CBGB, Epic Rights Develop Global Branding Program

CBGBCBGB has named Epic Rights as its global branding, licensing, and rights management representative to manage its brand development.
Epic Rights will develop a global branding campaign, spearheaded by Juli Boylan-Riddles, executive vice president of global strategic partnerships and licensing, for a new generation of rebels that captures the CBGB experience with a broad selection of high-quality products, including apparel, accessories, footwear, electronics, spirits and beverages, and themed entertainment that embody the style that defines CBGB.
Additionally, the new CBGB program created by Epic Rights will include opportunities that can be associated with and will promote the annual CBGB Music and Film Festival, which kicks off this month in New York. Five days of festival events from October 8 to 12 include live performances; premieres and screenings of more than 30 music-themed films; talks with music industry insiders; and other exclusive events taking place in theaters, clubs, galleries, private spaces, rooftops, and hotels throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Rainbow Brands Set for American Expansion

Mia and MeRainbow has added a U.S. agent, Earthbound, to its network of representatives. The agency will represent both Winx Club and Mia and me across the U.S.

Winx Club is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Comprising 156 animated episodes and three feature-length movies that mix 2D animation and CGI, Winx Club follows the adventures of a group of young fairies and combines action and adventure with comedy. Series 6 has just been released and series 7 is currently in production, with a projected release date of 2015. An eagerly anticipated third movie—The Mystery of the Abyss—had its global premiere in Italy this September before hitting territories across the world throughout the rest of the year.

Mia and me is a co-production with Lucky Punch GmbH/M4e that chronicles the adventures of 12-year old Mia in the mystical land of Centopia and mixes live-action with CGI animation. It is currently being shown by more than 70 broadcasters in over 80 territories, with a second series currently in production. A full range of merchandise has been launched in established territories, including a toy line from international toy partner Mattel.

Disguise, DreamWorks Animation Enter Multi-Year Agreement

Disguise Inc. has secured a licensing agreement with DreamWorks Animation to produce Halloween costumes and accessories based on DreamWorks’ portfolio of top entertainment brands. The new agreement grants Disguise rights to manufacture and distribute DreamWorks-branded costumes and accessories for children and adults to all channels in the U.S.
Halloween costumes will be based on DreamWorks Animation properties including Penguins of Madagascar, Home, B.O.O., Kung Fu Panda 3, Shrek, and How to Train Your Dragon 3. The new costumes will be available at retailers nationwide for next year’s Halloween season.

Funrise Toys to Create Line of Plush Madballs Characters

Funrise ToysFunrise Toys will create a new line of toys based on the Madballs franchise from the 1980s. Brokered by AG Properties, the deal permits Funrise to create a line of plush toys with soft accessories based on the traditionally grotesque and satirical brand. The plush toys will extend the line of Madballs products, which includes comics, apparel, wall graphics, stickers, and greeting cards. The plush Madballs will be available next fall.

Popples Receive Netflix Treatment

PopplesSaban Brands and Netflix have announced a playful new kids series based on Popples, the brightly colored creatures that transform from fluffy balls to furry friends and back again, while keeping the same silly spirit of the original Popples characters.
Originally introduced in 1985, Popples made their debut with a successful toy line followed by what became a very popular Saturday morning television show. Netflix will transport viewers into the colorful world of Popplopolis with 26 half-hour episodes, beginning in late 2015.

Big Tent Entertainment, Pebble Partner for Domo Watch Face

DomoBig Tent Entertainment and Pebble Technology Corp. have signed a licensing deal to bring Domo to a new watch face. This marks Pebble’s first licensing partnership.
The new Domo watch face is interactive, allowing fans to use motions and location to activate various responses. Users can press up and down to trigger Domo animations, shake the Pebble for Domo’s angry face, watch Domo get drowsy and fall asleep at nighttime, and set a location for Domo to know when it’s hot outside—he’ll sweat.

Ovation Partners with Shine for Young Marvels

Ovation, America’s only arts network, has partnered with Shine International to introduce its original docu-series Young Marvels to broadcasters around the world. The series, which debuted in the U.S. this summer to critical acclaim, follows eight exceptionally gifted children on their journeys to become successful artists in dance, 
music, vocal performance, and more.
Awarded the Parents Television Council (“PTC”) Seal of Approval, Young Marvels explores the delicate balance these prodigies and their families strive to maintain between nurturing their talents and preserving the semblance of a normal childhood.
“Ovation first worked with Shine to distribute our original series A Chance to Dance so this is a continuation of that positive relationship,” said Brad Samuels, EVP, Content Distribution.  “There are not many shows parents and kids really watch together anymore, but Young Marvels is one we feel will resonate with families all over the world.”


SCEE Signs Licensees for Lemmings

LemmingsSony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) is embarking on a licensing program for Lemmings, one of the video game world’s most iconic and well-known franchises. Three licensees have been appointed with Paladone (mugs, fridge magnets), Bioworld (adult and kids apparel, nightwear, and loungewear), Gaya Entertainment (apparel, plush, bags, key chains, wall scrolls) and GB Eye (posters, stickers, badges, card holders, and notebooks) all coming aboard to produce retro-focused ranges for the best-selling video game brand, which originally launched in 1991. Product is expected to appear on shelf in early 2015.
Popular for both its fiendish puzzles and its loveably daft lead characters, the Lemmings are a bunch of adorable yet dim-witted green-haired rodents who attempt to travel safely through a series of trap-strewn levels using a variety of special skills, including digging, bashing, building, climbing, and more.

Strawberry Shortcake Program Launches in Nordics

Strawberry Shortcake, the children’s brand from AG Properties, will see a dramatic expansion across the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland this fall, thanks to a new licensing deal between AG Properties (AGP) and strategic partner Tactic Games. They will produce and distribute a variety of publishing products, games, and puzzles, and will serve as distributor in the Nordic region for the new core toy line produced by The Bridge Direct featuring all new packaging.

Poeticgem to Create The Snowman and The Snowdog Nightwear Line

Poeticgem will develop a nightwear line based on The Snowman and The Snowdog film, the sequel to Raymond Briggs’s picture book The Snowman.
The book was adapted into an animated film in 1982 and The Snowman and the Snowdog, which followed in 2012, was broadcast in the UK during the holiday season.
In the partnership with Snowman Enterprises Ltd., Poeticgem will create adult nightwear, underwear, and onesies that will capture the huge appeal of The Snowman and The Snowdog.

Box of Frogs to Create Roobarb and Custard App-Books

robarb custardBox of Frogs will launch three new app-books, based on the Roobarb and Custard characters, which will bring together original script, animations, and interactive narratives in celebration of the cartoon’s 40th anniversary. The first book is set to launch in late October.

BBC Worldwide Appoints Brands with Influence for The Next Step

Brands with Influence (BWI) has been appointed by BBC Worldwide to manage the brand licensing of the tween/teen show The Next Step produced by Temple Street Productions in Canada.  Working closely with BBC Worldwide, BWI will take responsibility for all territories outside of North and South America.
The show has been a success in Canada, Australia and now the UK, with nearly 10 million requests on BBC iPlayer and a second series about to hit screens. On the back of its success, Brands with Influence is going to be presenting the show to licensees for the first time at Brand Licensing Europe (BLE) this year (stand B057) and then at MIPCOM the following week.

Outfit7 Gearing up for BLE

Outfit7 is preparing to return to Brand Licensing Europe, where it will showcase licensing and retail opportunities for its flagship entertainment franchise, Talking Tom and Friends, from booth F065.
At the show, Outfit7 will share news of its expanding global licensing program and upcoming content slate that will substantially boost the profile of Talking Tom and Friends to further position it as a household entertainment brand.
“This year’s BLE will be Outfit7’s most significant to-date,” said Angeles Blanco, senior director of licensing and merchandising at Outfit7’s UK subsidiary. “With 30 licensees around the world and a pipeline of content that promises to expand the licensing proposition for current and potential partners alike, it’s a really exciting time for Talking Tom and Friends.”

DC Thomson Readies its Slate for BLE

DC Thomson Consumer Products will be presenting exciting global opportunities for its rich portfolio of iconic brands and its unique offering as a licensee of third party properties at Brand Licensing Europe 2014 from stand F040.
The Beano and its star characters Dennis the Menace, Gnasher and Minnie the Minx will lead the licensor’s presentation slate, which will also include the classic magazine property Jackie and food brand Maw Broon’s Kitchen. DC Thomson Consumer Products will be unveiling licensing opportunities for its classic portfolio at the show with the ambition to establish its brands in additional international territories and across new demographics.

JELC to Showcase Properties

JELC will present Silentnight, the National Gallery, Hinchcliffe and Barber, The Wisdom of Kids, Gem Fairies, iDoo-B-Doo and Loose Leashes at Brand Licensing Europe.
The fast-growing portfolio of Partner Company Brand Extensions Russia (BER) will also be on display at the JELC stand.

Sainsbury’s Announces Partnership with Centum Books

CartamundisSainsbury’s has announced an exclusive three-year partnership with Centum Books Ltd.
A newly created imprint within Centum Books - Centum Publishing - will develop a range of books aimed at children from birth to seven years old. Their goal is to consolidate and build on the success Sainsbury’s has experienced with the programme of own-brand titles that is currently selected from a range of UK publishers. 
The first phase of new titles will appear in Sainsbury’s stores in September 2015. The hand-picked team created by Phil Carroll, head of books at Sainsbury’s and Geoff Reynolds, managing director of Centum Books Ltd, will take Sainsbury’s own-brand children’s book publishing in a new direction. The Centum Publishing team will be led by Fiona Macmillan.

Sega Signs with Cartorama for Sonic The Hedgehog Back-to-School

Sega Europe will be working Italian back-to-school company Cartorama, which will see Sonic the Hedgehog featured on a line of BTS items in Italy.  The new offering will include BTS accessories from backpacks and stationery to gym bags, and is set to launch in early July 2015.  
Francesco De Luca, Licensing Director at Gruppo Cartorama, comments:  ‘Sonic will be a great addition to the existing portfolio and follows the sales trend in Italy. Notwithstanding the hard economic situation, this kind of licence for BTS, the gaming industry are increasing the sales results year by year, and are not afflicted by parallel import. We are convinced that the fantastic and dynamic graphics of Sonic will have a great resonance among kids and the gaming community. Our Company and all Marketing and Style Staff are very happy to start this project and work with SEGA”.

Hoho Rights Announces Master Toy Partner for Cloudbabies

CloudBabiesHoho Rights has announced the appointment of IVS Group as the new master toy partner for its pre-school series Cloudbabies.
In the UK IVS Group will sell directly to retailers and via their own established online retail service, while internationally Hoho Rights will work with its sub-agents to appoint distribution partners in the territories where Cloudbabies has been sold.
“This partnership has been borne out of a mutual passion for brand building.  Namita Kapoor and her team at IVS have a fantastic track record in product development and international distribution thanks to their work over the years with big name licensors” says Helen Howells, joint MD Hoho Entertainment.  “Their passion, commitment and enthusiasm for Cloudbabies mirrors ours and we have absolute faith that they will develop a product range which will see Cloudbabies around for a very long time to come.”

IMG and Topman in Partnership

IMG and Topman PartnershipIMG and Topman have announced a new collaboration between American Freshman and Jamal Edwards, the founder of online youth broadcaster, SB.TV, which will see a range of hats available exclusively at Topman.
The collection, which will be launched at Topman’s flagship London store on 9th October, consists of three baseball caps and two reversible bucket hats in distinctive colourful prints such as animal, check and camouflage as well as plain classic styles. 
“As someone who worked in Topman from the age of 16, I never imagined that I would one day have my very own hat range in store,” said Jamal Edwards. “I am so excited to be a part of something that fuses street, digital and high street cultures. To me, this project means 'hard work', 'never give up' and 'always chase your dreams'.”

Dinosaur Train Making Tracks in Europe and Russia

Dinosaur TrainsThe Jim Henson Company’s series Dinosaur Train continues to gain momentum across Europe, with the company signing new licensees in key European territories ahead of this year’s Brand Licensing Europe.
“We have an incredibly strong licensing program across Europe, where Dinosaur Train airs on major TV networks such as Nickelodeon UK, Disney Channel Germany, France TV, and RTVE Clan in Spain,” commented Richard Goldsmith, Executive VP, Global Distribution and International Consumer Products.  “We work with exceptional licensing agents in these countries who have done an great job delivering top quality products, and with over 35 licensees in Western Europe alone, and new toy products from TOMY and educational learning titles from VTech debuting in key markets for the holiday season, we anticipate a strong holiday season at retail for the brand.”
In Russia, two Dinosaur Train licensees - C-Trade Ltd and Gruppa Tovarischey LLC - are set to debut over 200 new products in the market.  In Germany, the company has signed a new agreement with Kosmos for travel games, and new products launching this fall include magazines from Panini, partyware from Papstar, housewares from Herding and plush from Huenec.  Other key partners in the territory include Universal Music (audio books) and Nelson Verlag (sticker books).  Gemma International and Play by Play have joined in the UK, and further licenses have been signed in Spain.

Disney USA Buys Fourth Season of Octonauts

Disney OctonautsSilvergate Media has announced the sale of the fourth season of its pre-school show, Octonauts to Disney USA.
Octonauts first launched on the Disney Junior block on Disney Channel in January 2012.  Octonauts’ fans are currently seeing season three which is premiering across 2014 on Disney Channel with daily airings also on the 24-hour Disney Junior channel.  The newest acquisition, season 4, is scheduled to air in 2015.

Q Pootle 5 Heading Around the Globe

Q Pootle 5ZDF Enterprises has announced deals for Q Pootle 5, which see it acquired by CBeebies Africa, Ketnet (Belgium), SVT (Sweden), NPO (Netherlands) and NRK (Norway). These new sales mean the series, which is produced in the UK by Snapper Productions, is now set to air in more than 70 countries worldwide.
Q Pootle 5 is based on the best-selling books by children’s author and illustrator Nick Butterworth and follows the adventures of the friendly little alien and his friends, Oopsy, Eddi, Stella, Ray, Groobie, Bud-D and Planet Dave as they tackle the everyday problems of the final frontier. The series airs in the UK on CBeebies and, as previously announced, has also been picked up by VGTRK (Russian Public TV), YLE 2 (Finland), TG4 (Ireland), HOP!TV (Israel), MTVA (Hungary), KiKA (Germany) and ABC (Australia).

Third Series of Slugterra Announced

Nerd Corps Entertainment has greenlit a third season of its boys action property Slugterra, following a year of top ratings, toy sell-outs and new licensing deals for the brand around the globe.
The new season follows three Slugterra TV movies that rolled out in 2014, including Slugterra: Return of the Elementals, which had a limited theatrical release in North America in August. The third movie, titled Slug Fu Showdown, and 17 new one-minute “slugisode” shorts are also currently in production, slated for fall 2014, and global rollout for all three movies on Disney XD and free-to-air is underway.
“Slugterra has seen tremendous success all over the world this year,” said Ken Faier, President of Nerd Corps Entertainment. “With over 60 licensees on board, broadcasters in 170+ countries airing the series, and top ratings and great toy sell-through all over the globe, kids worldwide are crazy for slugs, and we’re feeding the frenzy with a new season.”

Viz Media to Distribute Terraformers

VIZ Media Europe has announced the European distribution of Terraformers, the new Sci-Fi Thriller Manga animated TV series, produced by Warner Entertainment Japan.
Co-produced by Japanese publisher Shueisha and Warner Entertainment Japan, Terraformers is the new science fiction animated TV series adapted from the Yu Sasuga & Kenichi Tachibana manga, that sold over 5 millions copies in Japan to date! This science fiction adventure, between Alien and Mimic, is already licensed for publishing in France, Italy, Germany, Spain and the UK.


Little Airplane Announces Further Small Potatoes Deals

Little AirplaneLittle Airplane Productions has announced three more deals for its Small Potatoes franchise, which will see the animated entertainment film, Meet the Small Potatoes air on ABC4Kids in Australia on Saturday, 4th October. In addition Once in Mexico have also acquired the animated special which will air later this year and French language broadcaster TV5 Quebec in Canada have acquired the 26 x 3’ series.
Meet the Small Potatoes is an animated Rock Mockumentary written and directed by Little Airplane’s President, Josh Selig. 
The Small Potatoes series follows the adventures of a band of four adorable singing potatoes and helps young viewers learn about different styles of music.


GBI to Launch on Discovery Kids Asia

GBI AsiaGenius Brands International (GBI) has licensed children’s series Thomas Edison’s Secret Lab and Secret Millionaires Club to Discovery Kids Asia. The shows are set to launch on Discovery Kids Asia next year, and will be available to nearly 30 million viewers across the region in Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Australia.
