Disney Consumer Products Sets Date for Force Friday, Reveals Packaging Featuring New Star Wars Villain

Force Friday, a global event for fans of all ages to celebrate the launch of merchandise inspired by the film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, will take place on September 4. Toys, collectibles, and more will hit store shelves worldwide that day.
Fans who want to get their hands on Star Wars: The Force Awakens merchandise will be able to visit their local retailer starting at midnight on September 4 and are encouraged to document their experience on social media, using the hashtags #ForceFriday and #MidnightMadness. The products, ranging from toys, books, comics, ebooks, apps, and more will be available at mass retailers and Disney Store locations worldwide and on disneystore.com.
In addition, the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens packaging was revealed for the first time. It highlights the villain of the film, Kylo Ren.

Peppa Pig Set to Make a Big Splash in First-Ever U.S. Live Theatrical Tour

Entertainment One’s Peppa Pig is hitting the road for her first-ever U.S. theatrical tour, Peppa Pig’s Big Splash. The live stage show will visit 23 East Coast cities this November and December, including Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, and Boston. A second leg will take Peppa to additional U.S. cities next year.

Peppa Pig’s Big Splash is a fully immersive musical production featuring a dozen familiar and original songs, based on the popular Peppa Pig TV series. In Peppa Pig’s Big Splash, the nursery roof is leaking and Peppa and her friends need to fix it quickly. They set up a fair to raise money so Mr. Bull can do the repairs. Peppa, George, Mummy, and Daddy Pig—along with Danny Dog, Pedro Pony, and Suzy Sheep—work together to organize the day out, complete with a champion puddle jumping competition judged by Mr. Potato.

Voting Begins for LIMA International Licensing Excellence Awards

The International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA) has finalized the ballot for the 2015 International Licensing Awards. With 142 nominees from 14 countries, the candidates represent excellence in a wide array of categories, encompassing licensing, retailing, promotion, and consumer product. LIMA members may cast their votes online through May 12. Winners will be announced at the LIMA Awards Ceremony on June 9, during Licensing Expo in Las Vegas. 
 
Category updates for the 2015 ballot include separating film, TV, and entertainment into animation and live action; art and design was restructured to lifestyle: art, design, or fashion; digital/new media was updated to digital; and celebrity is now celebrity or music.
 
Additional awards categories include character or toy brand; sports or sports-themed entertainment; corporate brand; retailer of the year; licensed promotion; and overall best licensed program.
 
Nominations were solicited from the worldwide licensing industry. This year’s nominees for overall best licensed program, representing each of the major property classifications, are:

Star Wars Joins Forces with Disney Infinity for 3.0 Edition

The Star Wars universe will join Disney, Disney•Pixar, and Marvel in the Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition—the latest installment of the toys-to-life franchise from Disney Interactive.
Three Star Wars Play Sets will debut this fall. The Star Wars: Twilight of the Republic Play Set takes place in the height of the Jedi’s powers, where players will use the Force and Lightsabers in epic battles and master their combat skills alongside Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and Darth Maul. The Star Wars: Rise Against the Empire Play Set will take players on galaxy-spanning missions with Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Darth Vader. Players can pilot X-wing fighters or the Millennium Falcon to fight stormtroopers, or explore and partake in land-based missions on planets such as Tatooine, Hoth, and Endor.

Additionally, fans will have the unique opportunity to play with all of the Star Wars characters in all of the Star Wars Play Sets. Additional Play Sets joining Disney Infinity 3.0 include a Disney•Pixar Play Set based on the upcoming film Inside Out, and a Marvel Play Set featuring Hulkbuster Iron Man, Ultron, and other Marvel characters.
 
In addition to new Star Wars characters, new figures of fan-favorite characters from across The Walt Disney Co., including Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Sam Flynn and Quorra from Tron: Legacy, Mulan, and Olaf, among many others, will be available.

Genius Brands Licenses Thomas Edison’s Secret Lab in International Territories

Genius Brands International Inc. (GBI) has licensed its original animated series Thomas Edison’s Secret Lab to Da Vinci Learning for airing in Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, Turkey, and Africa.
 
Thomas Edison’s Secret Lab shows kids how fun science can be, encouraging them to explore the limits of their imaginations. The series follows Angie, a 12-year-old prodigy, and her young science club who accidentally discover Thomas Edison’s Secret Lab—a dream lab equipped with gizmos and gadgets, including two of Edison’s very last inventions: a hologram that brings Mr. Edison himself to life, and a virtual reality machine that lets them go anywhere. It even has a wacky robot called Von Bolt, who becomes part of every adventure.
 
In additional news, GBI has licensed the North American home entertainment rights, including DVD and specific digital rights, for Thomas Edison’s Secret Lab to NCircle Entertainment. NCircle will distribute Thomas Edison’s Secret Lab digitally and on DVD at major retail outlets nationwide and online starting in December. The series will also debut on Netflix in July and on PBS stations and the Kid Genius Cartoon Channel on Comcast in September.

Reading Rainbow to Launch Consumer Products Program

RRKidz LLC will partner with Brand Central LLC to launch a consumer products program to accompany Reading Rainbow’s recent digital re-launch and classic IP.
 
The Reading Rainbow brand came to fame first as a children’s TV series on PBS that encouraged kids to read during its 26-year run. In 2011, two years after the show’s conclusion, actor and host of Reading Rainbow LeVar Burton and his business partner Mark Wolfe founded RRKidz Inc. to continue to bring kids reading and enrichment experiences. Reimagined for the digital age, Reading Rainbow promotes fun in learning and exploration through its digital service with animated books, videos, and games for kids.
 
Brand Central will help launch a two-tiered Reading Rainbow-branded consumer products program to utilize both the brand’s nostalgia and history and its reinvigorated future. Brand Central will develop a collection of retro products for adults. The agency will also seek licensees to produce new products that will enhance Reading Rainbow’s digital learning platform, including games, publishing, crafts, activities, and educational products.

Sony, Rasta Imposta Partner for Pixels Halloween Costumes

Rasta Imposta has been granted a license from Sony Pictures Consumer Products to produce Halloween costumes featuring characters from Pixels, based on the movie set to hit theaters July 24. Rasta Imposta will bring the Arcaders to Halloween this year, along with Lady Lisa and the video game character Q*Bert from the upcoming film.

Mercis B.V., UNIQLO Team Up for Apparel Featuring Miffy

Mercis B.V. and UNIQLO have teamed up for an apparel line featuring Miffy, the classic children’s character based on Dutch artist Dick Bruna’s storybooks. The spring and summer kids’ range will help mark Miffy’s 60th anniversary this year.
 
The Miffy X UNIQLO range will roll out across UNIQLO stores in 15 countries, including Australia, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong and Macau, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the UK, and the U.S.
 
The range combines Dick Bruna’s illustrative style of minimal black lines contrasting with bright primary colors with UNIQLO’s contemporary approach to clothing design. Miffy’s silhouette is featured throughout. The collection includes girls’ T-shirts and shorts; and baby T-shirts, crew-neck bodysuits, and pajamas.

Hoho Rights Reveals International Sales for Kids’ Properties

Hoho Rights has revealed new international sales for its kids’ properties Cloudbabies, Everybody Loves a Moose, and Abadas.
 
Asian broadcasters TVB Pearl in Hong Kong, and Mediacorp in Singapore, have acquired Cloudbabies, while DVD company Panorama has also picked up the home entertainment and streaming video-on-demand rights for the series on Hong Kong. BBC Worldwide has acquired both Cloudbabies and mixed-media animation series Abadas for its CBeebies channel in Africa. Animated comedy series Everybody Loves A Moose has been sold to Gloob in Brazil.

Vandor Acquires Disney License

Vandor LLC will launch a new product collection that will feature classic Disney and Disney Junior characters. The Classics line, for adults and kids, includes Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. The Disney Junior line, based on popular Disney Junior TV shows, includes Sofia the First, Doc McStuffins, Minnie’s Bow-Toons, and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. The items will be featured in Vandor’s functional collection, available this summer, including water bottles, totes, tins, ceramic mugs, glassware, and more.  
                                                                                                                      
Vandor’s new products will be on display at major gift markets and industry shows throughout the year, including regional summer gift shows in Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.

Game of Thrones Ascent Launches on Amazon Kindle

Game of Thrones Ascent has launched on Amazon for Kindle Fire devices for the first time, joining availability on iOS, Android, and online platforms.
 
In Game of Thrones Ascent, fans can immerse themselves beyond the books and show, living the life of a noble, working with or against each other in a game world. Taking part in thousands of story-driven quests, players delve into the lore and develop their own lands and reputation among the Great Houses. The game also syncs up with episodes from the fifth season of the series, currently airing on HBO. New content will be released each week. Consumers can currently download the game from Amazon.

LMCA’s Innovation Consulting Subsidiary, ProdigyWorks, Adds Key New Leadership

LMCA has announced the addition of key staff to its innovation consulting subsidiary ProdigyWorks. Ted Curtin has been appointed EVP of marketing and innovation, and Brian Sayre has been named a Strategy & Innovation Consultant.  Both positions are effective immediately.

Licensing Expo has announced an expanded lineup of new exhibitors for 2015.  Sponsored by the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA), the Expo takes place on June 9 to 11 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Las Vegas.
 
This year, 150 new exhibitors will join the 2015 lineup, including A&E Networks, C3 Entertainment, Inc., Chronicle Books, Fine Art America, Global Trademark Licensing Ltd., Hot Pickle, Imperial War Museums (IWM), The Licensing Shop, Inc., Major League Baseball Players Association, Mondo TV, National Museum of the Royal Navy, Natural History Museum, Nintendo of America Inc., One Entertainment, The Royal Ballet, Sean Danconia, The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, SkyMall, Smiley, Xavier Games and YouTube with a pavilion of their brand partners.

Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron Breaks UK Box Office Record

Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron continues its run at the UK box office taking 22.5 million in just one week, setting a new record for the studio as the highest-grossing Disney seven day opening of all time.
 
The film has already dominated the UK box office since its release last Thursday, delivering a bigger opening weekend than any other film in 2015 and entering the record books as the biggest ever April opening. Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron not only recorded the highest-grossing opening weekend for a Marvel title, but the all-time biggest opening for a superhero movie.
  
Written and directed by Joss Whedon and produced by Kevin Feige, Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron is the latest superhero offering from Marvel Studios and looks on course to out-perform 2012’s blockbuster success Avengers Assemble, which took a mighty £51.9million at the UK box office in 2012.

Cartamundi Set to Launch Disney Retro Range

Cartamundi is set to launch a new range of card games with packaging and design inspired by classic Disney properties. The first three releases will star Mickey Mouse as he appeared in his earliest years. Disney Mickey Mouse Retro Edition Happy Families, Disney Mickey Mouse Retro Edition Game Box, and Mickey Mouse Retro Edition Game Box Compendium (Deluxe version) will be available in the fall.
 
The Happy Families box is a Mickey and Friends-themed take on the game. Disney Mickey Mouse Retro Edition Game Box contains a deck of 55 playing cards; a leaflet with eight different playing card games, including Old Maid, Go Fish, Kilos, and Patience; a Yahtzee game; five dice with a guide to multiple dice games; a Yahtzee notebook; and a leather dice cup. The Deluxe version also contains a Happy Families game and a memo game.
 
All the games and packaging will include imagery from the earliest days of Mickey Mouse and friends such as Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck, housed in a beautiful box with a pre-faded retro look and illustrated with facsimiles of the original Mickey from 1928.

DC Comics X Hello Kitty New Deals Announced

Warner Bros. Consumer Products EMEA and Sanrio GmbH have announced the launch of two new product collections for DC Comics X Hello Kitty.  
 
Flik Flak, a company of the Swatch Group, has just launched DC Comics X Hello Kitty watches for children and in a separate deal, leading Spanish department store retailer El Corte Inglés have released a nightwear collection for girls.
 
The latest designs join the Batman and Superman character-inspired watches that launched globally in February 2015.  Three further Batman and Superman inspired watches are scheduled for release in 2015 taking the total number of Warner Bros. branded SKU’s to 8, marking a significant proportion of the partner’s licensed offering this year.

Licensing.biz People Award Winners Announced

The Licensing.biz People Awards saw over 200 people celebrating the winners at the inaugural ceremony.
 
Start Licensing was named as Agent of the Year, and Ian Downes picked up the Outstanding Achievement Award.
Emily Aldridge of GB Eye and Vicky Hill of Bulldog, were named Rising Star – Licensee and Rising Star – Licensor/Agent, respectively.
The Entertainer was named named Retailer of the Year.
The Unsung Hero was awarded to Rainbow Productions. Marmite Easter Eggs from Kinnerton/Unilever won the Brand Extension & Beyond award.
Character World was named Licensee Team of the Year, while Peppa Pig saw eOne pick up the Licensor Team of the Year award.
Nickelodeon and O’Keefe’s Bakery collected the Licensing Deal of the Year award for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pizzas.
“A huge congratulations to all our winners, and a big thank you to everyone who came along to the first ever Licensing.biz People Awards,” said Licensing.biz editor Samantha Loveday.

Smiley Partners with McDonald’s

McDonald’s has partnered with Smiley to bring a new campaign to life.
 
In 2013, McDonald’s created an innovative new campaign in the French market celebrating its products by displaying them through close-up images, without any logo or words. In 2014, the brand evolved this campaign even further by creating the “picto” campaign and now for 2015, McDonald’s has pushed the limits of this concept even further by creating mash ups of the iconic McDonald’s signs with day-to-day emblematic symbols.
 
As part of this unique relationship, Smiley will feature comprehensively throughout this campaign that will be running in France and Monaco. It will appear on tray mats and posters in-store, as well as an advertising campaign including exposure on bus shelters, billboards, posters, and a digital presence on the McDonald’s website and Facebook page – Smiley helps bring the McDonald’s French fries to life in a whole new way.
 
In addition to the outdoor and in store advertising campaign activity, the creative assets from this campaign –including the Smiley French fries image - will feature as a capsule collection for apparel and accessories created exclusively for Colette. This limited edition collection includes T-shirts, tote bags, and scarves, all available in store at Colette and exclusively online.

Rainbow Signs Brazilian Broadcast Deal for Winx Club

Rainbow has signed a major new agreement that will see hit kids property Winx Club broadcast on TV Cultura, one of the leading free to air channels in Brazil.
 
TV Cultura is set to broadcast Winx Club series five and six. The show will screen every weekday from May 2015 right through to the end of 2016.
 
“TV Cultura is a major Brazilian broadcaster so we are obviously delighted they have snapped up Winx Club,” says Andrea Graciotti, Head of Sales and Co-Production at Rainbow. “The series already has a huge following across Brazil and fans will be thrilled to hear this exciting news!”

Phil Carroll Joins Pedigree Books

Phil Carroll, former Head of Book Buying for Sainsbury's Supermarkets, is to join Pedigree Books Ltd initially as their Interim Head of Sales for the Annuals & Yearbooks publisher.
 
Carroll will work alongside Matthew Reynolds, Publishing Director at Pedigree, and will join the group from Monday 4th May with responsibility for driving forward Pedigree’s sales team across all sales channels and ranges which include Annuals, Yearbooks, learning and seasonal activity formats for kids.
 
Carroll said, “I'm excited by the challenges and opportunities this role will offer and I'm looking forward to working with a great team of people and being part of a company with such a strong reputation in children’s publishing.”
 
Reynolds said, “In view of the changing face of retail and the need for all suppliers to measure up, we have asked Phil to join us to help develop our existing trading models and relationships to further address the needs of our retail customers. Tottenham Hotspur to Return to the Licensing Expo for Third Time

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club is set to exhibit at the Las Vegas Licensing Expo for a third year running as part of a continued effort to engage with a growing fanbase in North America.
 
The London-based club currently has over 40 Official Supporters Clubs in the region, more than any other English Premier League team, and include US Men’s National Team’s Young Player of the Year, DeAndre Yedlin, amongst its players.
 
Following a successful tour of the US and Canada in the summer of 2014, that saw three friendly matches played in front of sold out venues in Seattle, Toronto and Chicago, Tottenham Hotspur will take part in the prestigious MLS All-Star match in Denver, Colorado, July 29, 2015, taking on the best players from the US professional league.
 
The Club also continues to make a significant commitment to grassroots soccer in the region, launching youth partner clubs in Tallahassee, Florida, and El Cerrito, California, that receive hands-on coaching from Tottenham Hotspur’s Global Coaching team, developing players using a unique ethos that is shared by the Club’s Academy.

Gruffalo Signings Announced by Magic Light

Magic Light Pictures has announced updates to its extensive Gruffalo licensing programme.
 
As part of its licensing deal with Yorkshire Tea, which sees the Gruffalo as the face of the brand’s Yorkshire Tree campaign, a bespoke piece of Gruffalo artwork will feature on two million limited edition packs of tea, replacing the famous Yorkshire landscape currently on the packaging.
 
Magic Light has also created a free interactive app to support the campaign. The Gruffalo and the Vanishing Wood is a fun and educational mini-game designed for children aged 3-7. Available on the App Store, Google Play and Amazon the game allows users to plant trees with Gruffalo and Mouse before they all vanish from their woodland home.

Angry Birds Protecting Real-Life Counterparts in the South Pacific

Angry Birds has teamed up with BirdLife International in a unique campaign
to protect real-life birds in the South Pacific. Like their counterparts in the game,
Pacific birds are threatened by introduced predators eating their eggs and so pushing them to the verge of extinction.
 
Rovio Entertainment Ltd, announced with the planned release of Angry Birds Seasons on the 30 April that they are taking up the fight with BirdLife International to save the most threatened birds of the Pacific from extinction. The new release will allow gamers to explore the story behind real birds in the Pacific and support their struggle against non-native predators.

BLE Launches Blog

Brand Licensing Europe has announced the launch of The BLE Blog (www.thebleblog.com) offering thoughts, insights and opinions from the European licensing industry’s leading event.
 
Aimed at both visitors and exhibitors, the BLE Blog will feature posts from the team on getting the most from the show, as well as the latest news, initiatives, and promotions. It will also publish a number of guest posts over the coming months from show partners, speakers and exhibitors on a range of topics including industry trends, legal issues, five minute interviews with senior attendees and a series of ‘how to’ guides.

Woolly and Tig Expands Licensing Activities

The CBeebies series Woolly and Tig has announced two new licensing deals as the CBeebies broadcast continues to deliver high ratings and online interaction for the brand. Both deals add to the growing media presence for the brand and continue to consolidate Woolly’s position as one of CBeebies most important brands.
 
The first deal is with Immediate Media who have confirmed a further two years inclusion of Woolly in their pre-school CBeebies magazine. This will include several specials and stand alone magazines too over the coming months.
 
The second deal is with Redan who are going to be including Woolly in their Fun to Learn series.

Marvista Acquires Latin America Rights for Yo-Kai from Dentsu

Following the recent announcement that MarVista Entertainment  acquired the Latin American rights to Little Battlers eXperience, the popular animation franchise from Dentsu Entertainment USA, Inc., the two companies have concluded a new agreement for MarVista to acquire Latin American rights to 26 half-hour episodes of the Japanese hit animated television series, Yo-Kai Watch and will control the licensing and merchandising rights in the region. 
 
Most recently, Dentsu Entertainment USA, Inc. and TV Tokyo Corporation announced a partnership with leading global play company Hasbro Inc. to bring the popular multimedia franchise to new markets, with Hasbro introducing an innovative toy line for the franchise in 2016.
 
In addition to the TV series, the Yo-Kai Watch franchise has enjoyed tremendous success across several product categories since it began in Japan, including selling millions of copies of Yo-Kai Watch manga and related books and generating hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars in retail sales of toys and other merchandise, that does not include games, music CDs, and publishing.

Playboy Announces Chinese Expansion

Playboy Enterprise Inc. has announced the expansion of its licensing presence in China, signing a new 10-year partnership with a major licensing partner.  
 
While some brands struggle to penetrate the Chinese market, Playboy has achieved a leading position.  Playboy enjoys a 97 percent brand awareness among Chinese consumers and with the new partnership, will reach up to 3,500 retail touch points in the Mainland. As part of the licensing deal, Playboy will accelerate its growth in China to reach a new generation of consumers with men’s and women’s fashion apparel and accessories.  
 
The iconic brand has had a track record of success of doing business in China for more than 20 years, generating $5 billion in retail revenue in China in the last decade.
 
Under the new licensing partnership, Handong United will handle the manufacturing and distribution of a wide assortment of men’s and women’s fashion apparel, including casual fashion apparel, formal and casual footwear, and accessories, such as belts, bags, backpacks, wallets, and travel luggage. Leveraging Handong’s broad distribution network, Playboy is expected to further expand beyond its current reach from 3,100 to 3,500 retail touch points.

The primary responsibilities of the Licensing Director is to identify, develop, negotiate and manage our day-to-day licensing business relationships and associated licensing responsibilities.  This “roll-up-your-sleeves” position also develops research and prospecting strategies for licensing opportunities.  The Licensing Director is also responsible to develop and merchandise licensed product by working closely with management and the design and sales teams to drive product to market, as well as be the liaison with licensors to obtain style guides and interpret product and design needs for each of our retail customers.  In addition to the creative component, the position involves considerable interaction with major consumer products companies to facilitate contract acquisition and renewal as well as sales forecasting, royalty reporting and tracking.  Licensing experience in consumer product development, production, merchandising, acquisition and management for a manufacturer and firsthand working relationship experience with major licensors: DISNEY, Marvel, Nickelodeon, WB, DC, etc., a must.
