Celessence Technologies, Springs Global Partner for Febreze Sleep Serenity Collection

Springs GlobalCelessence Technologies has partnered with Springs Global, which has acquired the Febreze trademark license from The Procter & Gamble Company to incorporate the Febreze brand in several bedding products nationwide. Using the Celessence Micro-encapsulation, a delivery system that imports fragrance or skincare actives onto multiple surfaces, Spring is able to bring odor elimination and freshness to these products. Major retailers are distributing the Febreze Sleep Serenity line collection.
FebrezeIn addition, Springs has developed KidScentz, a line of kid pillows that utilize Celessence fragrances to deliver scents such as watermelon, bubble gum, cupcake, and bacon.

Proctor & GambleArt + Science, a full service marketing, licensing, and branding company, has been retained by Celessence Technologies to institute licensing arrangements between Celessence and companies around the world. Springs Global manufactures a variety of bedding products; among them, a line of white goods (pillows, mattress covers, and pillow protectors).

LIMA Elects New Board of Directors

Rick Van Brimmer, director of trademark and licensing services for Ohio State University, was elected as The International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association’s (LIMA) vice chairman. He was formerly a member of LIMA’s board.

The Board of Directors elected James Slifer of The Joester Loria Group as vice chairman, while Pete Yoder of Cartoon Network has been voted into the executive committee as the liaison to the board of directors.

In addition, four new members were elected to three-year terms on the LIMA board: Tim Kilpin, executive vice president, global brand international, Mattel Brands; Cindy Levitt, vice president/GMM, Hot Topic; John Parham, president, Parham Santana; and Henry Stupp, CEO, The Cherokee Group.

Sesame Workshop and Ounce of Prevention Fund Partner for New Parent and Child Engagement Initiative

Sesame StreetSesame Workshop and the Ounce of Prevention Fund have partnered to create an innovative digital platform for early learning family engagement. The new initiative is designed to strengthen parents’ understanding of the importance of early education and nurture social-emotional development in their children.
Sesame and the Ounce, in collaboration with the National Head Start Association, will combine their expertise and knowledge in the community to link it to family experiences in the classroom with parent-child learning interactions at home in support of school readiness. This initiative was originally announced by Secretary Hillary Clinton as a part of the Clinton Global Initiative Commitment to Action during this year’s CGI America meeting in Denver.
The launch is anticipated for early next year. The key components to reach families with young children are a mobile platform, social networking, and a toolkit to complement the digital components.
The pilot program is slated to begin in the fall and Sesame Workshop and the Ounce will identify and seek philanthropic support this summer. 

Levi Enters Field Partnership with Feld Motor Sports

The Santa Clara Stadium Authority has announced a multi-year partnership for Levi’s Stadium with Feld Motor Sports. The new home of the San Francisco 49ers will become the newest Bay Area venue to host Monster Jam and Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship. The Bay Area will now be home to four motor sports events per year. 

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood to Premiere on PBS Kids 

Daniel Tiger's NeighborhoodSeason two of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood from the Fred Rogers Co. will launch on August 18 on PBS Kids with a one-hour episode. A new character, Daniel Tiger’s little sister Margaret, will be introduced. The season begins with a week full of new episodes that follow issues young children face with a new sibling. Topics will include feeling left out, being a helper, dealing with the excitement, meeting the new baby, understanding that things may be different, and learning about sharing time and attention.

Humble Dynamite 10th Anniversary Bundle Collection Rewards Fans with Value-Priced Comics and Graphic Novels

Dynamite Entertainment has launched its first ever Humble Bundle promotion to celebrate their first decade of comic book publishing. The promotion will allow fans to purchase more tha 120 digital comic books and graphic novels at a cost of each person’s choosing, giving fans purchasing power. Dynamite will also contribute a portion of the proceeds to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Doctors Without Borders, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The Humble Dynamite 10th Anniversary Bundle event began on June 25 and will run through July 9. In addition, every day throughout the promotion, a digital comic book will be made free to download. 

Genius Brands International, Comcast Partner for Baby Genius Content

Genius Brands International Inc. has partnered with Comcast to distribute Baby Genius content. Comcast will make all episodes of the Baby Genius Nursery Rhymes and Baby Genius Baby Animals series available to Xfinity TV customers to stream online or to download on their app and website. 

LIMA Launches First Multi-Country Consumer Surveys on Kids’ Favorite Brands 

LIMA has introduced the first of a new series of consumer survey reports detailing kids’ favorite brands and characters across a variety of categories in 31 nations worldwide. The Kidz Global Studies are consumer surveys to be released quarterly for nine nations and semi-annually for the remaining 22 countries. LIMA has commissioned Kidz Global to produce the reports.
With each report, BrandTrends will measure the relative awareness, popularity, and merchandise appeal of the top-30 most important brands to children. Every report will identify the most recognizable kid licenses in the country for both boys and girls, by category and in four different age groups from infants to tweens/young teens. Informative “key facts” will be presented throughout the reports to provide further insight into survey results.
Of the 31 countries reviewed annually, surveys covering the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, and the UK will be updated and released quarterly, beginning at this year’s Licensing Expo. Two reports per year will be compiled for the following countries: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, and Turkey.

Mountain Dew Green Label Exclusives, ICNY, Starter Black Label Collaborate for New Line

The Joester Loria Group has brokered a deal for Mountain Dew’s Green Label Exclusives (GLX) program to work with Starter Black Label to create a NYC-inspired capsule collection. GLX and ICNY will use Starter Black Label snapback hats, T-shirts, and hooded fleece to highlight the New York athlete.
The collection is a limited release and will only be available at and flagship stores, Revive in Michigan, Sole Fly in Miami, Compound Gallery in Portland, and Alumni in Brooklyn.

Snap Creative Launches Collectible Toys for Five Summer Blockbusters

Snap Creative will release five collectible and promotional toy programs at movie theaters worldwide for the summer’s top blockbusters. The launch continues to roll out throughout the summer, coinciding with the releases of Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon 2, Paramount and Hasbro’s Transformers: Age of Extinction, Disney’s Planes: Fire & Rescue, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Movie-going fans can collect two or three different highly detailed figures or keychains from each feature, along with reusable cups and popcorn packs. Shout! Factory, Screenvision, and Nerd Corps Entertainment have teamed up to bring a feature-length original movie Slugterra: Return of the Elementals to theaters across the U.S. beginning on August 2. 

Seriously Expands Creative Team, Reaches $5 Million Seed Funding

Mobile brand developer Seriously has added members to its creative team. Philip Hickey has joined the company as vice president, marketing and communications, and will be responsible for marketing properties. He was previously employed at Rovio. Petri Rasanen has joined as a game artist and was part of the team at mobile game developer Rocketpack.
In addition, two advisors have joined the team: Dan Romanelli, founder and president of Warner Bros. Worldwide Consumer Products, and Ujjal Kohli, most recently CEO and co-founder at Rhythm New Media.
Seriously has just doubled its seed funding to $5 million, which will be invested into content development and further building out the team. 


Hoho Rights Appoints Joan Packard Luks for Toddler Time in U.S., Canada

Hoho Rights has appointed Joan Packard Luks from The Serenata Group to represent the pre-school property Toddler Time in the U.S. and Canada. Toddler Time began as interactive books and has since sold more than 750,000 copies worldwide, with more formats to follow over the next 12 months. 

Coolabi Begins Production on New Series 

London-based Coolabi, has commenced production on its brand new stop-motion animated series, Scream Street (52 x 11’), with co-production partner, animation studio, Factory TM.
Lead broadcaster CBBC is on board to air the comedy-horror for 8-10 year olds in the UK. Coolabi has secured ZDF Enterprises as global TV distributor for the series (excluding the UK, US and Australia). ZDF Enterprises has also taken German licensing rights to the property.

Scream Street is being produced by Manchester-based Factory TM, which draws on a wealth of experience in stop-motion animation. Renowned puppet and model-makers Mackinnon & Saunders are creating the cast ensemble. CBBC will start airing the series in 2016, while select footage will be available for the first time at MIPCOM this year.

“Scream Street is a stylish, spooky comedy, full of wonderful characters that will have instant appeal for the older end of the CBBC audience. The style and pace promise to be like no other CBBC stop-frame animated show”, comments Cheryl Taylor, Controller CBBC.
The Walker Books-created thirteen-book series is already a publishing hit with kids globally and has secured a growing fan base since the launch of the first title in 2008. Fans include authors Darren Shan and Philip Reeve, who describes Scream Street as ‘Like Harry Potter with extra bite!’ The books have already sold into territories including USA, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Russia and Sweden. Helen McAleer, Director at Walker Productions, Walker Books’ production division, is an Executive Producer for the television series.

Megalicense to Handle Peppa Pig in Russia

Peppa PigeOne have appointed Megalicense International as their licensing agents for Peppa Pig in Russia and the Ukraine.
With firmly established broadcast platforms on Russia’s No. 1 dedicated children’s TV channel Karusel and PlusPlus in the Ukraine driving demand for official licensed merchandise, Megalicense International will now oversee the development of the award-winning preschool brand in these emerging markets.
Licensing is already underway with Rosman on board for toy, publishing and arts and craft categories in Russia and Kiddisvit for toy in the Ukraine.  Rosman is planning an extensive mass-market, television advertising campaign in October 2014 with own brand products including plush, wooden toys, bath toys and mini world of Peppa Pig collectible products in addition to the core plastic lines from Character Options.

Other licensees include Panini, Perfetti Van Melle for confectionary and Alisa for E.L.A. Kidstime for watches and Hamley’s has committed to a programme of retail promotions for in the run up to Christmas 2014.  Apparel, footwear, accessories, housewares and publishing part works will be added in 2015.

Geromino Stage Shows

Atlantyca Entertainment in Italy has signed with New York-based Theatrical Literary Agency, the Susan Gurman Agency LLC to develop live stage shows based on the Geronimo Stilton book series that are published by Scholastic Inc and have reached sales of 100 Million copies worldwide. The Susan Gurman Agency, which acquired the live stage show rights for the United States, will seek stage production partners to create and produce tour shows tailored both for schools and general audiences beginning in early 2016.

“The Susan Gurman Agency has a remarkable list of clients and access to the best talent to develop the most entertaining ‘Geronimo Stilton’ stage show,” said Claudia Mazzucco, Atlantyca Entertainment’s CEO. “Based on the success of our shows in Europe and Canada, we were determined to find the right theatrical partner to bring our beloved Geronimo Stilton to the stage here in the U.S.  Our loyal young readers can now look forward to seeing the stories they love come alive with these future planned productions.”

Second Season for Heroes of the City

Heroes of the CityWith the first series of Heroes of the City from Sweden already broadcast in 70 countries, the first thirteen episodes of season two (out of a total of 26 x 11 minute episodes) will be released in December this year.

The first series, aimed at children aged between 3 and 7 is already available in 17 language editions with others being added all the time.

In addition, the Heroes of the City movie app has been downloaded more than 120,000 times in Sweden. The book app has been in the Swedish market for two years and has already been downloaded more than 200,000 times. Two new apps are in development and will launch in the latter part of this year and the second quarter of 2015.
In terms of DVD, six different Heroes of the City Special Edition box sets are available, each including four episodes and a die cast toy.  More than 25,000 have been sold in Sweden alone.

On the publishing side the books of the series have been published in the USA, Germany, Turkey, Poland, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Slovenia and Estonia. Merchandise including die cast toys, plush and stationery will be released in the fourth quarter of this year.

New General Manager for Warner Bros. UK and Ireland

Preston Kevin LewisWarner Bros. UK & Ireland have named Preston Kevin Lewis as the new General Manager, Warner Bros. Consumer Products UK & Ireland. The announcement was made by Josh Berger, President & Managing Director, Warner Bros. UK, Ireland & Spain, and Pilar Zulueta, Executive Vice President and General Manager, EMEA, Warner Bros. Consumer Products, to whom Lewis will report.
Lewis is promoted from his current role as Managing Director, Warner Bros. Consumer Products Australia, New Zealand and India, and will be responsible for leading the 12-strong UK team and managing and developing a diverse portfolio of brands and licensees, with responsibility for promoting retailer cross-category plans. He will also join Warner Bros. UK’s Executive Committee when he starts on 1st September.

An eight-year Warner Bros. veteran, Lewis has extensive experience in all aspects of licensing, including strategic planning, operations, marketing, branding and retail sales. He began his career with HBO, where he was latterly Director of Marketing for its US Home Video business in the late ‘90s. From there, he enjoyed successful stints at MTV and The Walt Disney Company before joining Warner Bros. Consumer Products in Burbank as Vice President, International Licensing in 2006.

In a joint statement, Berger and Zulueta said, “We’re delighted that Preston has accepted the offer to move to the UK. He is a top-drawer executive with an enviable track record that has seen him transform Warner Bros. Consumer Products’ operation in Australia and New Zealand by establishing strategic partnerships with a multitude of big-name brands, and leading the division into a variety of new businesses including fashion, accessories, promotions and toys. Based on the experience of working with him already, we have no doubt he will prove to be a terrific addition to the UK team.” 

New Licenses for One Direction

TLC report that after the successful launch of the back-to-school collection developed by Italian licensee Seven, sold in Italy and Spain through independent stores, chain stores, mass retailers, online and wholesalers, a second BTS collection featuring 1D will be released this summer.

In terms of beauty, a direct-to-retail operation has been placed at La Gardenia, in more than 150 stores in Italy, including beauty accessories and gift items and, on the fashion side, Jaxo - the Italian leader in accessories - launched a new range of hats, scarves and gloves this summer also, distributed at mass level and specialty stores in Italy.

On stage, while still on the road for their Where We Are Tour 2014, the chart-topping boyband has already announced another tour. Harry, Zayn, Liam, Louis and Niall will head out on their “On The Road Again 2015” tour from February 2015 onwards. Dates have been confirmed for Asia, Middle-East and South Africa, where tickets are already sold out. European dates are to be revealed soon. You & I is the next single release from the 1D that includes Liam creation of “Big Payno Remix”. 

SmileyWorld Partners with Bluw 

SmileyWorld has announced a new licensing deal with novelty gift and toy company Bluw for Autumn/Winter 2014.

The partnership will see SmileyWorld branded novelty gift and fashion accessories, including socks, distributed across the UK in high street retailers such as Urban Outfitters, River Island and Topshop later this year.

There are also plans for a Smiley stand at Spring Fair in February 2015 to launch the full range of products to retailers, and plans to expand the range beyond the UK to Europe and the US.

Pet Products to Feature Dennis the Menace

The BeanoDC Thomson Consumer Products recently announced a partnership with pet accessories specialists Rupert’s Pet Shop for the launch of the first range of Dennis the Menace and Gnasher dog toys.
Marking the brand’s entrance into the pet sector, the partnership will see the new Dennis the Menace and Gnasher dog toys launch at all 405 Poundstretcher and 55 Pet Hut stores across the UK this summer. 
Designed and developed by Rupert’s Pet Shop, the range will consist of five different dog toys covering all play patterns. The line is also ideal for gift purchasers and pet owners and features a Comic Fetch squeaky fabric toy, the Gnarly Gnasher hairy soft toy, a Whoopee Whiff cushion, a Rough and Tough Menacer fetch toy and Sock Slinger.

LIMA, the licensing industry’s trade body are introducing the first of a new series of consumer survey reports detailing kids’ favorite brands and characters across a variety of categories in 31 nations around the world. LIMA’s new Kidz Global Studies are consumer surveys to be released quarterly for nine nations and semi-annually for the other 22 countries. LIMA has commissioned Kidz Global, a worldwide leader in tracking vital statistics in licensing and branding, to produce the reports, which will be free to LIMA members and accessible on the members-only portion of the LIMA website.

“Our Kidz Global Studies will provide a ranking of children’s preferences — and for kids in the youngest age groups, their parents’ responses — to questions about what they like in entertainment and sports. This information will help licensing teams make the most informed decisions possible for their companies and brands on a market-by-market basis,” said LIMA President Charles Riotto. “We’re very excited to be working with Kidz Global to provide this wealth of actionable information to help our members grow their businesses, their brands and their bottom lines.”

Tuzki Goes to Japan

Tuzki After conquering much of Asia, character brand Tuzki is heading to Japan. Tact Communications, an agency with over 30 years’ experience in character licensing, was appointed by TurnOut Ventures to be the licensing agent for Tuzki in Japan. Tact will manage all Tuzki consumer product, premium and promotional licensing in Japan.  The character will make an appearance at Licensing Japan 2014 this week on the Tact booth.
Tuzki is well-known for his wacky and appealing emoticons on messaging apps and social networks.  Tuzki’s first animation short, Love Assassin, animated by Japan’s STUDIO4°C, was premiered on YouTube this past February and hailed by media as “a highly unusual Valentine’s Day romance.” Tuzki’s target audience is males and females, 18-26 years old. 


La Gallina Pintadita from Brazil

Brazil-based Redibra report that with 400 million YouTube accesses on its Spanish channel, a number that has been growing at a pace of 1.5 Million views a day, la Gallina Pintadita, as it is called in Spanish, is becoming a favorite amongst babies and toddlers.
The property has three assigned agencies that work in Spanish-speaking countries – CPLG (Spain), Televisa (Mexico) and Character Mix (Southern Cone and Colombia) .
In Brazil, where Gallina started, the key to its astounding success is the fact that its songs include very traditional nursery rhymes. As a result, when a mother sings with her baby, it automatically triggers a strong emotional reaction.
For the Hispanic community, the Gallina Pintadita creators Bromelia are including traditional Spanish songs with the plan to continue to expand and create the same emotional connection between parents and kids in other countries, strengthening the brand and as a consequence, increasing the potential for licensed goods.


Licensed Video Game-Based Toys Can Ease Kids into Other Kinds of Play

It’s summertime, which for a lot of kids means playing outside in the sunshine, swimming, and maybe even going on trips to visit nature. But for others, summer means staying indoors and playing video games all day. It’s probably best to moderate any activity that involves staring at a screen; however, the question is, how to get video game-obsessed kids to take up a different form of play?
