Disney Joins The BFG

Walt Disney Studios will co-produce and co-finance Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film The BFG. It will be Spielberg's first time directing a Disney-branded movie.
 
The BFG is the tale of a young London girl and the mysterious Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country. Based on the novel by Roald Dahl, The BFG was published in 1982.
 
Mark Rylance will play the titular BFG, and Ruby Barnhill will play Sophie. They are joined by Bill Hader, Jemaine Clement, Michael David Adamthwaite, Daniel Bacon, Chris Gibbs, Adam Godley, Jonathan Holmes, Paul Moniz de Sa, and Olafur Olaffson, all cast as giants. Penelope Wilton has been cast as The Queen, and Rebecca Hall as the Queen’s maid, Mary.

DCP Launches Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron Merchandise

Disney Consumer Products (DCP) and Marvel have launched a merchandise program for Marvel’s Avenger: Age of Ultron at retailers now. Licensees include Hasbro, Lego, Hot Wheels, Her Universe, Under Armour, Mad Engine, Jay Franco, Funko, Rubie’s Costume Co., and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. Products include electronic action figures with voice-activation, 6V ride-on super cars, light-up repulsor FX gloves, and a disk-launching shield. Multiple comic titles published by Marvel and a publishing program from Disney Publishing Worldwide (DPW) also support the film.


Marvel has introduced “Avengers Hero Up,” a pre-awareness campaign for Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Running through the end of this month, the campaign leverages the new dedicated Avengers site on marvelkids.com to introduce a kid-targeted video each week. Current videos include sneak peeks at the Marvel’s Avengers Assemble animated series, Lego Marvel Super Heroes shorts, and a behind-the-scenes look at new merchandise from Hasbro, Hot Wheels, Mad Engine, and Funko.
 
Marvel and Walmart have joined forces to launch a free mobile app, Super Heroes Assemble, available later this month. Through the app, and timed to the theatrical movie release, Walmart customers will be able to interact with Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron signage throughout stores to unlock exclusive content, such as character assets for Avengers fans to gear up digitally and 3-D photo opportunities. Other features will include access to behind-the-scenes footage, cast interviews, and character pages.

Licensing Expo Reveals Expanded Sports Lineup

Licensing Expo has revealed an expanded sports lineup for this year's show. Held June 9 to 11 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Licensing Expo will welcome high-profile sports brands, including the Major League Baseball Players Association; National Football League Players Inc.; Tottenham Hotspur Football Club; Dominie Luxury; Kenekt; Nitro Circus Live; IMG Worldwide Inc., and One Entertainment. 
 
One Entertainment represents Copa America, a major soccer tournament that will be held in the U.S. next June. More than 1.5 million people are expected to attend the competition. Additional soccer brands represented by One Entertainment include FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Cruz Azul, the Brazilian Football Confederation, the French Football Federation, the Royal Dutch Football Association, and The Football Association.

Epic Rights Promotes Lisa Streff to Executive Vice President, Global Licensing

Lisa Streff has been promoted to executive vice president, global licensing at Epic Rights.
 
Streff will be responsible for directing Epic Rights’ global strategies for artists’ brand development, in addition to establishing partnerships between consumer products and entertainment-based properties. She will spearhead the global licensing, merchandising, and retail efforts of Epic Rights' growing portfolio of brands, including AC/DC, KISS, John Lennon, Woodstock, CBGB, Aerosmith, Jefferson Airplane, Billy Idol, Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Gary Baseman, and more.
 
Streff joined Epic Rights from the launch of the company in January 2014 as senior vice president of licensing, focusing on developing licensing and consumer products throughout North America.

Rubie's Pet Shop Boutique Launches Costumes for Paw Patrol

Rubie’s Pet Shop Boutique has launched officially licensed pet costumes for Paw Patrol. Designed for dogs, the Paw Patrol costume collection features detailed outfits of Marshall, Chase, and Skye. Costumes for each character are available in small, medium, large, and extra-large sizes. In addition, Rubie’s Costume Co. also offers Paw Patrol costumes for toddlers.

Gas Monkey Garage Signs Seven New Licensees

Brandgenuity, Gas Monkey Garage’s exclusive North American licensing agent, has secured seven new licensing partnerships that will extend the brand's program into new categories.
 
The new licensees include GTECH for lottery items, Greenlight for die-cast vehicles, Northwest for home accessories, Piston Clothing for outerwear and work apparel, Rabbit Tanaka for novelty items and barware, Trends for posters and calendars, YUMS for New Era hats, and Zynga for online gaming.
 
Brandgenuity will continue to expand the Gas Monkey Garage licensing program strategically, with new partners in after-market auto accessories, apparel, accessories, gifts, gaming, and more.

SBLG Appoints Mona Bijoor to New Advisory Committee

Saban Brands Lifestyle Group (SBLG) has launched an Advisory Committee for its Lifestyle Group that will be dedicated to providing counsel for the company on its current brands and future acquisitions. The committee will meet quarterly and will be comprised of industry executives who will provide insights, guidance, and strategic input into SBLG and its growing portfolio of diverse fashion and lifestyle properties. 
 
Mona Bijoor is the first member appointed to SBLG's Advisory Committee. Bijoor is founder and CEO of JOOR, a digital wholesale marketplace that connects apparel brands with more than 100,000 retailers worldwide. She will assist Saban Brands in expanding its global network and provide industry expertise in the fashion and lifestyle brand management space. Her industry experience includes working with retail giants such as Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor, and Harrods; as well as fashion labels including Michael Kors, rag & bone, and Phillip Lim. Bijoor also has experience working in-house at Ann Taylor, Chanel, Elie Tahari, and more.

Russell Wilson Tops NFLPI Year-End List, Leads in Collectible Figurine Sales from Funko

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson retained the No. 1 ranking for a second consecutive year on the NFL Players Inc. (NFLPI) Top 50 Player Sales List for the 2015 fiscal year, based on total overall sales of all officially licensed products from March 1, 2014, through February 28, 2015. Wilson again surpassed quarterback Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos, who finished atop the list for the third fiscal quarter, but ended the year at No. 2.


The list, released quarterly by NFLPI, the marketing and licensing arm of the NFL Players Association, is based on total overall sales of all officially licensed products from online and traditional retail outlets as reported by more than 80 NFLPI licensees such as Nike, VF Imagewear, Fanatics, Outerstuff, Fathead, McFarlane Toys, Oyo Sportstoys, Bleacher Creatures, Forever Collectibles, Funko, FBF Originals, and Photo File. Licensed product categories include men's, women's, and youth game jerseys and T-shirts, murals, figurines, matted and framed photos, socks, vinyl collectibles, plush, memorabilia, and electronic accessories.

NFLPI licensees generated retail sales exceeding $1.4 billion during the year.

Gearing up for next year’s 55th anniversary celebration, Firefly Brand Management has signed a number of new Mr. Bubble licensees. Mattel Announces Licensing Partnerships with Pingu Awards

Mattel’s will celebrate its best-in-class licensors with the 2014 Pingu Awards celebrating the best in innovation, design and creativity.
 
Leading the Pingu Awards for the Most Innovative Product was HTI, creator of the Barbie Colour Change Glam Bag, a great example of innovation within the toy category. Markwins won best hard lines product for its fantastic bespoke innovation across 3 key brands – Barbie, Ever After High and Monster High, while Marks & Spencer’s was praised for its imaginative soft lines range featuring the winning LED flashing light Fireman Sam T-shirt.

Lawless Entertainment Appointed Worldwide Representatives for Poby’s Adventures

Lawless Entertainment has been appointed worldwide representative for Poby’s Adventures, a book-based preschool property that features Poby, a magical blue orphan lamb who is adopted by the moon.
 
Lawless Entertainment is handling all licensing, publishing, and merchandising worldwide, and seeks co-production partners for the project.

AALMG Signed to Golf with Mulligan

All American Licensing & Management Group (AALMG) has signed Dman Productions, the team behind an integrated entertainment brand launch under the banner Mulligan, which will be anchored by the release of a four-quadrant animated feature film of the same title. AALMG is planning a multi-platform strategy for the release, which will provide entertainment and celebrate the values inherent to the game of golf. A Chinese co-production partnership with Mandoo Studios assures domestic release and distribution in China, a fast-growing market for cinema and golf.
 
With elements of golf central to the overall narrative, Mulligan has an opportunity to integrate brands into the film that are endemic to the game. The authenticity of its production is reinforced when brands are able to organically participate as the game itself, which represents a composite of players, products, and a robust community worldwide.
 
The film is projected to release in the summer of 2017.

WBCP Grants Multiple Property Rights to 3 Dimensional Art LLC

Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) has granted 3 Dimensional Art LLC the rights to develop innovative 3-D art products for classic Warner Bros. properties and DC Comics Super Heroes, which are licensed by WBCP on behalf of DC Entertainment. 3D Arts’ license includes properties such as Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo, Harry Potter, Batman, and Superman.
 
Through the agreement, 3D Art will create and release a range of products including wall art, posters, postcards, magnets, and other consumer products featuring DC Comics' world of superheroes; as well as Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo, and Harry Potter. Initial products will be released during the second quarter of this year. All products will feature high-resolution lenticular imagery, which adds depth and movement, and brings featured characters to life.

Kinetic Sand Teams Up with Autism Speaks to Raise Awareness

Spin Master Ltd. and its Kinetic Sand line of squeezable sands has entered into a new partnership in the U.S. and Canada with Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization.
 
The agreement will see Spin Master raise funds for the organization through the sale of Kinetic Sand, in addition to exploring the positive benefits that play skills and social experiences may have for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs).

April is Autism Awareness Month, featuring a wide range of Light It Up Blue-themed activities that help spread awareness of ASDs. Spin Master has joined the celebration this year with activities including exclusive Kinetic Sand play table experiences at various retail locations and at the annual Walk Now for Autism Speaks events at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. on April 18 and at Earl Bales Park in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on June 21.

Super Why! Partners with U.S. Department of Education

Out of the Blue Enterprises, creators of Super Why!, has announced its participation with the U.S. Department of Education’s Accessible Television Portal Project, a subscription video on demand service (SVOD) that will digitally stream children’s and family television shows to students with disabilities.
 
The programs will be made available free, on-demand, to qualifying students with disabilities. All of the programming on the portal has been audio described and captioned, which opens up the TV shows to the millions of students who are visually and hearing impaired.

Revelation Entertainment Offers an Array of Brand Marketing Solutions

Matt Webb has revised and rebranded his former company, NetworkTV, into Revelation Entertainment. The company provides services including marketing, kids' TV development, licensing, retail, communications, gaming, and live events.
 
Revelation Entertainment has worked with brands from a broad range of sectors. Webb and his team have been responsible for more than 200 retail-related promotions with retailers such as Toys "R" Us, Smyths, Woolworths, Tesco, and Virgin Megastores. These have included “token-collect” activities with national newspapers, on-pack joint ventures with brands such as Coca-Cola and Cadbury, and social media campaigns.

Planeta Junior Signs Brand Management Agreement for Pumpkin Reports

Planeta Junior has signed an agreement with production company Motion Pictures, covering the promotion and representation of its property Pumpkin Reports in Spain, Portugal, France, Greece, Turkey and Eastern Europe. Thanks to this alliance, Planeta Junior will be responsible for managing toys, editorial, licensing and merchandising, promotions, sponsorship and digital and interactive products in these territories.
 
The Pumpkin Reports brand is based on the series of the same name produced by Motion Pictures, Sample and Young Jump Animation in collaboration with TVE, Televisió de Catalunya, ICEC (Institut Català de les Empreses Culturals) and RAI.

Deer Little Forest and Kennedy Publishing Extend Collaboration

Following Deer Little Forest’s successful UK magazine launch in Get Busy and Busy Time, Kennedy Publishing and Koko Media have announced an extension of their agreement, making Deer Little Forest a regular feature in every 2015 issue, with a first look option for 2016.

LMI Teams with Bright Star Characters for Popcorn the Bear

Debbie Howard created Popcorn the Bear in 2004 from a passion for bears and since then this exciting brand has gone from strength to strength.  Aimed at pre-schoolers, the focus of the Brand is on emotional learning - to instil confidence, encourage sharing and to deal with feelings of anger, sadness and other emotions - together with learning values.
 
There are several illustrated books about his adventures with a new Imagination series of books being Debbie is co-writing with Bill Schultz (Home Plate Entertainment).
A range of books has been published for pre-schoolers and the merchandise programme covers a number of other product categories. WW Group is developing a range of babywear and pre-school apparel including Outwear, Underwear, Nightwear.
An animation series is also in development.
 
Key product categories are toys, apparel and publishing. Following these, we see stationery, greetings cards, calendars, bedding, personal care and ceramics/melamine.  “I am so delighted to be working with such a renowned and well respected Agency.  LMI shares my vision for the future of Popcorn the Bear!” said Debbie.

London Stationery Show on Its Way

Licensing is set to be the next big thing in stationery, judging by the increase in the number of licensed products which will be in evidence at next week’s London Stationery Show (28 - 29 April).
 
Stationery is enjoying a new lease of life thanks to its new found fashion status and the arrival on the scene of designer names such as Cath Kidston, Ted Baker, and Orla Kiely, and now licensed products are set to take it to the next level.
 
Visitors to next week’s stationery event of the year will see among others the launch of ranges for Kellogg’s Vintage and Tony the Tiger (Mad Stuff), Roald Dahl (Portico Designs) and Disney Frozen (Pyramid International and DKL Marketing).  Other licenses on show include Star Wars, Jungle Book, V&A, Minions, Despicable Me, Superman, London Underground, Woodland Trust, Anorak, Vintage Ladybird and Laura Ashley.
 
Other exhibitors with licensed products include BrownTrout Publishing, ExaClair, Genie/Dieter Gerth, GO Stationery, Otter House, PCC/M&G Stationery, Presco, Publishers Group, Quadrille, Robert Frederick, Sambro, Santoro, Sinclairs, SLG, Strawberry Design & Marketing, West Design and Wild & Wolf.

HarperCollins and Hello Kitty Renew License, Extends Reach

HarperCollins Children’s Books has announced the renewal of the publishing license for the iconic Hello Kitty brand.  Publishing of activity, learning, gift and electronic titles will continue and, for the first time, rights will be extended to a significant number of new territories including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
 
The new deal was agreed by Rachel Denwood, Publishing and Creative Director at HarperCollins, and Matthew Conrad, Chief Operating Officer, Fluid World.
 
New publishing for the brand will include a range of activity books featuring the things Hello Kitty loves the most, starting with dancing and playing shops. There will also be a range of the cutest books ever featuring, for the first time, photos of Hello Kitty’s favourite cute kittens and puppies, alongside Hello Kitty herself. HarperCollins will also publish a range of high-end gift titles, including Icon, a beautiful book looking at how Hello Kitty’s style has developed through the ages.

Cartoon Network Wins Licensor of the Year— Entertainment at Indian Retail Awards 2015

Cartoon Network’s Ben 10 won the Best Licensor of the Year award in the Entertainment category for its Ben 10 franchise at the 4th Indian Retail and e-Retail Awards 2015, held on April 17-18 in Gurgaon near New Delhi.
 
With over 5,000 SKUs, Ben 10 came out a winner among all the kids entertainment for having the largest assortment of products available across a single entertainment IP. In 2015, the franchise celebrates its 10th year and is going from strength to strength. Ben 10 licensed products are sold across all product categories including apparel, back to school, home furnishings, FMCG, publishing and many more. The brand recently launched themed tablets in partnership with Eddy – a first in the kids’ genre.
 

9 Story Media Group Announces Sale of Wild Kratts Season 4 to Discovery Kids in Asia Pacific

9 Story Media Group has licensed an additional 26 x 22’ episodes of the animated action adventure series Wild Kratts to Discovery Kids in Asia Pacific. The children’s network also renewed the first season of the series along with season one of Finding Stuff Out (16 x 22’) which will both air across Asia Pacific, and seasons one and two of Survive This (28 x 22’) which will air in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong.
 
Wild Kratts has previously been licensed to Discovery Kids (Latin America), Super RTL (Germany), France Télévisions (France), TV3 (Spain), SIC (Portugal), RTE (Ireland), VRT (Belgium), Minimax (Eastern Europe), Minika (Turkey), Primetime (Colombia), E Junior (UAE), Al Jazeera Children’s Channel (Middle East), Noga, (Israel) and MediaCorp PDT Ltd. (Singapore).
 
Wild Kratts premiered on PBS KIDS in the U.S. in 2011 and on TVO, Knowledge Network and Télé-Quebec in Canada.  A co-production between Kratt Brothers Company and 9 Story Media Group, Wild Kratts is distributed in the U.S. and Canada by Kratt Brothers Company and internationally by 9 Story Media Group. The series was created and developed by real life brothers and zoologists, Martin and Chris Kratt.

LMCA Expands Shanghai Office Staff

LMCA today announced that Jane Ma was appointed Assistant Manager, Brand Licensing, located in the company’s Shanghai office, effective immediately.
 
Ma reports to George Williams, managing director, LMCA Asia.
 
Williams said, “The appointment of Ma to the position of assistant manager, brand licensing affirms LMCA’s commitment to ensure LMCA’s clients continue to receive the very best professional licensing services.”
 
Prior to joining LMCA, Ma was brand management supervisor with Global Brands Group where she oversaw licensee compliance and product quality control for fashion and accessories for brands such as Jeep in China.  Ma also brings brand experience in the film and television industry where she worked for Cathay Media Group.
