree Fu Tom toy range.
This news follows the recent announcement of a raft of significant TV sales for the series in Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, Greece, Portugal, and Spain. When added to previous TV distribution deals for the show, Tree Fu Tom is now taking his unique brand of magic across the majority of Europe.

TVMania in WWF Deal

TVMania UK has signed an agreement with global conservation charity WWF-UK. TVMania UK will produce an innovative and creative new range of apparel and nightwear for girls and boys, with a percentage of all sales going straight to the charity.
“We are delighted to be linking up with TVMania UK,” says Howard Wright of WWF-UK. “Their experience in the apparel market is vast and they have a fresh approach that has really impressed us, so we are very excited about the prospects for this new range!”


Mega Bloks, Activision Launch Call of Duty Collector Sets

Mega Brands Inc. and Activision Publishing Inc. have launched a new premium line of Mega Bloks collector construction sets based on the Call of Duty franchise at New York Comic Con. The Call of Duty Collector Construction Sets are part of a multi-year global license with Activision that expands upon the two companies’ success in developing construction collectibles.
Call of Duty Collector Construction Sets offer a unique range of construction collectibles, including buildable vehicles, themed locations, and collectable micro action figures from the franchise. The micro action figures feature an unprecedented level of articulation, including unique joint design for ultimate pose-ability. In addition, the new buildable accessories and equipment systems provide endless customization opportunities.

kaboom! Signs Target Deal for Treehouse Presents

kaboom! Entertainment, the kids and family label of Phase 4 Films, has signed an agreement securing dedicated retail space across all of Canada’s 125 branches of Target for its Treehouse Presents releases.
The 4-foot (48 facings) exclusive space will feature Treehouse branding and host releases coming through the Treehouse Presents DVD label, jointly created by Corus and Phase 4 Films. The space launches on November 5 and will run for a year with kaboom! providing custom Movie Night packaging for Target.
The first line of exclusive Movie Night packaging will feature Octonauts, My Big Big Friend, Franklin & Friends, Toopy & Binoo, Chuggington, and The Berenstain Bears. kaboom! will create downloadable activities, recipes, and games for each release to enhance the Movie Night experience.

NHL and Plus Licens Enlist Licensees and Retailers to Merchandise Program

The National Hockey League (NHL) has made key additions to its roster of international licensees and retailers in order to provide a broader array of NHL-licensed products to ice hockey fans in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, Sweden, Germany, Finland, and the UK. New licensees include Sportmarket Nordic AB, TShirt Store AB, Almedahls AB, and Newtop Oy.


Warner Bros. Signs Multi-Year Partnership with NBA

Warner Bros. Consumer Products EMEA has signed a multiyear agreement with the National Basketball Association (NBA) to launch a joint initiative featuring the Looney Tunes characters across consumer products, events, and promotional campaigns in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
“Looney Tunes Active! has been widely successful in communicating the importance of living an active lifestyle to children,” said Pilar Zulueta, Executive Vice President and General Manager of WBCP EMEA. “The partnership with the NBA provides us with direct access to a vast new audience and an opportunity to leverage our iconic Looney Tunes characters to promote the importance of living an active lifestyle through basketball.  ‘Cool Characters, Hot Hoops’ is a fun, interactive initiative, and the partnership with the NBA, one of the most respected sports brands in the world, can only serve to drive Looney Tunes Active! to even greater heights.”
