Sonic the Hedgehog Returns to TV

Sega has announced that Sonic, the iconic blue hedgehog with four TV series and more than 70 video games, is set to return to TV screens next year in a CGI-animated series. Produced by Sega of America Inc. and Genao Productions, the Sonic the Hedgehog series will premiere in the U.S. on Cartoon Network, and on Canal J and Gulli in France, with a global rollout to follow.

Discovery Communications Partners with HNJ for New Honey Boo Boo Products

Discovery Communications and HNJ Jewelry have partnered to produce a line of jewelry set to hit retail next year inspired by the TLC series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. The merchandising program already features a book and novelty items, including posters and wall calendars. The jewelry line will launch with a starter bracelet and charms inspired by tiaras, Glitzy the pig, and more, while each item will vary among silver, gold, bronze, and alternative metals. Big Ten Entertainment, on behalf of Discovery Communications, brokered these deals and continues to grow the licensing program across major product categories.

Burger King Launches Digitally Interactive Toys for The Simpsons Superheroes Kids Meal Program

Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products (FCP) and Burger King Worldwide Inc. have introduced digitally interactive The Simpsons toys into Burger King Kids Meals in North American and Latin America. Burger King Kids Meals will come with one of six unique Simpsons superhero toys, each featuring a superpower brought to life through a digital game. The Simpsons Kids Meal toys will serve as virtual joy sticks that allow kids to interact with the digital game through motion detection technology and the use of a webcam. At, users can battle a range of villains directly from Springfield.

First Slugterra TV Movie Set to Launch Next Spring

Nerd Corps Entertainment has announced that the first Slugterra TV Movie, Slugterra: Ghoul from Beyond, is in production to be released next spring. The one-commercial-hour movie will continue the original story of the Slugterra TV series, which currently airs worldwide on Disney XD and free TV.
Several new licensing and distribution deals have also been signed for Slugterra this year.  New licensing categories set to launch worldwide next year include stationery, apparel, dress-up, trading cards, back-to-school products, snacks, and more. The Jakks Pacific toy line, which currently includes slug figures, blasters, and darts, will soon expand to include human and vehicle figures followed by plush and stretchy Velocimoph fliers.

Frederic Soulie Promoted to SVP of Global Distribution at Saban Brands


 Saban Brands has announced the promotion of Frederic Soulie to senior vice president of Global Distribution. Soulie will continue to oversee the worldwide distribution strategy of Saban Brands’ properties across the TV, home entertainment, and digital platform categories. While managing ongoing and collaborative efforts to distribute the company’s entertainment properties, he will also work closely with Saban Brands’ President Elie Dekel and Chief Operating Officer Janet Scardino.

Fashion Design House Evy of California Joins Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. Brand  

Bandai Co. Ltd., represented by Sync Beatz Entertainment (North America) and Evolution USA LLC (U.S.), has partnered with Evy of California Inc. to create a complete line of girls clothing inspired by the Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. brand. Evy of California will serve as the exclusive U.S. license for girls apparel, including activewear, body suits, dresses, fleece, T-shirts, knit shirts/tops, leggings, pants, rompers, shorts, skirts, sweaters, sleepwear, and outerwear, expected to be ready for the back-to-school season next year. The partnership of Evy and Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. follows an earlier announcement that Mighty Fine Inc. will produce Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. apparel for juniors.

Wicked Cool Toys Signs As Master Toy Licensee for Wild Kratts

Wicked Cool Toys has been appointed as the master toy licensee for the PBS Kids series Wild Kratts. The licensing agreement between the Kratt Brothers Co. and 9 Story Entertainment grants Wicked Cool the exclusive worldwide rights to develop and market a comprehensive line of figures, plush, vehicles, play sets, and role-play products based on Wild Kratts, which airs more than 10 times per week on PBS Kids.

Penguin Young Readers Group Publishes The Hive Storybooks

The Joester Loria Group, North America licensing agent for The Hive, has partnered with Penguin Young Readers Group as the new U.S. children’s publishing partner on behalf of Space Enterprises. The program will include readers, 8x8 storybooks, sticker books, and e-books with enhanced Read-to-Me functions set to launch in the spring 2015.

The Joester Loria Group has been named celebrity chef and restaurateur, Fabio Viviani’s exclusive licensing agent. The Joester Loria Group, known for its award-winning brand-building programs will be developing an integrated licensing and merchandising program that includes food, wine, spirits, housewares, cookware, and gifts.


Big Tent Entertainment Signs International Licensing Deals for Domo

Big Tent Entertainment has signed four new product deals for the Domo brand. New agreements with companies in the UK, Benelux, and France will introduce products from plush to phone sleeves. CoverYours has signed for branded mobile phone cases in the UK; Stationery Team International has signed for branded school supplies and accessories, writing instruments, bags, backpacks, lunchboxes, and drinking bottles in Benelux; Accessories Trade Marc has signed for branded backpacks, messenger bags, purses, wallets, hats, caps, gloves, scarves, belts, and umbrellas in France; and Imagine Consumer Products Network has signed for branded plush, keyrings, collectible figurines, backpacks, and hot water bottle covers in France.

Tree Fu Tom Announces Six European Deals

FremantleMedia Kids and Family Entertainment has increased its global reach for preschool adventure series Tree Fu Tom. Recent deals will take the brand to Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Ireland, Greece, Spain, and Portugal where the series will air.

Plants vs. Zombies Links with Cooneen for New Clothing Range

Bulldog Licensing has signed an agreement with Cooneen for Plants ss. Zombies-branded nightwear and underwear. Bulldog has also developed an in-store program for the brand with Forbidden Planet. Joining an expanding list of partners that includes Character Options, Jazwares, Penguin, Magic Box, Character World, and many more, Cooneen and Forbidden Planet’s new product lines will launch in the UK this year until the licensing program rolls out more widely across Europe next year.

Sony Pictures Consumer Products Partners with Rocket Licensing

Sony Pictures Consumer Products has appointed Rocket Licensing as its new licensing agent to manage its portfolio of theatrical and TV properties in the UK and Eire.
Rocket and Sony will launch a licensing program for the 30th anniversary of Ghostbusters next year and they will expand categories for the TV series Breaking Bad.  Rocket will also manage classic titles, including Fantasy Island, The Karate Kid, Bewitched, Taxi Driver, Starsky & Hutch, and Charlie’s Angels. Theatrical films will also be a part of their portfolio, including Hotel Transylvania 2 in 2015.

MIPCOM News from Zodiak for Zack & Quack

Zodiak Kids has announced sales for new a kids’ show Zack & Quack.  The 3-D animated preschool series made its debut at MIPCOM.
New pre-sales include Treehouse in Canada, Discovery Kids Latin America, France TV, YLE in Finland, and Turkey’s Minika. DVD partners have also been secured in North America, including Phase 4 DVD for the U.S. and Corus DVD for Canada. Zodiak previously announced that it has appointed Nickelodeon as its global broadcaster for the series. The show is expected to debut on Nick Jr. channels worldwide beginning early next year.
Zack and Quack is produced by Zodiak’s own studio The Foundation, in partnership with creators QQD Ltd. and South Korean animation studio High 1 Entertainment.

ELC Takes on Zenit

The European Licensing Company (ELC) now represents one of the biggest football clubs in Russia: Zenit St. Petersburg.
“Representing the biggest football club in Russia is a major development for us and we are delighted to have signed this deal with Zenit St. Petersburg,” says Hakan Durdag, CEO at ELC. “Our wide-ranging experience of sports licensing is combined with our innate understanding of the Russian market and we will be working hard to develop the Zenit brand across Russia by extending it into a whole host of categories.”
Dmitry Mankin, commercial director of FC “Zenit” adds:  “ELC has already shown itself as a trusted partner in the field of sports licensing, representing such famous football brands like Juventus, Barcelona and Manchester United in Russia and Europe. Outfit7 Hires Renowned Screenwriter for Talking Friends

Outfit7, the entertainment company that created Talking Tom, has hired American screenwriter and producer Joe Ansolabehere to create a TV series based on Talking Tom and his Talking Friends.
Codenamed Tom on the Road, the 52 x 11-minute series will be in CGI format. 
“Creating a TV show is the next exciting step for the popular Talking Friends Franchise, who started life in the mobile world and gained millions of fans worldwide with its humor and charm,” said Alessandro Traverso, chief operating officer, Outfit7. “Talking Tom and his Talking Friends have already made it in the video world and performed chart-topping singles that have helped to drive global merchandise sales – a TV series is the next natural progression and we are thrilled to have Joe Ansolabehere bring Talking Friends to TV.”
The launch of a new TV series is part of Outfit7’s broader content strategy, which will also provide animation and video on YouTube and other platforms.

Silvergate Announces New deals for Octonauts

Silvergate Media has announced a raft of new international sales for its preschool property Octonauts.
Seasons two and three of the show have been acquired by Disney (Japan), RTE (Ireland), Super RTL (Germany), Treehouse (Canada), and YLE (Finland), in addition to the existing broadcast deals for these seasons with CBeebies (UK), the Disney Junior block on Disney Channel (U.S.), and ABC (Australia).
New deals have also been concluded for season one of Octonauts in Hungary, South Korea, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, and Kosovo.

Hit Entertainment Signs Multiple Broadcast Deals for Portfolio of Properties

At MIPCOM this week, Hit Entertainment announced sales of more than 120 hours for its portfolio, including Mike the Knight, Thomas & Friends, and Fireman Sam. The deals significantly increase the global footprint of Hit’s brands with sales to TV and digital platforms across Europe, Australia, Latin America, and Asia.
Series eight of Fireman Sam has been picked up by France 5, while Universal France has acquired the home entertainment rights for series six through eight. Also in France, Lagardère Group has steamed ahead to secure the rights for series 13, 16, and 17 of Thomas & Friends. This move will see the program rebranded for the group’s family network Gulli and preschool channel Tiji. Spanish broadcaster Boing has picked up series 15 to 17 of Thomas & Friends and will also air King of the Railway.
Canal+ SVoD platform CanalPlay Infinity has acquired Fireman Sam series six and seven and Angelina Ballerina series three to six, while 26 episodes of the first series of Mike the Knight charge onto Netflix Netherlands.
In the Nordic regions, AB Svensk Filmindustri (SF) has secured home entertainment and digital distribution rights for a range of Hit properties, including Bob the Builder, Thomas & Friends, Fireman Sam, Pingu, Mike the Knight, and Angelina Ballerina. As well as being released on DVD, these properties will appear on its SVoD service Children’s SF Favourites, which is available in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland.
In Central Europe, cartoon channel Minimax—owned by ChelloMedia—and Polish channel Minimini have picked up Mike the Knight series two and the ninth series of Fireman Sam.
In Australia, ABC continues its long-standing relationship with Hit Entertainment. The broadcaster has acquired series 17 of Thomas & Friends and the 60-minute special King of the Railway. The channel has also picked up series two of Mike the Knight. Mike the Knight will also make its debut in South East Asia as Mediacorp picked up the first series for Singapore TV channel Okto. As part of the deal, Mediacorp also secured rights for series 17 of Thomas & Friends.
Thomas & Friends is also forging full steam ahead in Latin America, where Discovery Kids has acquired series 17 of the series as well as rights to broadcast King of the Railway

Oxford Signs Three-Year Ukraine Deal

Oxford Ltd. has signed a three-year deal with Top PE to develop a range of back-to-school stationery and bags for the Ukraine market. The agreement was brokered by Oxford’s agent Performance Brands, which also introduced fellow eastern European back-to-school licensees St Majewski (Poland) and Pigna (Romania) to the Oxford brand licensing program last year.

Crimestoppers Brings Licensing Strategy to BLE

Independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers is set to enter the licensing business for the first time. At Brand Licensing Europe (BLE), Crimestoppers, along with JELC, will introduce its new licensing strategy.
The strategy has two main objectives: to work with trusted, quality licensing partners to supply a wide range of safety and security products under the Crimestoppers brand, and to use licensed products to extend to the public the core Crimestoppers messages, including peace of mind and reassurance that Crimestoppers will always be there for them to take information about crime anonymously.
Building on the positive associations of the brand for community protection, Crimestoppers is exploring relationships with potential licensees for the supply of personal safety products and services that offer protection. Initial retail outlets are likely to include DIY stores for homeowners and the building trade and garden centres. However, the brand’s longer-term opportunities could extend to supermarkets and high street stores, or any outlet that may stock security items.

Pet Property Joins DRi’s portfolio

DRi is pleased to announce the latest addition to its brand portfolio, Pets Rock. Owned by gift company Takkoda, Pets Rock is a pop culture blend of photography and illustration, and is where pets meet celebrity. The range targets teens and young adults.

“The similarities between the animals and their subjects are truly extraordinary. The brand already has a strong footing in the fashion and gifting/home categories, and also achieved some fantastic high street distribution in the likes of River Island, New Look and Topshop, and we will be looking to build on this success as we expand into new categories and initiatives” said Alicia Davenport, Licensing director at DRi.

Winx Club Tenth Anniversary Celebrated in Cannes

A host of industry figures gathered in at Mip Junior in Cannes on Sunday night for a party to celebrate top Rainbow property Winx Club as it heads toward its 10th anniversary next year. Guests at the party listened to what Winx Club’s 10th anniversary year has in store through a presentation by Rainbow Chairman and CEO Iginio Straffi. Among the developments for next year is the global rollout of a sixth series, which features 26 episodes and saw its premiere on Nickelodeon in the U.S. on September 29 and mixes 2-D and 3-D animation, as well as the release of a third theatrical movie.
The evening continued with talks from two broadcast partners: Luca Milano, head of marketing and animation of Rai Fiction, and Pierluigi Gazzolo,  COO of Viacom International Media Networks. The talk underlined the strength of the relationship between these prestigious organizations and Rainbow. Partygoers also saw a video sneak peek of the new series Royal Academy.

Nelvana Gears Up for Brand Licensing Europe

Nelvana Enterprises will present an array of classic and new content at this year’s Brand Licensing Europe (BLE), including Beyblade, Pinkie Cooper and the Jet Set Pets, Trucktown, and Vintage Babar.
Nelvana Enterprises has teamed up with toy company The Bridge Direct on Pinkie Cooper and the Jet Set Pets, a range of canine-inspired dolls and accessories that include aspects of fashion play, hair play, travel, and pet collectibles. The toy line was launched this summer in the U.S. and is available at Walmart, Target, Toys “R” Us, and In the UK, the line is available at Argos through distributor Flair, and in Russia through distributor Unitoys.
