Licensing Expo Shifts Dates to May in 2017

Licensing Expo is moving a month earlier next year: May 23 to 25, 2017. According to the show’s organizers, this shift provides an opportunity for exhibitors and attendees to better leverage the time of year and the proximity of Licensing Expo to Brand Licensing Europe (BLE) in October. This move offers an additional month of business opportunities between the two events. The shift also offers more time between Licensing Expo and E3.
 
The show will continue to be held at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

GBI Signs Sony Music Entertainment to Launch Genius Brands Music

Genius Brands International Inc. (GBI) signed a multi-year agreement with Sony Music Entertainment and Legacy Recordings label to launch Genius Brands Music worldwide.
 
The deal includes music-driven tween brand SpacePOP, set to launch this fall. GBI will support SpacePOP’s launch with its music-based apps, web series, linear TV exposure, live tour, and licensing and merchandising programs.
 
Sony Music Entertainment will distribute Genius Brands Music under Baby Genius for toddlers, and under Kid Genius for tweens and other age groups.

Nintendo, Sonic Partner for Nintendo Treats with Meals

Nintendo partnered with Sonic Drive-In to offer Nintendo treats for its kids meals from April 19 to June 30. Each Wacky Pack kids meal will come with a toy based on Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam for Nintendo 3DS.

The Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam toys include five classic Nintendo characters and offer a variety of play value. One toy shaped like Mario races across the room on wheels and another features Paper Mario and Luigi spinning like a top.

Finlayson Appoints Knockout Licensing Across U.S. and Canada

Finlayson appointed Knockout Licensing for the U.S. and Canada to expand to new categories, including home furnishings and décor, housewares, fashion accessories, gifts, paper products, and fabrics.

Finlayson, a Scandinavian design brand, includes more than 100,000 designs in its collection with digital renditions available for licensing.

Condé Nast Partners With Dorya; Launches First Fashion Coloring Book

Condé Nast partnered Dorya to create the Vogue Living furniture line, set to debut later this year.

The 30-piece collection will include luxurious statement case goods and upholstered products for residential and commercial use, including living room, dining, and bedroom collections.

In a separate deal, Condé Nast launched its first fashion-coloring book Vogue Colors A to Z featuring art deco patterns, letters, and drawings of women in different dresses.
 
Printed on thick paper, this 64-pages book includes 26 archival magazine covers from 10 American and French illustrators featuring boas, bows, hats headpieces, fans, pearls, gloves, exotic animals, and 21 dresses from 1912 to 1932.

Jewel Branding & Licensing Partners Designers with Fox Chapel Publishing

Jewel Branding & Licensing partnered designers Valerie McKeehan of Lily & Val and Robin Pickens with Fox Chapel Publishing for developing coloring books.
 
McKeehan’s Chalk It coloring books feature chalkboard art and Pickens’ Color Seek & Find series features miniature drawings and symbols inside each illustration. 

The Licensing Phrase Book 2016—Appeal for Phrases

UK industry charity The Light Fund aims to raise £120,000 in 2016 in order to achieve an overall target of £1,000,000 over the course of its 13-year history.
 
As part of its initiatives this year, The Light Fund plans to publish an updated edition of The Licensing Phrase Book and distribute for free at Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, The Licensing Awards in London, Brand Licensing Europe, and other major licensing events.
 
Now is your chance to contribute to the new edition. The Light Fund is looking for words/phrases/expressions that you have come across in your daily licensing work that they can “translate” into ordinary English. For example:
 
Licensing Speak: ‘This is a long-term property’
English: ‘Don’t expect to make any money on this in the next five years’
 
Licensing Speak: ‘There will be a second window when the DVD comes out’
English: ‘The movie has moved no merchandise whatsoever’

GBI Appoints Rebecca Hershinger as Chief Financial Officer

Genius Brands International Inc. (GBI) appointed Rebecca Hershinger as Chief Financial Officer.

In her new role, Hershinger will be responsible for GBI’s corporate finance, accounting, and financial reporting functions. She will also handle investor relations and corporate development.

Hershinger began working with GBI in 2014 through CFO Advisory Services Inc., a corporation she founded that provided accounting and business advisory services to private and public companies.

Hershinger also held finance and corporate development positions at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. and served as an investment-banking analyst for JP Morgan Chase & Co.

Blueprint Launches Moomin Range for Summer Launch

Blueprint Collections Ltd. is set to launch a Moomin stationery, gifts, and bags range for tween girls and young adults.
 
The line includes filing and storage, notebooks, pads and journals, writing instruments, stationery accessories, bags, and gift items. All products feature illustrations of Moomintroll, Snorkmaiden, Snufkin, Little My, and other inhabitants of Moominvalley.
 
The collection is set to launch at bookshops, stationery shops, major retailers, and online this summer.

The Giant Wiggle Charity Event Attracts More Than 200 School Kids

The Very Hungry Caterpillar brand participated in The Giant Wiggle charity event for the third successful year. The brand partners with Action for Children charity for this fundraising campaign for nurseries, children’s centers, and families across the UK.
 
This year, more than 200 school kids attended the event, which included Very Hungry Caterpillar craft activities, a Giant Wiggle conga line along a carved wooden Very Hungry Caterpillar story scene trail, storytelling sessions, and face painting.
 
Action for Children, Rocket Licensing, and the world’s most famous caterpillar are already planning the 2017 and 2018 events in order to further build the popularity of this major charity drive in the run-up to 2019: the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and the 150th anniversary of Action for Children.

Telefunken Signs LMCA for U.S. and China

Telefunken Licenses GmbH and licensing agency LMCA signed a comprehensive licensing agency agreement. LMCA will exclusively represent Telefunken to expand Telefunken’s trademark licensing business in the U.S. and in China for a wide range of categories, including TV/video products and domestic appliances.

I am looking for a role which utilises my skills in negotiation and relationship building and can develop my experience within the licensing field. Having licensed book content to a wide variety of customers from national Newspapers to international Publishers I would relish the experience to work in a new industry, licensing new content to new clients.
 
I realise that a move across from traditional publishing may mean a step down from the managerial role I was in before. I'm enthusiastic to work in a new industry and feel my skills are easily transferable and am happy to look outside licensing roles also.
