DHX and Iconix in Deal to Grow Strawberry Shortcake Brand

DHX Media and Iconix Brand Group have entered into a long-term agreement to co-develop and co-produce a new animated series based on the iconic entertainment toy brand, Strawberry Shortcake. The new content will be produced and globally distributed by DHX Media. Iconix will handle worldwide merchandising and licensing for the brand, with DHX’s international licensing agency, CPLG, holding first right of negotiation to represent the brand in certain territories. Iconix and DHX will both participate on all revenue streams related to this agreement
In an additional deal, DHX also becomes the exclusive, global distributor for the Strawberry Shortcake back catalogue, adding 108 half-hours to the 8 half-hours of Strawberry Shortcake content already in the DHX distribution library.
Under the terms of the deal, DHX and Iconix will jointly finance, co-develop, and co-produce at least 39 new half-hour episodes of Strawberry Shortcake, with the option for additional episodes. All episodes will be produced by DHX Studios, and DHX will be the exclusive worldwide distributor of this new content across all media, with the possibility to extend for additional seasons. Iconix will maintain ownership of copyrights and all intellectual property.

Rubie’s Partners for Yo-Kai Watch Costumes

Rubie’s Costume Co. partnered with Level-5 abby Inc. and Evolution USA to produce officially licensed costumes for Yo-Kai Watch.
The Yo-Kai Watch collection includes a one-piece, zip up hooded jumpsuit for Blazion, Whisper, Jibanyan, and Robonyan for Halloween or dress-up, and is available in child sizes.
The Yo-Kai Watch Costume Collection by Rubie’s Costume Co. will be available nationwide and worldwide this Halloween.

Shopkins Soars Up the Toy Sales Charts

Following recent news released by Moose and GP Flair about the continued success of the Shopkins toy brand, Bulldog Licensing, licensing agent for the property, has reported that the merchandising program is also gaining pace with success across the board within multiple sectors.   
The latest sales data from NPD reveals that red-hot girls’ brand, Shopkins, recorded the UK’s second highest toy sales figures in March – beaten only by Star Wars.
The toy range, distributed in the UK by GP Flair, not only included the phenomenally popular figures and playsets but also Cool Cardz, Shaker Makers, plush and stuffed toys and now boasts the UK’s third biggest toy sales (behind Star Wars and Lego Star Wars) for 2016 to date.
Licensing agent Bulldog Licensing has secured deals with major licensees such as Gemma (party goods), Fashion UK (apparel), Aykroyds TDP (nightwear and underwear), Spearmark (lunchware, tableware, drinkware and lighting), Topps (collectible and trading cards), VMC (headwear, scarves, sunglasses and more), Blueprint (stationery), Character World (bedding, inflatable chairs and beanbags), Danilo (greetings cards, wrap and calendars), DJ Murphy (magazines), Winning Moves (games), Icon Live (jewellery and hair accessories) and Whitehouse Leisure (amusement plush).

Rovio Entertainment Launches Licensing Program for The Angry Birds Movie

Rovio Entertainment launched The Angry Birds Movie licensing and merchandising program across multiple categories, including toys, games, electronics, sporting goods, costumes, apparel, accessories, and publishing.
Lego will offer a collection of building sets, such as the digitally integrated Angry Birds Action! game. Spin Master will develop collectible figures, play sets, and games. H&M will produce an exclusive line of kids’ apparel, and Amscan will make party supplies and kids’ costumes.
Rovio has also partnered with Alibaba Group for Angry Birds’ consumer product licensing and e-commerce in China, excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Alibaba will integrate its other platforms including Tmall, Tmall Magic Box, Youku Tudou, and UC Browser to launch a series of marketing activities from May 20 to June 19.
Licensees in North America include Commonwealth, World Tech Toys, CS Direct, and Hasbro for the toys and games category; KIDdesigns for electronics; Brunswick for sporting goods; Rubie’s for kid and adult costumes; and dozens more.

Discovery Communications Names Leigh Anne Brodsky EVP of Global Enterprises

Discovery Communications appointed Leigh Anne Brodsky as executive vice president, Discovery Global Enterprises. Brodsky will oversee consumer products, location-based entertainment, and program sales worldwide. 
Brodsky previously served as the managing director at Peanuts Worldwide and Iconix Entertainment, where she oversaw the company’s global business, establishing the largest retail presence for Peanuts in the brand’s 65-year history. 
She also served as president of Nickelodeon Consumer Products, overseeing parent company Viacom’s global licensing and merchandising business, including brands such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, Blue’s Clues, Comedy Central’s South Park, and MTV’s Jersey Shore. 
In 2011, Brodsky was inducted into the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association’s (LIMA) Hall of Fame. She is also a twice-elected member of the LIMA Board of Directors, where she serves on its charity fundraising committee. 

Sooty Teams Up with Brands With Influence

The Sooty Show’s licensing programme has grown over the past three years, with continued broadcast on CITV and core deals negotiated with Golden Bear, TVM Fashion Lab, Redan Publishing and Award Publications. 
Richard Cadell, owner/presenter of the Sooty show commented: “With The Sooty Show now broadcast in Australia and New Zealand and the movie in development, we felt it was time to step up the licensing programme and Brands with Influence are the perfect partner to help take this iconic brand forward. Redan Alchemy will continue to manage the brand, but we feel that it’s time for a specialist licensing company to get involved, especially when it comes to developing the retro/vintage sector and building links with larger retailers.”
Dom Wheeler and Martin Lowde from Brands With Influence commented on the new partnership saying “We jumped at the chance to represent the Sooty Show, as huge fans of old custard cheeks, we can’t wait to start working with Richard, Sooty, Sweep and Soo, to grow this iconic brand and expand the licensing programme into new and exciting areas.”

Toy Industry Execs to Open Licensing Expo

Leading toy industry executives will open Licensing Expo 2016 with keynote session “Toys to Content: Where Do We Go From Here?” on June 21, from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.
The panel includes Simon Waters, general manager and SVP, entertainment and consumer products, Hasbro; Laura Zebersky, CCO, Jazwares; and Susie Lecker, CBO, toy box division, Mattel Inc.
The International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA) senior vice president Marty Brochstein will moderate the keynote discussion, which is open to all registered Licensing Expo exhibitors and attendees. 
The keynote panel is part of LIMA’s lineup of Licensing University educational programs that begin on June 20 with the Digital Media Licensing Summit.

TLC Celebrates 20 Years, Teams up with Railway Children Association

For the occasion of its 20th anniversary TLC will be supporting the Railway Children Association, a pioneering international children's charity which helps street children around the world. Railway Children has already helped over 270 000 children these last 20 years.
TLC comments: “We have until October to raise the 50 000$ necessary to help 5000 children who live alone on the streets. To collect this amount, we have organised in May a Coca-Cola-themed raffle. Many prizes can be won, such as a Husky fridge (value: 302€); a Big Ben speaker (value: 179€); a bundle containing a back pack, an umbrella and a Carpisa wallet (value: 91€), and many others surprises for 8 randomly selected winners.”

One Entertainment Awarded Licensing Rights for IFLScience

One Entertainment was awarded licensing rights for online sensation I F*cking Love Science (IFLScience) in North, Central, and South America. Elise Andrew launched IFLScience as a Facebook blog in 2012.
The page has 50 million unique visitors monthly and 24.5 million fans on Facebook, and keeps followers up-to-date on science topics such as the wonders of the world and the solar system in an easy and fun way.
The licensing program will focus on apparel, stationery, gift and novelty, and toys. The first IFLScience products will hit retail next spring.

Galison Announces Stationery and Paper Gift Partnership with Christian Lacroix Paris

Galison Publishing, which is distributed by Abrams & Chronicle Books in the UK and Europe, announced a partnership with iconic fashion house Christian Lacroix Paris to distribute stationery and paper gift products.
Galison will partner with Lacroix’s design team in Paris and begin selling the autumn 2016 collection immediately. William Miller, President of Galison, said: “We are thrilled to be joined in the creative process and selling of Lacroix stationery. We will bring our expertise in sales and manufacturing to create even more unique Lacroix products.”
Nicolas Topiol, CEO Christian Lacroix, said “We are excited to partner with Galison to further develop and expand our stationery line of products. Galison’s expertise and commercial reach will provide us with the opportunity to continue to build on our worldwide distribution and successful collections.”
Gaslion products are already sold in Waterstones, Foyles, John Lewis and many other retailers while the Christian Lacroix Paris collection is stocked in department stores and luxury retailers including Harrods, Fortnum and Mason and Liberty.

GBI Expands Stone Newman’s Role to President of Global Consumer Products and Marketing

Genius Brands International (GBI) expanded Stone Newman’s role from president of global consumer products to president of global consumer products and marketing. Newman will now spearhead traditional and digital marketing efforts for all of the company’s brands.
Since joining the company in 2014, Newman has worked with retailers and licensees to build comprehensive licensing and merchandising programs for brands such as SpacePOP, Llama Llama, Baby Genius, Warren Buffett’s Secret Millionaires Club, Stan Lee’s Mighty 7 (SLAM 7), and Thomas Edison’s Secret Lab. Newman has also managed licensing programs under GBI’s wholly owned subsidiary, A Squared Entertainment LLC.
Previously, Newman worked at Art + Science International Inc., a boutique-licensing agency he founded. Newman is also an entrepreneur who helped build start-ups like Sababa Toys. He has also worked in marketing and licensing at Hasbro.

Jumbo Games Announces Star Trek Puzzle License

Jumbo Games has signed a deal with CBS, to produce a range of Star Trek jigsaw puzzles. The puzzles, launching in September 2016, will commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Star Treks, in a year of celebration. The puzzle range will include a 1000 and 500 piece puzzle for 2016.
Stewart Middleton, Managing Director at Jumbo Games said: “We are very excited to work with CBS and CPLG on this fantastic franchise, especially as Star Trek is celebrating 50 years – can you believe it! The puzzles will make brilliant collectable pieces, that we envisage being very popular with many new and long standing trekkies.”

Mattel Partners with Papercutz for Barbie Graphic Novels

Mattel partnered with graphic novel publisher Papercutz to create comics based on the company’s Barbie character.
Papercutz will create a range of graphic novels that complement the way kids interact with Barbie and reflect the diversity that Mattel has brought to the franchise.
The first three titles slated for launch as graphic novels are an eponymous Barbie series and individual volumes based on the Barbie Starlight and Barbie Puppy Adventure DVD films. Barbie and Barbie: Puppy Party will launch in September, with Barbie Starlight following in October. All three series will be available in paperback and hardcover.

More series will debut early next year, with new installments and new series appearing each season. Barbie Vol. 1 and Barbie: Puppy Party Vol. 1 will be on sale at comic book stores, online retailers, and book stores on September 13.

Little Cosmetics Announces Little Charmers License

Little Cosmetics has acquired the Little Charmers license for North America in the role play category.
The deal, brokered by Ken Harris of Harris-Sachs LLC, marks the first license acquisition for Little Cosmetics.
“We are excited for the opportunity to partner with Little Charmers to bring licensed pretend makeup to the preschool category,” said Starla Tyler, Founder and CEO of Little Cosmetics. Since its January 2015 launch, Little Charmers has become a preschool favorite and its popularity continues to grow.
Little Cosmetics’ Little Charmers line will include pretend makeup kits and accessories, and will be available this Fall.

Brandon Steiner Partners with Apple Corps Ltd. for Beatles Wall Art

Brandon Steiner, a producer of hand-signed collectibles in the U.S., partnered with The Beatle’s Apple Corps Ltd. to release a line of licensed Beatles Wall Art.
The Beatles Collection will consist of two framed presentations celebrating the band’s U.S. and UK albums, along with canvases representing group images and album covers. 
Steiner Sports will also commemorate upcoming Beatles anniversaries, such as the August 1966 release of the album Revolver, and create a collection in 2017 that celebrates the 50th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Steiner will market its products through Beatles’ vendors and its own website and will expand the brand into the company’s digital and brick-and-mortar distribution channels.

The Fred Rogers Co., 9 Story Media Group Appoint Imports Dragon as Global Master Toy Partner for Peg + Cat

The Fred Rogers Co. and 9 Story Media Group appointed Imports Dragon as the global master toy partner for Peg + Cat to create toys for preschoolers ages 3 to 5.
The toys will be based on the characters, math questions, and problem-solving concepts featured in the series. The line will include plush, arts and crafts sets, games, and wooden puzzles. The collection will start to roll out this fall.
Peg + Cat books from Candlewick Press will also launch across multiple formats. Peg + Cat DVDs will expand with PBS Distribution in the U.S., eOne in Canada, ABC Commercial in Australia, and Sony Music in Germany.

Threshold Global Studios to Develop Tetris The Movie

Producer Larry Kasanoff’s Threshold Entertainment Group and Bruno Wu’s Seven Star Works partnered to develop and finance films under the Threshold Global Studios banner. The inaugural project will be a film adaption of video game brand Tetris, with an $80 million budget.  
Threshold’s Jimmy Ienner will executive produce with The Tetris Co. and Seven Stars. Line Producer Dane Smith will be responsible for implementing Tetris VFX, developed especially for the film.

9 Story Media Group’s Preschool Series Top Wing Picked Up by Nickelodeon

9 Story Media Group’s CGI-animated action-adventure preschool series Top Wing will be distributed by Nickelodeon worldwide, excluding Canada. 
Top Wing follows a team of young birds as they flock together to help their community and earn their wings as full-feathered rescue birds. The series teaches preschoolers the importance of teamwork and successful problem solving.

Hasbro to Launch Yo-Kai Watch 2 in the U.S. on September 30

Yo-Kai Watch 2 will launch in the U.S. on September 30, exclusively on Nintendo 3DS. Developed by Level-5, the sequel offers role-playing video game and adventures like the first game.
Yo-Kai Watch 2 offers 350 new Yo-Kai, allowing players to explore outside Springdale, and even time travel. Two versions, Yo-Kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits and Yo-Kai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls, will launch.
Hasbro will add new items to its Yo-Kai Watch line this fall, including the Yo-Kai Watch Model Zero, designed to look like the watch worn by Nate in season two of the animated series. Hasbro will also release a new series of collectible Yo-Motion Yo-Kai Medals, compatible with the new watch, as well as custom accessories, large plush toys, and electronic figures.
Fans will also be able to collect and trade Yo-Kai Watch characters with the Yo-Kai Watch Trading Card Game. The second season of the Yo-Kai Watch animated TV series will premiere this summer on Disney-XD. Yo-Kai Watch season one is available on Netflix and the DVD will release later this year. The Yo-Kai Watch Wibble Wobble app is available on iTunes for playing with Yo-Kai characters on smart devices.
