Cartamundi Welcomes King and Queen of Belgium to Turnhout

On Thursday 25 February, Cartamundi welcomed two extra special guests to its home in Turnhout. As part of their visit to the province of Antwerp, their Majesties the King and the Queen of Belgium paid a working visit to Cartamundi, the global market leader in card games and playing cards.
The King and Queen's Cartamundi programme included an informal welcome from the chairman and members of the Board of Directors, along with the CEO and the directors, who then explained the pillars of the business to the Royal Couple. The focus was on the group’s historical and economic importance due to its strategic focus on innovation and creativity. The visit ended with a tour around various departments of the company (from creation via pre-press and printing to high quality finishing) and an introduction to the employees who monitor quality throughout the chain.
The royal visit was in recognition of the hard work of all Cartamundi staff in building a family business into one of the leading businesses in Belgium, and a global market leader in card games and playing cards.
In fact Turnhout and Cartamundi together play a pivotal role in the global production of playing cards. The first cards produced in the area appeared in the 18th century. Their production was the beginning of a business that eventually became Cartamundi, a group established in 1970, but one that can boast more than 250 years of experience in the production and sale of playing cards, game cards and complete board games.
Trudi Bishop, Head of Marketing and Licensing, Cartamundi, says: “It has been a great honour for Cartamundi to welcome the Royal Couple to its home town. We are delighted that the achievements of the company have merited this visit and fully intend to add to those achievements in the coming years.”

Cover of The Tale of Kitty-In-Boots Unveiled

For the first time, Frederick Warne & Co., Beatrix Potter’s original publisher and an imprint of Penguin Random House Children’s, have revealed the cover of the rediscovered Beatrix Potter tale, illustrated by Quentin Blake.
Quentin Blake said: “It seemed almost incredible when, early in 2015, I was sent the manuscript of a story by Beatrix Potter; one which had lain unpublished for a hundred years and which, with the exception of a single drawing, she had never illustrated. I liked the story immediately – it’s full of incident and mischief and character –and I was fascinated to think that I was being asked to draw pictures for it. I have a strange feeling that it might have been waiting for me.”
Jo Hanks, publisher at Penguin Random House Children’s, said, ‘As soon as we began the conversation about finding an illustrator, we knew it had to be Quentin Blake. It’s a challenging brief to illustrate a manuscript written over a hundred years ago by one of the world’s most beloved authors, but we knew that Quentin’s energy, rebelliousness and humour were in keeping with Beatrix’s own artistic sensibilities and therefore exactly what this fantastic book called out for.’
Frederick Warne & Co. is publishing The Tale of Kitty-In-Boots in hardback on 1 September 2016, 150 years after Potter’s birth and just over a century after she penned the tale about the mischievous kitten.
Also announcing today, an exhibition of Quentin Blake’s original illustrations from The Tale of Kitty-In-Boots will open at House of Illustration in King’s Cross the day after the book is published on 2 September 2016. The exhibition will include 50 artworks, featuring classic Potter characters including Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Mr. Tod re-drawn by Blake.
