Toy States Partners with WBCP for DC Super Friends

Toy State has gained the rights to produce a line of DC Super Friends products through a global licensing deal with Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP).
 
"It's with great excitement that we announce our new global partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products," says Andy Friess, Toy State president. "DC Comics is a legendary brand and has been redefining the Super Hero genre for decades. We look forward to adding Toy State product design and innovation to DC Super Friends at retail."
 
Toy State's product line will include R/C vehicles that feature popular DC Comics characters, and will incorporate lights and sound features. Distributed under the Nikko brand, product is scheduled to hit retail shelves next year.

9 Story Media Signs Three Programs to Hulu

9 Story Media Group has given Hulu video-on-demand rights to Get Ace (52 11-minute episodes), Nerds and Monsters (40 11-minute episodes), and Joe and Jack (13 7-minute episodes). All three shows will be available to stream on Hulu in the U.S. within the safe, commercial-free Hulu Kids environment.
 
9 Story has previously licensed the kid’s series Almost Naked Animals to the platform, along with the animated sitcom Fugget About It, which launched on Hulu in 2013.

Doctor Who Travels Across Time and Space in Lego Dimensions

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has revealed that Doctor Who’s Peter Capaldi, who plays the 12th Doctor; Jenna Coleman, who plays Clara Oswald; and Michelle Gomez, who plays Missy; will voice their respective characters from the TV series in Lego Dimensions. The announcement was made at Comic-Con International: San Diego.
 
In a new trailer giving the first look at the Doctor Who gameplay, worlds collide as the TARDIS pop up in Gotham City and Hill Valley and the Doctor battles alongside Homer Simpson.
 
Doctor Who, which has never before been in a Lego videogame, will be playable in the Lego Dimensions Starter Pack with a complete Doctor Who level where the game’s heroes continue their quest while encountering Daleks, Cybermen, and other adversaries from the Whoniverse.

Super Wings Merchandise Flies into North America

Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana Enterprises has signed a deal with CJ E&M to represent the North American merchandise licensing rights for the preschool series, Super Wings. Nelvana will represent Super Wings in all merchandise categories with the exception of toys, which will be distributed by Auldey Toys North America in the U.S., and Imports Dragon in Canada.
 
Super Wings, co-produced by FunnyFlux Entertainment, has aired in more than 40 countries worldwide. In the U.S., Super Wings currently airs on Sprout, and the series will launch on Canada’s preschool network, Treehouse this fall.
 
Super Wings follows the adventures of Jett, a jet plane who travels around the world delivering packages to kids with his group of airplane friends, the Super Wings. The Super Wings have the ability to transform into heroes who can run, climb, dig, and swim.

FremantleMedia Previews Danger Mouse News at Comic-Con

FremantleMedia Kids & Family Entertainment’s reboot of the ’80s animated series Danger Mouse debuted at Comic-Con 2015 in San Diego last week, with a panel discussing the series’ return and exclusive casting news.
 
The new series is set to screen on CBBC in the UK later this year and roll out in the U.S. and internationally on Netflix in 2016. The Comic-Con panel consisted of Chair Bob Higgins (Aquabats Supershow, The Ricky Gervais Show) and executive producer of the series for FremantleMedia Kids & Family Entertainment with Chapman Maddox (Grojband, Max Steel), Sarah Muller (executive producer and head of CBBC acquisitions, animation and drama development Wolfblood, Strange Hill High), and lead writer Ben Ward (Horrible Histories, Tracy Beaker).
 
The panel revealed that actress Lena Headey (Game of Thrones, Dredd) and leading comedian, satirical presenter, and talk show host John Oliver (Last Week Tonight with John Oliver) are set to join the multi-talented voice cast, with Headey providing the super smart tones of U.S. Secret Agent Jeopardy Mouse, and Oliver breathing life into mad scientist wolf Dr. Augustus P Crumhorn III.
 
It was also revealed exclusively that villainous vampire duck and original Danger Mouse spin off character Count Duckula will appear in the new series, testing Danger Mouse’s resolve with his traditionally dark and dangerous ways.

Jamba Juice and ClassPass Team Up with Venus Williams

Jamba Juice Co. has teamed up with ClassPass, a fitness membership, for a special event collaboration to unveil three new flavor additions to its Freshly Squeezed Juice line; Veggie Vitality, Cucumber Orange Cooler, and Orange Supreme. ClassPass will help Jamba Juice tap into its engaged and active consumer base, and in partnership promote the healthy living pairing: juice and fitness.
 
With the support of tennis champion Venus Williams, Jamba Juice and Venus celebrated the new juice launch in New York City and surprised various ClassPass-affiliated studios across the city with Jamba's refreshing juices post-workout.

McDonald’s of Southern California Offers Minions Happy Meal Toys

In partnership with NBC/Universal, McDonald’s is bringing Minions to kids and families across Southern California though July. The Minions trio of Kevin, Stuart, and Bob has taken over McDonald’s Happy Meals, which will include one of 12 Minions sound toys and a choice of Minion-themed milk, apple slices, or a strawberry-banana flavored Yoplait Go-Gurt. With every Happy Meal sold at participating McDonald’s restaurants, the McDonald’s Operators’ Association of Southern California will donate a portion of the proceeds to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California (RMHCSC), which helps keep families close to critically-ill children.

Meredith Digital Expands with Grocery Server Acquisition

Meredith Corp., a media and marketing company, has acquired Qponix, a Grocery Server technology, further expanding its digital shopper marketing capabilities. Grocery Server was a joint venture between MyGroceryDeals.com and Qponix that indexes thousands of local offers nationwide to help consumers find the best deals at their local retailer. MyGroceryDeals.com will partner with Meredith and continue to supply all the grocery deal data along with nearly 150,000 localized advertising specials per month, in every residential zip code in the U.S.
 
Meredith Digital currently reaches more than 70 million unique visitors per month, and nearly two-thirds of millennial women across its broad portfolio of magazine and digital brands.

Yu-Gi-Oh!’s Kazuki Takahashi Wins Inkpot Award at Comic-Con

Comic-Con International: San Diego presented its prestigious Inkpot Award – recognizing individuals for their contributions to the world of comics, science fiction/fantasy, film, television, animation and fandom services – to Kazuki Takahashi, renowned manga artist and creator of the popular Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise.
 
“I am deeply honored to receive Comic-Con’s Inkpot Award and am humbled to be held in the same regard as the revered animators, authors, filmmakers and artists that have been recognized for their passion and contributions to the arts,” said Mr. Takahashi upon learning of his selection for this year’s award.
 
“Mr. Takahashi’s passion and talent has created a global phenomenon – Yu-Gi-Oh! - that has introduced manga to legions of fans around the globe,” explained David Glanzer, spokesperson for Comic-Con International. “We were thrilled that he was able to join us at this year’s Comic-Con and very inspired by his creative ideas and observations.”

Lipsy and Syco’s Fleur East Enter Partnership

Lipsy has announced its newest signing to the brand; X Factor star, Fleur East.
 
Following on from her 2014 success on the X Factor, Lipsy has signed to work with East collaboratively to create the Fleur East by Lipsy collection. The collection will be sold via Lipsy retail and franchise outlets and Lipsy’s website (www.Lipsy.com) as well as Next.co.uk, all Next international websites and exclusive Lipsy wholesale accounts.
 
Launching this September, the collection will comprise 20+ pieces that have been co-designed with Fleur and Lipsy’s in-house design team. The collection has been influenced by the star’s personal style and look as well as the AW15 trends and
international runway shows to create a signature range identifiable with both Fleur
and Lipsy’s handwriting.

The Entertainer Appoints New Head of Buying and Merchandising

The Entertainer, the multichannel high street toy retailer in the UK, has announced the recent appointment of Mark Whittle as Head of Buying and Merchandising.
 
Mark will be working closely with the senior management team reporting directly to Stuart Grant and will have responsibility for all aspects of the buying and merchandising of current and new stores opening in this year.
 
Mark will bring his considerable expertise from his role as Senior Toy Buyer at Argos and previously at Tesco where he created and launched the new toy brand ‘Carousel’, which is now a global brand for the retailer. His earlier position, for over fifteen years, was as Toy Buyer at Woolworths prior to which he worked for the group as a store manager and then moved to head office to join the buying and visual display team. He will purchase across all categories and will help Stuart expand the buying team and build structures and processes as The Entertainer continues its rapid growth.
 
Stuart Grant, Buying Director of The Entertainer, said of the appointment: "We are delighted that Mark has joined The Entertainer. With his extensive knowledge of purchasing within the toy industry we are confident he will ensure we continue to offer our customers the right products at the right price and support our ambitious programme of store expansion."

MWWPR to Promote Licensing for LIMA and Brand Licensing Europe 2015

MWWPR has been appointed by the Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA), the leading trade organisation for the global licensing industry, to drive profile for the licensing industry in the UK and Europe. Brand Licensing Europe (BLE), the definitive event for the European licensing industry, has also appointed the agency for its sixth consecutive year, to build national and international awareness of the show.
 
Both campaigns will run from the summer to raise profile of the licensing industry with the UK and European business community, culminating around the Brand Licensing Europe event on October 13-15.

Teletubbies Heading to Italy with Rai

DHX Media has licensed its new and classic Teletubbies series to Italian broadcaster Rai.
 
The deal sees Rai’s preschool-skewing channel, Rai YoYo, acquiring rights to air DHX’s brand new 60 x 12’ Teletubbies series, which is currently in production and set to debut on the UK’s CBeebies later this year, as well as seasons 1 – 14 of the classic Teletubbies show.
 
Josh Scherba, SVP Distribution of DHX Media, said: “This deal with Rai and recent sales in the US and France underscore the considerable appetite globally for Teletubbies. That broadcasters are keen to snap up both the new and classic series highlights that this is a property with enduring appeal, poised to win a new generation of fans.”

Shaun the Sheep Land to Open in Sweden

Aardman and Skånes Djurpark have partnered to bring the first international Shaun the Sheep family attraction to Sweden next summer.
 
“It will be a world’s first and a great way to give families an opportunity to immerse themselves into the fun and excitement of Shaun the Sheep,” says Sean Clarke, head of rights and brand development at Aardman.

AUSTRALIA

Thunderbirds Are Go Products Take Off in Australia

Merchantwise, ITV Studios Global Entertainment’s (ITVS GE) appointed licensing agency in Australia, will host new licensing and retail partners for the TV series Thunderbirds Are Go.
 
Vivid Imaginations has launched a range of toy vehicles, action figures, and a deluxe Tracy Island Playset. The line is distributed by HeadStart and available at Myer, Toys “R” Us, Big W, Target, and independent retailers.
 
Roadshow Entertainment reports strong sales of its first two Thunderbirds Are Go DVD titles, comprising of the first 13 episodes and bonus schoolbook sticker sheets, and publishing partner Hachette will launch a line of storybooks, sticker books, and activity books in August.
 
Thunderbirds Are Go, produced by ITV Studios and New Zealand-based Pukeko Pictures in collaboration with Weta Workshop premiered in April and attracts more than 200,000 viewers on Channel 9’s GO! Season one, consisting of 26 22-minute episodes, is currently airing and Season two has been commissioned.

The Art of the Brick: DC Comics to Debut at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney

Lego Artist Nathan Sawaya in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) and DC Comics has created the world’s largest collection of DC Comics-inspired Lego artwork, The Art of the Brick: DC Comics. The exhibition will be on display at the Sydney, Australia’s Powerhouse Museum, part of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS), in November—the first venue to host the exhibition’s worldwide tour. The announcement was made by WBCP at Comic-Con International: San Diego.
 
The contemporary art exhibition takes on the DC Comics’ 80-year history with large-scale sculptures of super heroes and super-villains made entirely out of Lego bricks. Fans at San Diego Comic-Con were given a behind-the-scenes glimpse at several sculptures to be showcased at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum, including interpretations of Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman during the DC Comics Meets Lego Art panel.
