Genius Brands Expands Licensing Program for New Preschool Series Rainbow Rangers

Genius Brands International continues to build the licensing program for its animated preschool series Rainbow Rangers with the appointment of new licensees, including Global Design Concepts Inc. for bags and luggage, Handcraft for underwear, and Taste Beauty for bath and beauty products.
 
Currently in development of season one and two, Rainbow Rangers is set to premiere next year, with a retail program spearheaded by master toy partner Fisher-Price. Previously announced licensing partners include H.E.R. Accessories for accessories, Bentex for apparel, and Franco Manufacturing for bedding and home décor.
  
Rainbow Rangers is a behind-the-curtain peek at the lives of Earth's First Responders, whose mission is to help protect the earth’s environment and its animal inhabitants. The series blends fantasy and action-adventure with relatable stories about friendship and saving the environment.  

IMG, Bear Grylls Partner to Create Survival Sport Challenge Series

IMG partnered with survival expert Chief Scout and international TV host Bear Grylls to create the Bear Grylls Survival Challenge (BGSC), the first event series to focus on survival.

The inaugural event will take place next April in the Greater Los Angeles Area with additional stops in the U.S. and Europe. Participants will compete on a four-mile, off-road journey that will take them through 18 survival scenario challenges. The course will run across five distinct environments: apocalyptic highway, cave complex, deserted village, mountain ascent and descent, and snake infested swamp.

The event will deploy radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology and a proprietary algorithm to provide a Bear Grylls Survival Score for each participant immediately upon completing the event. To help cross the finish line, each participant will also receive a custom Bear Grylls Survival Pack with everyday items for application on the course. BGSC will culminate in a festival featuring music, brand activations, food and beverages, and merchandise.

Registration for the Los Angeles event will open in this month. The event will be at the Blue Cloud Movie Ranch (bluecloud.com) in Santa Clarita, California on April 28 and 29, 2018. For additional information, visit beargryllssurvivalchallenge.com.

FremantleMedia Kids & Family, Galaxy Optical Sign Danger Mouse Deal

FremantleMedia Kids & Family signed a deal with Galaxy Optical to produce a range of Danger Mouse-inspired frames for Tesco Opticians.
 
The range will be available this month and distributed by Galaxy Optical in more than 200 Tesco Opticians stores. The collection will include 12 different Danger Mouse designs, accompanied by a bespoke glasses case. For four weeks starting August 26, promotional activity will also be available and will include point of sale (POS), gift-with-purchase, competitions, and more.
 
Danger Mouse is an animated comedy that follows the adventures of the eponymous secret agent and his faithful sidekick Penfold as they engage in mind-blowing missions aided, abetted, and aggravated by a menagerie of old and new allies and adversaries.

Pocket.watch Names Former Genius Brands President as Chief Revenue Officer 

Pocket.watch appointed Stone Newman as chief revenue officer. Stone will oversee all of pocket.watch’s revenue generating activities, and will launch licensing and merchandising initiatives, sponsorships and brand integrations, and the global sales of premium content.

Newman will focus on sponsorship and brand integration sales of pocket.watch’s YouTube channels and its marquee YouTube creator partnerships. He will drive pocket.watch’s initiatives into licensing and merchandising, and will be responsible for bringing pocket.watch’s series to TV and streaming distributors in global markets.

Prior to joining pocket.watch, Newman was president of global consumer products licensing, worldwide content sales and marketing for Genius Brands International, where he oversaw the company’s global content distribution business. He helped Genius Brands secure its first content sales to Nickelodeon and Netflix, secured a worldwide master toy deal with Fisher-Price, and launched the YouTube brand SpacePop, where he served as producer and co-creator.

Eric Karp Named Head of Licensing for BuzzFeed Product Labs

Eric Karp was appointed as head of licensing for BuzzFeed Product Labs, where he will lead the company's licensing operation for the new group that focuses on creating physical products and social commerce experiences at BuzzFeed.  
 
The new hire marks a milestone in the growth of BuzzFeed Product Labs and the company’s efforts to create new revenue as it builds more original intellectual property (IP). Karp will be responsible for building partnerships around brands including Tasty and Nifty, as well as for IP derived from BuzzFeed’s original editorial and series.

BuzzFeed Product Labs was established last October and has introduced products including personalized Tasty Cookbooks, Homesick Candles, the Tasty One Top, and more.
 
Karp will focus on building partnerships to create licensing opportunities with BuzzFeed’s brands like Tasty, Nifty, Top Knot, and BuzzFeed’s quizzes and lists. He will further build BuzzFeed’s licensing organization, leveraging the company’s audience scale and content to create partnerships.

Karp joins BuzzFeed from Crayola, where he served as the general manager of licensing for North America. Karp will report to Ben Kaufman, BuzzFeed’s head of Product Labs and will be based in New York.

Caswell-Massey, The New York Botanical Garden Launch New Bath Collection

Caswell-Massey and The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) will introduce a new collection of bath products with fragrances inspired by the NYBG.
 
Sets of three of Caswell-Massey’s luxury soaps and hand creams will launch next month and feature three classic floral fragrances: Lilac, Gardenia, and Honeysuckle. All products will feature NYBG packaging and botanical illustrations from the Rare Book and Folio Collections of NYBG’s LuEsther T. Mertz Library. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these products will support NYBG’s work in plant research and conservation, horticulture, and education.
 
Future plans for the partnership include the development of a new fragrance that utilizes the botanicals found at NYBG. This will merge the knowledge of master gardeners and perfumers from the fragrance industry brand International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF).

Rovio’s Revenue Increased by 94 Percent in the Second Quarter

Rovio Entertainment Ltd.’s growth continued in the second quarter of this year, with the company’s revenue increasing to EUR 86.2 million. The year-on-year revenue increase was 94 percent, mainly due to the performance of Rovio’s games, and the revenue from The Angry Birds Movie release last May. During second quarter, Rovio also launched two new games: Battle Bay and Angry Birds Evolution.
 
The revenue of the games business unit increased by 65 percent and amounted to EUR 61.3 million. The growth was driven by a 30 percent increase in the number of monthly paying users, and a 51 percent increase in revenue per monthly paying user.
 
The revenue of the brand licensing business unit increased by 242.6 percent to EUR 24.9 million. The strong revenue growth was also due to revenues from The Angry Birds Movie.
 
In the second quarter, Rovio’s adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) increased to EUR 31.6 million. The increase was mainly driven by the revenue growth of games and the revenue from The Angry Birds Movie. In the second quarter of this year, the adjusted EBITDA margin increased to 36.7 percent.

The adjusted EBITDA of the games business unit increased by 30.6 percent to EUR 13.5 million, and that of the brand licensing business unit increased to EUR 20.7 million. The EBITDA growth of the brand licensing business was also driven by revenues from The Angry Birds Movie.
 
In the first half of this year, Rovio’s revenue increased by 94.3 percent year-on-year, and totaled EUR 152.6 million. The revenue of the games business unit increased by 76.3 percent to EUR 117.9 million. The revenue of the brand licensing business unit increased by 197.8 percent and amounted to EUR 34.6 million.
 
Rovio’s adjusted EBITDA increased to EUR 41.8 million. The adjusted EBITDA of the games business unit increased by 33.9 percent to EUR 22.5 million. The adjusted EBITDA of the brand licensing business unit increased to EUR 24.3 million.

    • Responsible for managing licensee press releases, cross marketing and promotions

  • Negotiate new licensed strategic partnerships for assigned segments in conjunction with established category strategies

Having licensed book content to a wide variety of customers from national Newspapers to international Publishers I would relish the experience to work in a new industry, licensing new content to new clients.
 
I realise that a move across from traditional publishing may mean a step down from the managerial role I was in before. I'm enthusiastic to work in a new industry and feel my skills are easily transferable and am happy to look outside licensing roles also.
