PBS Kids to Add New Half-Hour Sesame Street Program

Sesame StreetPBS Kids and Sesame Street will introduce a bonus half-hour program this fall on-air and on digital platforms. The additional program will air on weekday afternoons on PBS stations starting on September 1. In addition, selected first episodes of the 30-minute show will be available for free online, on the PBS Kids Video app, and on PBS Kids' Roku channel.
Each episode will be a shortened version of each one-hour program and will include a “Street Story,” a “Word on the Street” segment, a celebrity vocabulary segment, songs, spoofs, dance breaks, and other segments, such as “Cookie’s Crumby Pictures” or “Super Grover 2.0.” The half-hour version of Sesame Street will also help kids learn a variety of skills, such as school readiness.

eOne Expands U.S. Reach of Peppa Pig Brand

Peppa PigEntertainment One Licensing will expand the Peppa Pig brand in the U.S. with the addition of five new licensing partners in the soft goods category. The announcement comes right after the brand’s new deal with Jazwares, which will be Peppa Pig’s master toy partner for North America beginning next year.
This year, eOne will extend the brand’s plush collection with new U.S. licensing partner Ty. An assortment of Beanie Babies will feature Peppa, Brother George, and other characters from the TV series. The brand will also partner with Happy Threads to launch themed apparel for girls ages 1 to 7. Children will also have access to a collection of backpacks, bags, lunch kits, luggage, headwear, hosiery, and cold weather accessories from Accessory Innovations.
In addition, Character World will launch a collection of Peppa Pig-themed bedding and home accessories, including blankets and throws, bath and beach towels, cushions, and inflatable and bean-filled chairs that will feature the show’s signature graphics and colors. Komar Kids will produce the brand’s first U.S. sleepwear collection for girls ages 1 to 7.

Marvel Entertainment Assembles Merchandising Program for Avengers Sequel

The AvengersMarvel Entertainment has lined up a roster of merchandising partners and retailers that will expand the brand to consumers in anticipation of Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. In addition, Marvel has collaborated with major North American retailers to give fans customized, branded destinations to highlight different elements of the film and its superheroes. 

K’NEX Releases First Line of Plants vs. Zombies Building Sets

PopCap Games Inc. and K’NEX have partnered to introduce the first line of officially licensed building sets inspired by the Plants vs. Zombies games. Fans can now play, collect, and build characters from the line, which includes Mystery Figure Bags, Pirate Ship Building Set, Wall-nut Bowling Building Set, Cone Mech Building Set, Football Mech Building Set, Wild West Skirmish Building Set, Jetpack Zombie Attack Building Set, and Pirate Seas Plank Walk Building Set. Coca-Cola Company,, and 3D Systems Announce 3-D Printing Partnerships 

EkocycleThe Coca-Cola Company and have expanded their sustainability-minded Ecocycle brand with the Ekocycle Cube 3D Printer. The goal of the company is to promote sustainability through aspirational and attainable products made in part from recycled material.
The Ekocycle Cube 3D Printer is a plug-and-play consumer 3-D printer, which allows home users the ability to create 3-D-printed objects made in part from assorted post-consumer recycled 20 oz Pet bottles. Each cartridge can turn the recycled plastic into products including wearable fashion and music accessories.
The touch-screen printer cartridge turns the equivalent of three used bottles into a 3-D printed creation, and prints in 70-micron high resolutions up to six inches cubed in size. The Ekocycle Cube prints in a color palette of red, black, white, and neutral. It can also connect with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and is compatible with the Cubify app for iOS and Android for printing directly from a smartphone.
The Ekocycle Cube 3D Printer will be available at 3DS’ online consumer hub Cubify and is expected to be ready for commercial shipments during the second half of this year. 

Licensing Industry Sales Rise for Third Consecutive Year

According to the Licensing Industry Merchandisers' Association (LIMA) Annual Licensing Industry Survey, sales of licensed products continued their upward trajectory this year for the third straight year, resulting in an estimated $5.655 billion in royalty revenue in the U.S. and Canada. This has translated to $115.75 billion in retail sales. The industry’s largest categories are character, corporate, trademarks, sports, fashion, and collegiate.
Character-related merchandise accounted for $2.66 billion in royalty revenues and an estimated $51.44 billion in retail sales, while corporate and brand name licensing royalties were estimated at $965 million and $22.5 billion in retail sales. Fashion royalties made up the third largest category in licensing with $770 million, accounting for $16.9 billion in retail sales. Sports accounted for royalty revenue of $698 million, translating to retail sales of $12.8 billion.

Linda Castillon Joins

Linda Castillon Linda Castillon has joined as senior vice president of licensing. She will define and execute the brand’s partnership strategy relating to brands and icons in art, entertainment, sports, and other categories.
Castillon has been in the licensing industry for more than 20 years and has previously served as senior vice president of licensing for Fathead LLC and Skinit LLC. She was responsible for bringing prominent entertainment properties to those companies including Disney, Nickelodeon, Hello Kitty, the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA), National Hockey League (NHL), and other top brands and intellectual properties. 

Universal Partnerships and Licensing Expands 

Universal Partnerships and Licensing (UP&L) expands its global focus to include consumer products for the NBC networks and Sprout. The expansion aims to maximize opportunities for consumer products and licensing efforts to benefit all of Universal’s film and TV properties. UP&L is now responsible for consumer product opportunities and licensing for shows such as The Biggest Loser and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Universal will also leverage its strength in the children’s business by working with Illumination Entertainment to grow Sprout’s consumer products. 

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Merchandising Lineup Is Unveiled

Nickelodeon's merchandising lineup for the new Paramount Pictures movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, will be available this summer and throughout the holiday season. Target will be the official destination for all things Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT). Toys and video games will be from Playmates Toys, Lego, and Activision Publishing Inc. Costumes, apparel, and accessories will be provided by ACI, Accutime, Bentex, Berkshire, Bioworld, Crocs, FGX International, Freeze, Handcraft, Hanover, H.E.R. Accessories, High Point, Isaac Morris, LF USA, MZ Bergerm Nouveau, Pan Oceanic, PS Brands, Richard Leeds, and Rubie’s Costume Co. Home décor will be from Accessory Innovations, Global Designs Concepts, Loungefly, and Thermos and Zak Designs. Insight Editions and Paramount Home Entertainment will provide publishing and home entertainment. 

Activision Licensing Program Strengthens Skylanders Franchise

Activision Publishing Inc. has new products for its toys-to-life video game franchise, Skylanders. A line of fruit snacks and cereals in partnership with General Mills is being created, a Skylanders magazine is in production with Immediate Media, a comic book series is scheduled to be released with IDW, and Crayola will release Skylanders-themed coloring books. Activision will also expand its publishing portfolio with Penguin Group. 

DHX Media Appoints Global Brand Master

Jazwares has been named global master toy partner on preschool property Ella the Elephant by DHX Media. The agreement will expand the brand’s reach in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Latin America, the Middle East, Australia, Spain, and Norway. The deal allows Jazwares to globally launch a plush line, doll figures and play sets, vehicles, role-play, and musical instruments based on the animated Disney Channel series. 

Paramount Animation Teams Up with Spin Master

Paramount Licensing will release consumer products for the upcoming Monster Trucks movie, in collaboration with Spin Master Ltd. This is the first licensee partnership for the Monster Trucks film, and will feature an extensive line of vehicle-based products. The movie is set for release next spring. 

Barbie Expands Global Footprint

Mattel will release an apparel line for the Barbie brand. Juniors’ and girls’ apparel and accessories will be sold at retail locations Forever 21, Uniqlo Co., Primark, and Lord & Taylor. 

New Toy Licensee for Popples

Saban Brands has a new licensing partnership in place with Spin Master Ltd. for its Popples brand. Set to launch next year, the line will include small dolls, collectible figures, play sets, and plush dolls. Popples is a series based on nostalgic characters from the popular 1980s toy line and television series. 

Spin Master Heads to Summer Camp

Spin Master Ltd. has a marketing partnership with Youth Venture Marketing and the American Camp Association. Spin Master’s products will be integrated into more than 135 camp programs across the U.S., which ship out in June. The program will run through August, and will give campers a chance to interact with top Spin Master brands, including DigiBirds, Ionix, Kinetic Sand, Meccano, Sew Cool, and Wackytivities. Spin Master plans to integrate construction toys and activity-based play into regular camp activities, thereby supporting educational development.

Joester Loria Group to Expand Apparel Program

Amy Coe has tapped The Joester Loria Group (TJLG) to bring the brand into wider distribution and new product categories. TJLG will expand the children’s apparel, accessories, bedding, and décor lines, and will produce Amy Coe Home for adult bedding and home goods. The partnership includes a six-year deal with Target, and a seven-year deal with Babies “R” Us.

Condé Nast and FremantleMedia Reach Licensing Deal

Condé Nast and FremantleMedia North America have reached a licensing deal to produce a full collection of Self-branded performance bedding, bath, and personal care items with London Luxury. The line will focus on products for the home and gym. 

iDoo-B-Doo Hits Homes

iDoo-B-Doo is now a regular feature in the Kid’s Corner of The Village Directory. This two-page spread will feature quizzes, crosswords, games, and reading practice with imaginative illustrations. Licensing focus will be placed on greeting cards, publishing, home ware, stationery, and apparel. 

FAM Brands Signs Cameo for Bally Total Fitness Brand

FAM BallyFAM Brands plans to explore additional distribution channels for the Bally Total Fitness brand. FAM acquired Bally Total Fitness last January, and under the original licensing agreement, FAM Brands had been manufacturing and marketing a comprehensive women’s activewear collection, including tops, sports bras, bottoms, and hoodies in sporting goods retailers, department stores, and specialty retailers. FAM has also launched a fitness accessory collection.
Cameo is one of the first licensees to sign on for Bally Total Fitness. The company will debut its soft launch of socks for the holiday season, and its full spring and summer rollout will arrive at retail stores by March.
FAM will continue to grow its roster of companies and license the brand.

The Joester Loria Group to Extend Jockey International Brand

Jockey International Inc. has chosen The Joester Loria Group to identify and secure licensees in the swimwear and home categories in the U.S. market. Jockey is active in more than 140 countries, marketing underwear, sock, thermals, sleepwear, activewear, sportswear and lounge wear, in men’s, women’s and children’s ranges.

DreamWorks Animation, Land of Nod Collaborate for Little Golden Books Program

The Land of Nod has partnered with DreamWorks Animation for a comprehensive program featuring characters from the children’s property Little Golden Books. Through this partnership, The Land of Nod will bring classic Little Golden Books The Shy Little Kitten and Tawny Scrawny Lion to life with bedding, wall art, rugs, and bath items.

ITV Studios Brings Thunderbirds Are Go! to International Stage

ThunderbirdsITV Studios Global Entertainment unveiled global opportunities for the TV property, Thunderbirds Are Go!, at this year’s Licensing Expo. A master toy licensee with worldwide rights (excluding the U.S. and Asia) is on board, and new partners will be announced. An extensive consumer marketing campaign, which includes retail promotions, digital initiatives, new product partnerships, events, and live shows, will support the international rollout of the property. 

SpongeBob SquarePants Chosen as Macy’s Holiday Ambassador

Macy’s Parade & Entertainment Group and Nickelodeon have announced that SpongeBob SquarePants will serve as Macy’s Holiday Ambassador this year. An exclusive SpongeBob talking plush complete with sound chip and Patrick and Plankton finger puppets will be available in more than 600 Macy’s Stores and through December 31. In addition, the SpongeBob SquarePants balloon will make its 11th return to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this November in New York City. 


Studio 100 Media Inks Deal for Maya and the Bee and Florrie’s Dragons

Studio 100Studio 100 Media GmbH has sold two of its key animation shows, Maya the Bee and Florrie’s Dragons, to ITI Neovisions S.A. in Poland for its kids Pay TV Channel MiniMini+. The agreement encompasses exclusive Pay TV rights for a three-year period starting this fall. 

Mind Candy Launches World of Warriors 

Mind Candy has launched a new franchise called World of Warriors, based on a battle strategy game for iOS and Android devices. The game will feature historical warriors that need to fight to survive.
Trading cards, publishing, toys, apparel, and accessories are scheduled for release throughout next year after the launch of the game, and Mind Candy will announce key global partnerships in the coming weeks. 

Sooty Movie Announced for 2016

Sooty MovieRedan Alchemy have announced that a Sooty Movie is in development, to be filmed next year, for release in 2016.
Owner and presenter Richard Caddel is currently working on the big screen adventure for the bear and his canine friend Sweep, in which they seek to rescue their panda friend Soo, and commented:
“She has been kidnapped by an evil showbiz impresario who will pull every trick in the book to turn her into a global superstar and Sooty and Sweep need her back.” Cadell was handed control of the puppet in 1998 from Matthew Corbett, the son of Sooty's creator, Harry Corbett. 
“The film will be peppered with spectacular locations, countless celebrity cameos and buckets of slapstick – without detracting from the charm of the nation’s favourite teddy bear, Sooty and his dim-witted best friend Sweep.”

The Entertainer Wins Family Business of the Year Award

The EntertainerThe Entertainer has won the Red Ribbon family Business of the Year. The Entertainer has also recently been awarded Zolfo Cooper Growth Retailer of the Year 2014 Award. The website has been awarded ‘’ Best Online retailer’’ by the toy industry awards for the last two years running and The Entertainer has previously been awarded Toy Retailer 2012.
The company’s awards success comes after it announced record-breaking results and major plans for expansion.
The Entertainer has posted strong annual results for 2013/14.  The independent toy retailer, which has 89 stores across the UK, has experienced its fifth year of top line and LFL growth and reached a pre-tax profit of £5.96million, an increase of 16% from 2012/13’s £5.1 million pre-tax profit.

The Lego Movie Highest Grossing Movie of 2014 So Far

The Lego Movie is currently the highest-grossing domestic box office release of the year — though Captain America: The Winter Soldier came as a close second.
The superhero blockbuster has earned only $6,038 less than the toy franchise’s first animated movie — according to industry analysts at Rentrak, Deadline reports. But both may end up getting beaten by Transformers: Age of Extinction, the fourth film in the Transformer series, which is released this Friday.

UK Businesses Need to Further Social Media Strategy

A fifth of businesses are yet to develop a social media strategy, according to new research, which suggests that a fifth of businesses in the UK are yet to develop a social media strategy, with only a third actively using it as a medium to promote their products or brand. A further third of businesses have made initial attempts to utilise social media before giving up on the process.
According to a new report released this month by a catalogue and direct marketing specialist, 20% of UK businesses are yet to put a social media strategy in place, with only 31% actively using social media as a marketing platform. Comparative statistics from a similar report last year, suggested that 67% of businesses used social as a marketing tool, implying that the use of social media has dropped by a third in the space of 12 months.
The report, put together by Catalogues 4 Business (C4B), questioned more than 300 UK organisations as part of research into corporate marketing strategies. Respondents to the study were drawn from a diverse mix of businesses, both B2B and B2C, which spanned multiple industry sectors.
According to the findings, social media (31%) is widely used by companies as part of their marketing approach. However when compared to a C4B study from 2013, there has been a 36% drop in usage, suggesting that many businesses attempt to adopt social media.

Egmont Signs with Temple Run

Egmont Publishing has signed a deal with Imangi Studios for global publishing rights to a fiction series and activity books based on Imangi’s mobile game series, Temple Run. Lisle International Licensing negotiated the deal on behalf of Imangi Studios.
Egmont UK, Egmont USA and Hardie Grant Egmont (Australia) will simultaneously launch a publishing program this autumn, following the continued increase in downloads of Temple Run 2. 
Publishing will kick off in all three territories this August, with the first two titles in a brand-new fiction series, Run for Your Life! The UK and US will also publish an activity title in August and the UK will publish two more titles in the fiction series in November, which the US and Australia will release in early 2015. 

Poeticgem Picks Up Despicable Me Franchise for Nightwear Range 

Despicable Me 2Poeticgem has signed a deal that will see the company produce a nightwear range based on the hugely successful Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment Despicable Me franchise.
The first film in the franchise hit screens in 2010. In 2013, Despicable Me 2 became the third highest-grossing film at the worldwide box office and grossed more than $970.8 million globally.  It is Universal’s highest-grossing, first-run film in the studio’s 102-year history, and the phenomenal franchise will continue with July 2015’s Minions and June 2017’s Despicable Me 3.
Poeticgem will be using the film series’ imagery and characters to produce an imaginative nightwear range for adults. 

Nordtex Extends Hello Kitty Range

Hello KittyRIO Licensing agency, the official representative of Hello Kitty brand in Russia, announced a deal between Nordtex company and Sanrio.
The two-year agreement signed in January 2014 includes household goods and home textiles categories. The agreement is a result of cooperation of Nordtex and Hello Kitty property.
Nordtex has been working with Hello Kitty property since July 2012. The company is steadily increasing its Hello Kitty assortment, as the sales of Hello Kitty products remain constantly high. Hello Kitty is so far the 3rd best-selling brand in the company’s portfolio.

Studio 100 Sells Two Shows into Poland

Studio 100Studio 100 has sold two of its key animation shows to Poland.
ITI Neovision in Poland has acquired 78 x 12’ episodes of the CGI series Maya The Bee and 52 x 10’ episodes of the pre-school series Florrie’s Dragons for its kids Pay TV Channel MiniMini+. The agreement encompasses exclusive Pay TV rights for a three-year period commencing Autumn 2014.
Produced by Studio 100 Animation SAS in association with TF1 and ZDF, the Maya The Bee CGI series is a modern rejuvenation of the classic brand, which sees Maya break free of the hive to seek adventure in the big wide world with her friends.

Peg + Cat Wins Three Awards

Peg + CatPeg + Cat, the new animated PBS KIDS math series from The Fred Rogers Company on PBS KIDS, earned a trio of top awards, including “Outstanding Pre-School Children’s Animated Program” at the 41st Annual Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which took place Friday night, June 20, in Los Angeles. The popular program also was honored with Emmys for “Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program” and “Outstanding Individual Achievement in Production Design.”
Co-created and executive produced by Jennifer Oxley (Little Bill, The Wonder Pets!) and Billy Aronson (Rent, Postcards from Buster), Peg + Cat is produced by The Fred Rogers Company for PBS KIDS. Kevin Morrison of The Fred Rogers Company and Vince Commisso of production partner 9 Story Entertainment also serve as executive producers. 9 Story distributes the series internationally.

Vishnu Athreya Named VP, Program Scheduling for Cartoon Network

Vishnu Athreya Vishnu Athreya has been named Vice President, Program Scheduling for Cartoon Network and Boomerang, it was announced by Rob Sorcher, Chief Content Officer for Cartoon Network in the US.
In this position, Athreya will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day scheduling and strategic positioning of programming content for Cartoon Network, Boomerang and branded non-linear program platforms.
He will serve as departmental lead for long-range calendar planning along with developing creative strategies for on-air stunts and special events surrounding the networks’ growing library of original, acquired and classic animated programming. Athreya will be based in Atlanta and report directly to Sorcher, who is based at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, California.
