The Pokémon Co. International appointed Wicked Cool Toys as master toy licensee for the Pokémon brand. Beginning July 2018, Wicked Cool Toys will have the rights to manufacture and market action figures, play sets, plush, role-play items, and other toys based on the animated series in worldwide markets, excluding regions in Asia where the brand is managed by The Pokémon Co. International’s parent organization, The Pokémon Co.
The Pokémon Co. International also become an investor in Wicked Cool Toys and will have a seat on the company’s board of directors. The investment in Wicked Cool Toys is similar to the partnership approach The Pokémon Co. International engaged in with Niantic Inc., the developers and publishers of Pokémon GO.
TOMY will continue to be a licensing partner for the Pokémon brand and will produce select items and products inspired by the brand’s video games.
The development of Pokémon toys from Wicked Cool Toys will begin immediately, with the first products expected to arrive at retail locations next fall.

New Agency La Panderia Announced

Televisa consumer products has announced a reorganization of its licensing and merchandising division leading the way to the creation of a new Licensing agency based out of Mexico. Maca Rotter, who has been at the forefront of the licensing business for over 16 years has founded La Panderia Licensing & Marketing. 
Maca Rotter, Jessica Juseppe and Alejandra Mier, will continue to lead a team of 30+ people dedicated to independently operate and manage the Televisa Consumer Products business without losing the strength of television, operating as a private entity but working alongside its partners and Grupo Televisa in various areas such as programming for the Channel 5 preschool slot and the promotion of trademarks and brands hand in hand with the acquisitions and Televisa’s programming team.
The independence will allow La Panderia to continue growing successfully as it has been over the last decade. "We will have the best of both worlds,” commented Maca Rotter. “We will operate as a independent corporation and, as such, will provide everyone with even faster service and attention.”
La Panaderia will continue to represent global studios such as Moose, Eone, Animaccord, Sesame Workshop, Anima Kitchent, TOEI Animation and of course, Televisa & Grupo Chespirito.

BBC Worldwide North America Adds New Hey Duggee Partners

BBC Worldwide North America added Children’s Apparel Network and Jay Franco to the Hey Duggee portfolio. BBC Worldwide North America’s deal with Children’s Apparel Network includes girls’ and boys’ apparel, swimwear, layettes, and outerwear, and the deal with Jay Franco includes bedding, bath goods, beach products, and storage products.
Hey Duggee currently airs on Nick Jr. in the U.S. and on Treehouse and BBC Kids in Canada. New episodes of the preschool series premiered this week on Nick Jr. Episodes from season one will continue to air regularly weekdays and on Saturdays.
BBC Worldwide North America recently announced Jazwares as master toy licensee for Hey Duggee in the U.S. and Canada in a deal that includes plush, play sets, figures, and vehicles.

DHX Media Acquires Entertainment Division of Iconix

DHX Media has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the entertainment division of Iconix Brand Group Inc. which includes both an 80% controlling interest in Peanuts and 100% of Strawberry Shortcake. The remaining 20% interest in Peanuts will continue to be held by members of the family of Charles M. Schulz.
The total purchase price for this acquisition is US$345 million, subject to a customary working capital adjustment, to be paid through a combination of cash on hand, new debt financing facility and a private placement offering of subscription receipts ultimately exchangeable for convertible debentures. The transaction is expected to close on or around June 30, 2017.

eOne Signs Partners for Peppa Pig Licensing Program in North America, Adds Global Partners for PJ Masks

Entertainment One (eOne) named additional partners and renewed more licensing agreements for Peppa Pig in the U.S. and Canada. The licensing program now includes more than 70 licensees.
eOne negotiated contract renewals with Candlewick for publishing (U.S.), DecoPac for cake-decorating (U.S. and Canada), Fiesta for amusement plush (U.S. and Canada), GBG Beauty for bath and personal care (U.S.), Penwizard for publishing (U.S.), Primary Colors for confectionery and stationery (U.S. and Canada), and Tin Box for tinware (U.S.). 
eOne also signed four new partners for Peppa Pig merchandise, including American Greetings (U.S. and Canada), Colgate for oral care (U.S.), Delta for home furnishings (U.S.), and Innovative Designs for stationery (U.S.).

Smiley Taps into the Festival Market

The Smiley Company has entered into collaboration with Pretty Green. This unique partnership will see a small range of apparel, which has been inspired by both brands deep roots in music and pays homage to the UK’s world famous music festival scene.
This partnership falls as part of a special program of collaborations that Smiley has planned to celebrate its 45th anniversary throughout 2017.
This limited edition collection will launch through selected Pretty Green distribution channels this May 2017, just in time for the festival season.

MGAE, Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt Partner for Num Noms Exclusive Packs in the U.S.

MGA Entertainment (MGAE) and Menchie’s, a self-serve frozen yogurt franchise, partnered for an exclusive promotion in the U.S. The new Num Noms collectibles line will launch a Menchie’s starter pack that features the Menchie’s Sweet Friends, available only at Toys “R” Us stores in the U.S. and online beginning this July.  
To kickoff the campaign, more than 400 Menchie’s stores in the U.S. will feature two exclusively designed, limited-edition frozen yogurt cups.
Num Noms first launched in the U.S. in 2015, and has since added to its collection with new series. The newest edition to the line—Num Noms Lights—includes more characters and combinations that will be available this summer.

Zuru Secures Worldwide License for Nimuno Loops

Zuru signed an exclusive, worldwide licensing agreement with Chrome Cherry Design Studios to manufacture and distribute Nimuno Loops, the original toy block tape. Nimuno Loops will be brought to market in collaboration with Zuru’s Mayka Tape construction brand.
Nimuno Loops transforms nearly any surfaces into a base for construction toy bricks and figures. One side features a bendable, flexible surface with a toy block pattern that is compatible with LEGO toys and other toy construction brands. The other side has a reusable, adhesive backing that allows kids to build on almost any object, around corners, and on curved surfaces to make 3D creations.
Zuru plans to begin shipping Nimuno Loops—which will be branded and marketed in conjunction with the Company’s Mayka Construction brand—this summer.

VIZ Media Europe Appoints Kazuyoshi Takeuchi as President

VIZ Media Europe has announced that Kazuyoshi Takeuchi, previously President at Shodensha Publishing Co., Ltd. in Tokyo, is appointed as the new President of VIZ Media Europe.
After five years in his function as President of VIZ Media Europe, Hyoe Narita has passed the torch on to Kazuyoshi Takeuchi. He was instrumental during the merger of the group that is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2017, while reinforcing its presence in Europe. Narita has worked on implementing the strategy that allowed VME to gain market shares by launching on the European market animation and
manga properties such as Yo-Kai Watch, Doraemon, One Piece, Dragon Ball and Beyblade. He will continue to provide services to the VME group as Executive Advisor.
Kazuyoshi Takeuchi has been appointed as his successor and will assume the role of President of VIZ Media Europe.

Going Counterculture for the Win

It’s an American thing to be attracted to individuals who swim against the cultural tide—artists, rebels, challengers of mainstream groupthink, real and virtual heroes who accomplish amazing feats against overwhelming odds. They are all the purveyors of unconventional viewpoints, lifestyles, and philosophies, forming subcultures within society. They also make significant impacts when their ideas and the brands that they champion are adopted by the mainstream.
We’ve seen stellar examples of this phenomenon. A small group of motorcycle racers made the Harley-Davidson brand a cultural icon when it was co-opted by originals and rebels, such as James Dean, Elvis, and Marlon Brando, a­mong a slew of other famous hog aficionados. Van’s, the sneaker of California skateboard fame, became a pop cult favorite after rockers, art students, and cool, fashion-forward kids began to adopt the brand. Jack Daniel’s, a small Tennessee whiskey brand, became an icon for champions of rugged individualism, from military leaders and presidents to celebrities who were swigging the whiskey on film (Paul Newman in Hud) and in their personal lives (Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, among others). New generations have continued to make these brands their own, hence their rise to iconic status—and their adoption by a wider swath of the general population.
The success of these brands wasn’t based on advertising or their own marketing endeavors. It was the result of their appeal to subcultures that were early adopters because the brand offered them a unique manner of self-expression. When fans became hardcore zealots, they did the marketing for the brand. In the past, it took time to build communities around brands, but with the instantaneous, global reach of the internet, the process now occurs at lightning speed.

J&M Brands has picked up a raft of new licensees for the hit TV show Miraculous. The new licensees join a strong line-up, adding a range of products covering many different categories including apparel, personal care, arts & crafts, stationery, bags, gifts, watches & clocks, fashion accessories, toys, bed and bath textile and home decor.
The new licensees include Canenco, whom will be bringing a complete line of arts & crafts and dress-up range to the market; 
Vadobag is launching a range of bags including backpacks, and shoulder bags; while Global Industry is busy developing a broad range of products including inflatables, tents, outdoor toys and an extensive gift line.

Global Icons LLC, USPS Enter Exclusive Worldwide Representation Agreement

Global Icons LLC entered an exclusive worldwide representation agreement with the United States Postal Service and will support USPS’s brand initiatives with engaging product collections worldwide.
The initial focus will be building out the existing USPS licensed program with items such as era-specific mailboxes, stationery, and mailing accessories. The second stage will leverage the Postal Service’s catalog of assets and imagery in transportation, design, science, music, and art into lifestyle categories including apparel and accessories, home décor, toys and games, digital and interactive, and gifts and novelties.

Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation Appoints Evolution as Exclusive Global Licensing and Brand Management Agency

The Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation appointed Evolution as its global licensing and brand management agency.
Ella Fitzgerald created and funded the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation to foster a love of reading and music in others, as well as provide assistance to the at-risk and disadvantaged members of our communities. The 100th anniversary of Fitzgerald's birthday—April 25—is being celebrated this year with multiple initiatives around the world.
Initiatives in the works for the Foundation include a concert tour, a Broadway musical based on Fitzgerald’s life, and a bio-pic feature film or limited series for broadcast or SVOD (streaming video on demand). Early stage concepts are also underway for branded dining destinations and jazz clubs.
In the consumer products arena, Evolution will pursue licensed categories such as collectibles, jewelry and accessories, alcohol, and publishing, which will include books about Fitzgerald’s love of jazz, her favorite recipes, a celebration of her life in pictures, and high-end art featuring classic album covers.
Events will include exhibits, new music releases, and independent tributes and concerts. In Washington, D.C., a year-long exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History titled, “First Lady of Song: Ella Fitzgerald at 100,” features awards, letters, sheet music, and costumes from Fitzgerald's archives, as well as videos of her performances. 
The Grammy Museum in Los Angeles also opened a new exhibit titled, “Ella at 100: Celebrating the Artistry of Ella Fitzgerald.” Additionally, Fitzgerald's songbook recordings are featured at the Great American Songbook Foundation's recently opened exhibit, “Ella Sings The Songbook,” located in Carmel, Ind.
Verve and UMe will feature a slate of releases throughout the year and into next year, including the release of 100 Songs For A Centennial and Ella Fitzgerald Sings The George and Ira Gershwin Song Books. Later this year all of Fitzergald and Louis Armstrong’s duets will be released with Cheek To Cheek: The Complete Ella & Louis Duets.
In February, the Ella Fitzgerald Song Books were released in a variety of high-resolution formats. Additionally, some of Fitzgerald's earliest recordings for Decca were made available digitally for the first time this year.

Stanley Weston Passes Away

Stanley Weston, the inventor of the G.I. Joe toy action figure, died on May 1 in Los Angeles at the age of 84.
Weston was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 1, 1933. He attended Jamaica High School in Queens and New York University before entering the army shortly after the end of the Korean War.
Upon his discharge from the army, he returned to New York City with his wife Ellen to work for the McCann Erickson advertising agency, and also enrolled at night to complete his MBA at New York University. He discovered the licensing and merchandising industry and left McCann to start Weston Merchandising, where he initially represented such properties as Dr. Kildaire, Soupy Sales, Twiggy, and How the West Was Won.
When Barbie dolls came out in 1960, Stan noticed that boys were playing with the Ken doll. He decided that there should be an action figure for boys, so he came up with the idea for a military action figure. He sold the concept that became G.I. Joe to Hasbro in 1963.
Weston’s company, renamed Leisure Concepts, went on to represent Farrah Fawcett during her Charlie’s Angels days, Bruce Jenner after his Olympic wins, the World Wrestling Federation, Nintendo, and numerous TV shows such as Welcome Back Kotter and Alf. Weston also helped create several other toy properties, including Thundercats.
Weston was inducted into the Licensing Industry Hall of Fame in 1989 as part of its inaugural induction class.
Weston is survived by his brother, Jay, and his three children, Steve, Cindy, and Brad, and five grandchildren.

Rovio Entertainment Appoints Evolution as Licensing Agent in the U.S., Names New SVP, New IP Sails into App Stores Worldwide

Rovio Entertainment appointed Evolution as its licensing agent in the U.S., focusing on consumer products and retail expansion. Evolution will represent Rovio’s ongoing Angry Birds initiatives for merchandising, promotions, and retail opportunities, while looking to focus on the Hatchlings, the newest addition to the franchise, for next year.
In a separate but related announcement, Simo Hämäläinen was named senior vice president, brand licensing, for Rovio Entertainment.
Hämäläinen has been with Rovio for more than four years and was the vice president of marketing and promotions before taking over as the head of all licensing operations. Prior to joining Rovio, he held several sales and marketing roles at Heineken, working with brands like Heineken, Sol, Fosters, and Pepsi.

Rovio launched Battle Bay, a real-time, five vs. five multiplayer game, now available on iOS and Android devices worldwide. The new IP, developed internally from Rovio, is the latest in the company’s game portfolio, including Angry Birds.
The characters of Battle Bay must fight for survival, and players must assemble in teams of five to challenge opposing teams in a real-time multiplayer showdown. Players will have the opportunity to customize ships, train a crew, make a ship of their own, and chat with team members using an in-game communication system.
The game marks Rovio’s first real-time competitive multiplayer game in a 3-D third person perspective.
