The Angry Birds Movie Tops Box Office

The Angry Birds Movie took the top position at the U.S. box office this weekend, earning $39 million and beating Captain America: Civil War for the top spot, according to Box Office Mojo and comScore.

The film, produced by Rovio and Sony Pictures is an adaptation of the mobile games, featuring the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Sean Penn, Maya Rudolph, Danny McBride, and Josh Gad.

In additional Angry Birds News, Brunswick Bowling and Rovio Entertainment will partner to bring Angry Birds to the lanes.
Angry Birds Bowling is the latest addition to Brunswick Bowling’s Sync Scoring and Management System. Based on the classic 2D character animations from the mobile game franchise, Angry Birds Bowling features the same frustrated birds and persistent pigs currently starring in The Angry Birds Movie in theaters nationwide now. During game play, pin action will cause the pigs’ structures to collapse.
Brunswick will roll out a marketing campaign this month designed to drive traffic to Sync Scoring centers equipped with Angry Birds Bowling. The campaign will include in-theater advertising, as well as digital and social media elements.
Angry Birds Bowling will debut and be available for demos at the International Bowl Expo, the bowling industry's biggest trade show, in Las Vegas June 29 to 30.

The Lego Group Opens London Flagship Store in Leicester Square

The Lego Group will launch a London Flagship Store in Leicester Square, the heart of London’s “theatreland.” Construction on the store, which is set to open to the public late this year, has started. The store will be developed as a family/tourist destination for Lego fans.
The new flagship store marks Lego’s 37th store in Europe. Lego also recently unveiled a store in Paris, France, and its Asian flagship store in Shanghai, China. The store will cover 5,420 square feet over two floors in the Swiss Court redevelopment on Leicester Square.
The Lego Group will also launch its latest edition to the Creator Expert theme, a scale copy of Big Ben and the parliament buildings. The completed Lego build will stand more than 60 cm high, and feature a detailed façade with statues, shields, windows, and a clock tower with four adjustable clock dials. The tower will house Big Ben, which kids can access through a removable roof.
The set will be available online at and Lego stores in July.

SmileyWorld Pop-Up Store Opens in Beijing

SmileyWorld launched a pop-up store in one of China’s malls, Galeries Lafayette, in Beijing. The store opened with Liberation’s new SmileyWorld eyewear and accessories capsule collection.
The pop-up store features a modern space, neon lighting, mirrored displays, and Smiley products, including bags, cushions, hats, key rings, mugs, and plush.
In additional SmileyWorld news, the brand continues its expansion into the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market, building on a successful year championing Smiley’s “Taste Happiness” concept.
This week, some of SmileyWorld’s licensing partners are showcasing their collaborations at PLMA in Amsterdam. Rolland R+R introduces Smiley ice cream with a chocolate core cone, coated with tasty smilies on top. Witors offers milk chocolate eggs, Seven Days has Tasty Smiley cereal, and Zaini offers chocolate and hazelnut treats with Smiley surprises inside.

Cartamundi Announces Disney•Pixar Finding Dory Card Games

Cartamundi will launch three new games this month, including a Snap game, a two-in-one game, and a game box, inspired by Disney•Pixar’s Finding Dory.
The two in one game and the game box both include a Pairs and a Donkey game. The game box also includes a Finding Dory puzzle. The packaging and the cards for all three products are illustrated with pictures of Dory and many other characters from the new film. The game box offers a very appropriate extra—the cards are waterproof, making them perfect for playing at the beach or poolside.
Aimed at players ages 3 and up, the games come with easy-to-understand instructions. Cartamundi is also planning a promotional Finding Dory competition to coincide with the film’s release, offering cinema tickets for the whole family, as well as a set of Cartamundi Finding Dory card games.

Boat Rocker Brands Expands TV Property The Next Step

Boat Rocker Brands, the global marketing and merchandising arm of Boat Rocker Media, will expand its TV property The Next Step across its retail, merchandise, and touring productions.  
The Next Step: Wild Rhythm Tour live show sold out in Canada and the UK for the spring, and with new dates added in the UK for October. Matinee shows were added in Manchester, London, Birmingham, Brighton, and Portsmouth. The show recently announced new dates in Ireland and Australia/New Zealand, with more dates to be added shortly.
Brands with Influence Worldwide, BRB’s international brand licensing agency, has partnered with Igloo Books for a series of The Next Step sticker and activity books, as well as a range of lifestyle and fashion apparel from TVM FashionLab for supermarket Sainsbury’s in the UK. Another clothing line, supplied by Limelight Dancewear, is also available at in Canada, brokered by BRB’s Canadian agent Segal Licensing.
The Next Step also launched the Zero Percent Club to encourage dialogue about stress, fear, and anxiety that affects tweens and teens. The store will launch Zero Percent Club bracelets and add new products over the next few months.

More Than 50 Buying Professionals Take Part in BLE’s Retail Mentoring Program

More than 50 buying professionals will take part in Brand Licensing Europe (BLE)’s Retail Mentoring Program, including Marks & Spencer, Halfords, and The Entertainer.

Organized by UBM and sponsored by the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA), the program gives buying and merchandising professionals a deeper understanding of the licensing industry.
Delegates will attend workshops, seminars, the LIMA Licensing Essentials Course, the Spring Fling event, and shadow licensors in their workplace. Delegates also get the opportunity to formally judge products for the Licensing Industry Awards.

Now in its 18th year, BLE 2016 will feature more than 300 exhibitors showcasing more than 2,500 brands, characters, and images. A free educational program will run alongside the event offering advice and sector-specific sessions, workshops, panel discussions, the event, and keynotes from industry trailblazers.

Viz Media to Develop Animated Kids’ Series Gakkimals

Viz Media LLC acquired the production and licensing rights to develop an original animated series based on the animated Japanese kids’ property Gakkimals.
The series will be produced under license from ShoPro, a subsidiary of three of Japan’s largest publishing houses, Shogakukan Inc., Shueisha Inc., and Hakusensha Inc., which focuses on licensing and merchandising the properties owned by Shogakukan Inc.
Gakkimals is an adventure where mash-ups of musical instruments and animals bring happiness and harmony to a fun-filled world.

Harris-Sachs LLC Brokers Hasbro My Little Pony Deal for Pamson Pacific

Hasbro’s My Little Pony and Pamson Pacific Enterprises Corp Ltd. entered a licensing partnership through a deal brokered by Harris-Sachs, LLC.
The deal allows Pamson Pacific's to create a spring/summer line of toys, including bubbles, chalk toys, jump ropes, and other seasonal items for kids.

Frida Kahlo Corp. Signs Agency Agreement with One Entertainment

The Frida Kahlo Corp. appointed Las Vegas-based One Entertainment as its licensing agent in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. 
Since her early death in 1954 at 47 years old, Kahlo's reputation as an artist has grown far beyond her native Mexico. Her work has been embraced for its feminist and indigenous elements, a legacy that continues to grow.
One Entertainment will work with select manufacturers and retailers in key categories, such as apparel and stationery, which will be available in the U.S. next spring.

4 World Boxing Council and Learfield Licensing Partners Enter Exclusive Partnership

The World Boxing Council (WBC) and Learfield Licensing Partners have signed an exclusive agreement naming Learfield Licensing as the WBC’s global representative across all categories for licensing and merchandising.
The WBC has hired Learfield Licensing to maximize exposure opportunities globally, while helping secure strong partnerships for WBC-licensed products across various categories and retail channels. Learfield Licensing will leverage its relationships with retailers and manufacturers in the pursuit of new opportunities for the WBC.
Learfield will showcase the WBC as a lifestyle brand that features performance apparel and authentic training products that target fitness enthusiasts and the growing audience who view boxing as the ultimate workout program. Learfield Licensing’s legal team will work alongside the WBC to strengthen and protect the WBC brand in markets throughout the world.

Garfield Gets Animated

Alcon Entertainment has secured exclusive rights to produce animated theatrical motion pictures based on the iconic comic strip Garfield.
Alcon acquired the rights from the creator of the Garfield comic series and brand, Jim Davis, who will also serve as an executive producer. Alcon’s goal is to build a franchise of fully animated Garfield feature films.

King Features Partners for Popeye Apparel Range

King Features UK licensee TSPTR has sold high end men’s Popeye clothing for two seasons into stores such as Liberty, while Eastman Leather offers replica World War II flying jackets.
Developed by Bradley Kelly of the King Features Syndicate, the jacket shown depicts Popeye astride a P2V Neptune bomber with missile in left hand and .50Cal machine gun in the other, blazing away.
In collaboration with clothing brand TSPTR, this is an officially licensed product from King Features Syndicate. The official Popeye patch design is taken exactly from the original and is made on the correct military quality looms to produce a high-quality reproduction.

Richard Scrivener to Join Bright Agency as Non-Executive Director

Richard Scrivener of the Creative Rights Agency will join the board of the Bright Agency as a non-executive director with a special responsibility to develop the company’s portfolio of film, TV, and merchandising rights.
Scrivener is acknowledged as an industry-leading expert in the publishing media sector, having worked at Penguin for 10 years, where he initiated many successful film/tie-in programs. He subsequently worked as Scholastic’s UK publisher, where he oversaw the re-launch of Horrible Histories, and Templar Publishing as commercial director, where he managed the Ology licensing program and concluded four movie option deals with different Hollywood studios, prior to the company’s sale to Bonnier.

4K Media Expands International Streaming Media Partnerships for Yu-Gi-Oh!

4K Media Inc. and its distribution partner Cinedigm adds to its global partnerships with a number of Subscription Video on Demand (SVoD)/ Video on Demand (VoD) partners in Europe, including Germany, Italy, and multi-territory agreements. 
236 German-language episodes of the complete series Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters and 155 German-language episodes of the complete series Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, in cooperation with the German distribution partner KSM GmbH, have been licensed to RTL networks’ German online portal ClipFish, Maxdome, the SVoD platform owned by Prosieben Sat 1. Media, and My Video.
TIM will offer its TIMvision’s subscribers all 49 episodes of the first season of  Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V Season 1.
Crunchyroll has expanded its worldwide distribution arrangement with the addition of the original, uncut Japanese-language versions of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX series with English subtitles.
4K Media joins Hollywood studios in partnering with Tubi TV. The free VoD service has licensed 154 original and uncut episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D with English subtitles, as well as 123 English-language episodes of the series.

Boonie Bears from China Set to Revisit Vegas

 This June marks Fantawild Animation’s second appearance at the Licensing Expo, bringing the Boonie Bears to the expo for licensing. With its brand connotation of “Environment-friendly, Natural, Healthy, Happy”, Boonie Bears aims to spread these messages to all the family.

The Boonie Bears series has been distributed to over 100 countries and territories, including being broadcast on Disney and Sony. I have 8 years experience of working for a large London Publishing house licensing book content to third parties. I am looking for a role which utilises my skills in negotiation and relationship building and can develop my experience within the licensing field. Having licensed book content to a wide variety of customers from national Newspapers to international Publishers I would relish the experience to work in a new industry, licensing new content to new clients.
I realise that a move across from traditional publishing may mean a step down from the managerial role I was in before. I'm enthusiastic to work in a new industry and feel my skills are easily transferable and am happy to look outside licensing roles also.
