Licensing Expo 2015 Reports Increase in Retail and Expanded International Profile

Licensing Expo saw its most successful show earlier this month, drawing 16,150 attendees during the three-day event—a 3 percent increase from last year’s event.
This figure includes a 6.6 percent uptick in international attendance with one in three attendees coming from outside the U.S. The countries with the greatest number of attendees were Canada, Japan, Mexico, and the UK, with significant increases from Australia (up 31 percent), Brazil (up 30 percent), and China (up 12 percent).
The show, sponsored by the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA), featured 460 exhibiting companies in 232,000 square feet, an increase of 6.5 percent from last year. More retailers attended than ever before, up 15 percent. The Expo concluded with more than 70 percent of this year's floor space re-booked for next year.
Press attendance at the Expo increased by 27 percent, with 152 journalists in attendance covering exhibitor news and events live from the show floor.
Licensing Expo 2016 will take place June 21 to 23 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

GBI Appoints License 2 Play to Expand From Frank Brand

Genius Brands International Inc. (GBI) and its wholly owned subsidiary A Squared Entertainment have finalized a licensing agreement with License 2 Play for the development of plush toys for the From Frank character brand.
License 2 Play will develop a broad range of plush consumer products based on the From Frank images and witticisms. The products will be available this holiday season through a variety of national stores and online retailers.
From Frank began as a line of witty greeting cards and has grown to become its own humor character brand supported by a range of new products to be introduced in this year. Additional licensees include master gift categories (Enesco); book and wall calendars (Chronicle Books); lottery tickets (GTech); sticky notes, boxed cards, and notepads (Galison/Mudpuppy); emoticons and a photo bomb app (Bare Tree Media); a wall calendar and 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzles (Calendar Club); and pins, stickers, air fresheners, and magnets (Hot Properties). GBI is in the process of partnering for pet products, stationery, party supplies, apparel, accessories, novelty, and more.

Disney to Unveil New Products to Fans at D23 Expo

Disney Consumer Products will unveil unique product experiences and exclusive merchandise at this year’s D23 EXPO, Disney’s ultimate fan event, to be held at the Anaheim Convention Center August 14 through 16. Reflecting a “tradition meets innovation theme,” Disney Consumer Products will provide interactive opportunities for fans of all ages to explore exciting stories, engaging experiences, and products to celebrate their favorite Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars stories.
Throughout the weekend, Disney Consumer Products will give fans the chance to get hands-on with the very latest in product innovations, explore fashion trends, books, apps, and more, and shop for collectible Disney Store merchandise. Special artist signings and stage presentations will also take place over the three-day event, offering fans the chance to get up close and personal with their favorite storytellers.

Imports Dragon to Develop NHL and NHLPA Collectibles

Imports Dragon has secured the worldwide rights to develop a National Hockey League (NHL) collectibles figures line.
The new line will include 3-inch figures, 6-inch classic figures, and 10-inch deluxe figures of select NHL players. The series is set to launch this fall.

Titan Merchandise Launches Cartoon Network Titans

Titan Merchandise, in partnership with Cartoon Network, will launch its line of Cartoon Network Titans: The Cartoon Network Collection this December.
Fans can now collect 3-inch, blind-boxed, vinyl figure versions of their favorite characters from classic and contemporary series, including Dexter’s Lab, Johnny Bravo, Adventure Time, and Uncle Grandpa. Each figure comes with a specific accessory, and there are four hidden Chase figures for kids to hunt and collect.

Vandor Appoints Lynn Keller as Licensing Director

Vandor LLC has appointed Lynn Keller as its new licensing director. Keller is a 15-year veteran at Vandor and has worked in several sales and operations positions at the company, most recently as director of key accounts sales.
As licensing director, Keller is responsible for Vandor’s comprehensive portfolio of licenses and its strategic licensing roadmap. She will also manage relationships with the company’s valued licensor partners.
Keller’s previous retail experience included both in-store and buying positions at Macy’s and Lord & Taylor. She reports to Vandor’s CEO Tom Russo in her new position.

Jay Companies Launches Tracy Porter Poetic Wanderlust Collection

Jay Companies will launch Tracy Porter Poetic Wanderlust glassware, giftware, and candles at the upcoming Atlanta International Gift and Home Furnishings Market July 7 to 14. The partnership was brokered by Jewel Branding & Licensing.
The initial collection includes glass plates, platters, trinket dishes coasters, and trays, all featuring richly exuberant patterns and colors, accented in gold and silver; oversized goblets featuring geometric designs in gold, silver, and layers of color, monogrammed and inscribed with inspirational observations; patterned poly trays in rectangular and round shapes, with solid color frames; and candles accented with gold and silver patterns available in three fragrance collections, including Soulful Spice, Serene Voyage, and In Bloom.
Tracy Porter designs can be found at major retailers across the U.S., including Neiman Marcus, Horchow, Nordstrom, Bed Bath & Beyond,, Belk, Dillard’s, and more.

Heidi Schwartz Joins Universal Branding & Media

Universal Branding & Media, a full-service licensing agency, has added licensing industry veteran Heidi Schwartz to its team of executives.
As Universal continues to expand its licensing portfolio, Schwartz will play an integral role in bringing brands and manufacturers together. Schwartz will utilize her more than 20 years of experience to increase Universal’s footprint in the licensing industry.
Schwartz joins Universal Branding & Media from both the licensor and licensee sides of the industry across all categories from sports to toy and entertainment licensing. Her experience covers licensing and marketing functions, as well as product marketing, brand development, strategic alliances, retail distribution, and new business development.

Sea World to launch Nickelodeon Land late-2015

Sea World has announced a new multi-million dollar kids and family area to be themed around some of the world’s best known and most loved Nickelodeon characters.
Opening late-2015, Nickelodeon Land will include four new kid-friendly rides and feature Sea World’s first ever mini rollercoaster, set to draw a new generation of thrill-seekers to the park.
The new attraction will be an extension of Nickelodeon’s existing partnership with Sea World, which includes a Dora Live Show, Nickelodeon character appearances and a Nickelodeon retail store. It will be Village Roadshow Theme Parks’ (VRTP) third major investment into children’s attractions in the last 12 months following on from Junior Driving School at Warner Bros. Movie World and Wet’n’Wild Junior at Wet’n’Wild Gold Coast.
Additionally, it will be Nickelodeon’s second major VRTP launch in the last two years, which includes the launch of Nickelodeon Beach at Wet’n’Wild Sydney.


Iconicfuture Adds to Its Management Team

Clemens von Berger has been appointed CEO at Iconicfuture. In addition to his core competencies strategy, corporate development and M&A, he will now be responsible for Iconicfuture’s global operations as well. Together with CFO Christian Weddigen he will continue to drive the company’s success.
As a lawyer by education, von Berger has over 20 years of experience in entrepreneurship, private equity as well as building up, optimizing and structuring growth companies of different sizes in various industries.
“We are very confident that Clemens von Berger will substantially add complementary value and will help to execute our plans moving forward in building a game changing business,” Iconicfuture’s Co-Founder and Chairman Thomas Martens comments.
Another addition to the team is Christopher Bergstresser as new Executive Vice President. He will focus on sales activities, both in the games and licensing industry, as well as on overall business development and strategy.
Bergstresser brings along years of experience from the games industry, having worked in an executive position for key players such as Miniclip, Atari, Konami and Sega.

Rubie’s to Launch Sendokai Champions Costumes

Nottingham Forest has signed a Licensing agreement with Rubie’s, for the animated TV series Sendokai Champions. Rubie’s will develop Sendokai Champions costumes that will be launched in Spain in late 2015, for Christmas campaign 2015 and Carnival campaign 2016.
Rubie’s supports Sendokai Champions with the launch of the Zak's costume later this year, the leader of the Senkun team. This Christmas, children will be able to feel part of the story and become one of their favorite characters.
Zak, together with his friends Cloe, Kiet and Fenzy will have to save the Earth from the evil Zorn Empire; with the help of their master Tänpo, they will must learn and train the art of Sendokai combat, win two Great Tournaments and thus preserving peace on Earth. More than 3.6 million kids follow up their adventures in Spain, making Sendokai Champions be the leading action series on Clan in 2014.

Industry Members to Take Part in Miffy and Friends Cycle Challenge

Warren Traeger, Licensing Director at Icon Live, will undertake the Miffy & Friends cycle challenge, a 4 day cycle from London to Utrecht in Holland.
Warren comments: “A long standing desire to raise money for a good cause, as well as a waistline that could not cope with expanding any further, led me to set myself this seriously ambitious challenge! 
“For most people with a degree of fitness, the thought of cycling 300 miles over 4 days is daunting and for me, until getting on a road bike for the first time in my life 12 weeks ago, it was almost unthinkable. Bullseye App Hits the Mark

Bulldog Licensing, agent for darts gameshow Bullseye, has announced the launch of a brand new Bullseye app on iOS and Android.
The app, developed by Island Wall Entertainment, went live on iOS/iTunes in mid- May and Android/Google Play a week later and has been an immediate hit, securing and sustaining a top five placing on both iPhone and iPad from the day of its launch and gaining a 3.7 star rating on Google Play.
For well over a decade Bullseye’s mixture of darts and general knowledge questions was a huge hit with UK audiences. The show featured not just amateur darts players battling it out for a selection of prizes, but some of the biggest names in professional darts throwing for charity. Bullseye ran over the entire ITV network from 1981 to 1995 and regularly pulled in 13 million viewers per episode, with a peak audience of 19.8 million on Boxing Day 1989. ITV has since featured the show in two high-rating one-off specials. Popular demand led to Bullseye reappearing as a series in 2006 on the Sky owned digital television channel Challenge where it is now broadcast regularly and has secured some of the game show channel’s highest ratings.
With the Bullseye licensing campaign, launched in 2013, Bulldog is looking to capitalise on the show’s huge retro appeal and enduring popularity. The licensing programme will target a number of categories including apparel, boardgames and gifting. The official Bullseye page of Facebook, which has over 60,000 fans, will be used to help promote product.

Roy Lowe, MV, and Goliath Games Sign on for Shopkins

Bulldog Licensing has signed deals with Roy Lowe and Sons, MV Sports & Leisure Ltd., and Goliath Games for its Shopkins brand.
Roy Lowe will produce socks; MV will develop wheeled goods, including bikes and scooters; and Goliath Games will create boardgames to be sold in the U.S. and distributed in the UK by John Adams Leisure Ltd.
Additional licensees include Spearmark for a line of lunchware, tableware, drinkware and lighting; Topps for collectible trading cards and sticker products; VMC for headwear, scarves, and sunglasses; Aykroyds for nightwear and underwear; Autumn Publishing for books; Character World for bedding, inflatable chairs, and beanbags; RMS International for arts and crafts products; Pedigree for annuals; DJ Murphy for magazines; Winning Moves for games; Pyramid for posters; and Whitehouse Leisure for amusement plush.


LIMA Partners with Promarca to Form LIMA Mexico   

The International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA), the primary trade group for the worldwide licensing business, will join forces with Promarca in Mexico to extend LIMA’s reach into the Latin American market with the formation of LIMA Mexico. The new arm of the organization will operate under a license from LIMA, utilizing the trade association’s trademark and related intellectual property.
Under the new agreement, Promarca affiliates will become LIMA Mexico members with full LIMA benefits. With the opening of LIMA Mexico, the association will have seven international offices, including New York, London, Munich, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Melbourne.
A managing director of LIMA Mexico will be named soon.
