Innovation First Partners for Hexbug Apparel

Innovation First International, creators of the Hexbug brand, has partnered with Bioworld Merchandising, granting apparel licensing rights for Hexbug-branded T-shirts and sleepwear. The line is due to appear at select retailers in the U.S. this spring.
 
Innovation First’s Hexbug products are designed to give children a positive experience with robotics at a young age. Hexbug-branded apparel and sleepwear joins other licensing partnerships that the company has forged for 2014, including a partnership with Crocs to create Hexbug Jibbitz, decorative shoe charms that fit into the holes of Crocs shoes, as well as a new partnership for Transformers: Age of Extinction, in which Hexbug is bringing the iconic franchise characters to life for fans of all ages, with the Transformers Hexbug Warriors & Nano product lines.

C3 Entertainment Inc. Signs Celebrity Chef Jason Santos to Global Licensing Deal

C3 Entertainment now exclusively represents celebrity chef Jason Santos for worldwide licensing and merchandising. Initial offerings will include cookbooks and cookware, with additional opportunities available.
Jason Santos is an eccentric chef with electric blue hair from Gordon Ramsay’s TV series Hell’s Kitchen. He has frequently appearanced on CBS’ The Talk and The Early Show; The Today Show on NBC; and on New England TV stations. Santos is known for his inventive style, as evidenced by the cuisine and offerings at his three Boston-area restaurants. The presentations of Santos’ dishes are whimsical and inventive, and keep diners coming back for more. Santos’ cuisine combines Asian, French, and traditional American flavors with visual and textural twists.
Santos and his three restaurants—Back Bay Harry’s, Blue Inc., and Abby Lane—have been featured on the Phantom Gourmet show, in the Boston Globe, on the cover of Stuff Magazine, and in Zagat’s.

Chattanooga Bakery and Limestone Branch Distillery Offer MoonPie MoonShine

Chattanooga Bakery, maker of the snack food MoonPie, has paired with Beam family whiskey producers to create MoonPie MoonShine in a deal brokered by licensing agency Lisa Marks Associates Inc. (LMA).
Produced by Limestone Branch Distillery and set to launch this month, MoonPie MoonShine will be available in 750 ml. jars of small batch liquor enhanced with MoonPie’s authentic signature flavors, including chocolate, vanilla, and banana. Initial retail markets will include Kentucky, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, and southern Indiana, with accelerated distribution coming soon. A second MoonShine release this summer will extend the product line, capturing MoonPie’s strawberry, orange, and lemon flavors.
In addition to MoonPie MoonShine, the distillery produces SugarShine and Discovery Channel’s Moonshiners star Tim Smith’s Climax Moonshine. Limestone Branch will also debut a MoonPie Depot gift shop this spring in its distillery, located on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail craft tour, featuring its signature MoonPie Moonshine alongside a host of MoonPie-licensed products.

Activision Partners with Crayola, General Mills

Activision Publishing Inc. has lined up a roster of global licensees for its Skylanders franchise. New relationships with Crayola and General Mills will drive the expansion of the merchandising program into new categories. Activision’s licensing portfolio, featuring more than 175 licensees, is set to deliver meaningful brand extensions for the No. 1 kids’ video game franchise.
Activision and Crayola will introduce Skylanders-branded color and activity formats. The specialty line will include Crayola’s signature formats such as Color Wonder, Giant Coloring Pages, and Xtreme Coloring, and will be available this holiday season at top retail channels worldwide.
Starting in June, a new promotion with General Mills will release Skylanders-shaped fruit-flavored snacks in North America. The snacks will be available at grocery stores, supermarkets, drug stores, and mass-market retailers.
New and returning licensees will launch additional product assortments this year, including Power A with carrying cases and game accessories, Mad Dog Concepts with sleepwear, ABG Accessories with headwear and cold weather gear, Thermos with lunch kits and FUNtainers, FAB with backpacks and school supplies, PTI with Easter items, American Greetings with party goods and supplies, and Rubie’s Costume Co. with Halloween products.

CBS Consumer Products Launches New Categories for Star Trek

CBS Consumer Products will expand its Star Trek consumer products program into new categories. For the first time, fans will have new ways to engage with the brand with plush Star Trek golf accessories, office accessories, and souvenirs hitting retail this spring and summer.
Soft Stuff Creations will produce plush Star Trek golf club covers that will be available in April. Gary Gurmukh Sales will introduce a selection of souvenirs, including apparel, headwear, and giftware throughout Canada starting in April. Icon Heroes introduced its line of Star Trek office accessories at last week's American International Toy Fair. The company, along with A Crowded Coop, also introduced a line of bags and accessories at Toy Fair. The line, including cut-and-sew bags, messenger bags, backpacks, purses, coin purses, and more will be available at retail in July.
Other international Star Trek deals include 21 Trends Private Limited for T-shirts in India, Mitch Dowd men's outerwear, sleepwear, and underwear for Australia, and Lady Sandra Home Fashions Inc. for cuddle wraps and cozy wearable blankets in Canada.

PGS Entertainment Secures International Broadcast Deal with Nickelodeon for New Chipmunks Series

Nickelodeon will air the new CGI-animated series ALVINNN!!! and The Chipmunks on more than 70 Nickelodeon channels internationally (excluding North America and Brazil). The series, created by Janice Karman and produced by Bagdasarian Productions and OuiDO! Productions, has been picked up for two seasons (104 11-minute episodes) and will debut on Nickelodeon’s international channels early next year.  
The new series will mark the return of the franchise to TV after 20 years in CGI-animation that will offer a fresh look at the classic adventures of Alvin, Theodore, Simon, and the Chipettes. In addition, each new episode will feature a new, original song produced by Bagdasarian.  
PGS Entertainment represents the ALVINNN!!! and The Chipmunks TV series worldwide, excluding the U.S. and France. The series was commissioned by M6 in France.

Sprout Unveils New Series and Online Game

Sprout will premiere its newest series, Zerby Derby, on March 1 during The Sunny Side Up Show. The show is produced and distributed by Breakthrough Entertainment in association with TVO Kids. Sprout will support the launch of the series at SproutOnline.com with three new online games produced by Breakthrough Entertainment.

Genius Brands Produces New Adventure Series

Genius Brands International began producing and developing a new animated children’s series, Thomas Edison’s Secret Lab. The series is presented by Georgia Public Broadcasting, in partnership with the Edison Innovation Foundation. The series will feature adventure, comedy, and inspiration to foster creativity, imagination, and positive entrepreneurism.
The series will follow Angie, a 12-year-old prodigy in her young science club who discovers Thomas Edison’s secret lab. The lab includes a scientist’s dream lab equipped with Edison’s two latest inventions: a hologram that brings Edison to life and a robot called Von Bolt. There will be 52 11-minute episodes that demonstrate science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts.

Evolution Appointed Global Licensing Agency for Hannibal

Evolution has been appointed as the global licensing agency for Gaumont International Television and NBCUniversal’s TV series Hannibal.
The announcement was made by Travis J. Rutherford, president of licensing and retail development for Evolution; Kim Niemi, senior vice president, NBCUniversal Television Consumer Products Group; and Tim Farish, head of marketing for Gaumont International Television. 
Hannibal is from Gaumont International Television in association with Sony Pictures Television Networks. Evolution is proactively seeking manufacturing and retail partners to launch the brand in North America and Europe via key product categories, including apparel, accessories, fragrance, home furnishings, home decor, games, and collectibles.

Kidscreen Summit Shows Significant Growth

The 15th annual Kidscreen Summit drew a crowd of nearly 1,700 kids' entertainment professionals to New York earlier this month for four days of networking and professional learning.
Attendance overall was up by 10 percent over last year, and the biggest contributing factor was a 13 percent increase in delegates from the U.S. There were a greater number of participants from Africa (80 percent more), the Middle East (45 percent more) and Asia Pacific (10 percent more).
This last area of growth should prove to be important as Kidscreen prepares for the summer launch of Kidscreen East in Qingdao, China.

MEXICO AND LATIN AMERICA

Trump and PBF Sign for Signature Collection

The Trump Organization and Premium Brands Footwear (PBF) have formed a new partnership to produce men’s dress and casual shoes under the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection brand for distribution in Mexico. This offering will complement the global expansion efforts of the brand into Mexico and Latin America.

Trump Signature Collection brand into Mexico,” said Cathy Hoffman Glosser, Executive Vice President of Global Licensing. “PBF understands our commitment to brand excellence, providing the customer with enhanced wardrobe staples that exude and inspire the poise and confidence that has become synonymous with the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection brand.”

EUROPE

Atlantyca, Penny Market Sign Deal for Geronimo

Atlantyca Entertainment’s licensing division has signed a deal with Italian discount supermarket retailers Penny Market that will see the Geronimo Stilton classic characters in a seven-week special customer loyalty promotional campaign.
Customers will be rewarded with free Geronimo Stilton collectible sticker packs for every €10 they spend in 300 Penny Market stores located throughout Italy. In addition, a special collector’s sticker album will be available to buy exclusively at €2.49 or at €1.99 for Penny Card’s owners, featuring Geronimo Stilton.
Penny Market will support the promotion with some in-store branding and marketing in addition to a dedicated website page.
“We are so excited to have Penny Market as one of our newest Geronimo Stilton promotional partners,” noted Rachele Geraci, licensing manager, Atlantyca Entertainment. “This campaign complements the educational and entertainment character values that kids and their families have come to cherish about Geronimo Stilton.”

LIMA Awards Open for Entries

LIMA UK is appealing to the licensing industry to submit an entry for the 2014 Annual LIMA International Licensing Excellence Awards.  
Kelvyn Gardner, managing director of LIMA UK, commented: “In the last two years we have seen a record number of submissions from the UK, second only to the U.S., which clearly demonstrates that the UK licensing industry is punching above its weight. In 2013, some 25 UK companies had submissions win through for consideration by the Nominations Committee for final selection and 2012 saw a record five UK winners. The licensing industry in the UK is demonstrating growth and excellence, and these awards give companies clout on the global playing field. Plus, it's pretty cool to receive one of these prestigious awards at the ceremony in Las Vegas during the world's biggest licensing event.”
There are several categories to enter, including three new categories this year: celebrity, digital, and location-based or experiential licensee. Winners will be announced at the LIMA Awards Ceremony on Tuesday June 17 at Licensing Expo in Las Vegas.

The Red Harlequin Launches on Wattpad

The first book of The Red Harlequin series by Roberto Ricci, Of Masks and Chromes, launched on Wattpad this month, racking up more than 30,000 reads in two weeks, and reaching 12th place in the adventure/fantasy category. The successful Wattpad launch will be followed by the launch of a hip hop single, "Behind the Mask," on digital jukeboxes in March.
The Red Harlequin is a series of coming-of-age fantasy novels aimed at readers ages 12 to 18 in the The Hunger Games and Harry Potter demographic. The first two books of the series, Of Masks and Chromes and Kingdom of Deceit, have been completed, with the third book, Rise of the Harlequin, planned for fall. A new book with backstories of all the characters and Chrome Nations featured in The Red Harlequin is planned for release on an annual basis.
A conceptual music album based on The Red Harlequin, which combines contemporary hip hop sounds with a haunting fantasy feel evocative of the series’ dark themes, is in production and will launch this fall.

HarperCollins Acquires World Rights to Harry 'Shoutykid' Riddles Trilogy

HarperCollins Children’s Books has acquired a trilogy, Harry ‘Shoutykid’ Riddles, by debut author Simon Mayle.
Harriet Wilson, editorial director at HarperCollins Children’s Books, acquired world rights from Kate McLennan at AbnerStein.
Wilson said: “We snapped up Shoutykid because the hilarious voice of Harry Riddles shouted loud and clear that he was the funniest kid in fiction. You can’t help but fall for Harry—as his life unravels, he remains relentlessly optimistic and his genuine belief that the world’s luminaries might lend him a hand (or a tenner) is both moving and side-splittingly funny. Now that Harry has found his voice, you’re sure to be hearing a lot more from him.”

Baby Safety Campaign in Major Chinese Retailers

Major retailers in Beijing and Shanghai, including 17 department stores and 131 stores of leading toy and baby product retail chains, participated and started the promotion of Safety Commitment Campaign on Toys & Baby Products, to guide Chinese consumers to buy Safety Commitment brands and high-quality products.
Retailers such as Shin Kong Place, Yansha Youyi Shopping City, Parkson China, Cuiwei Group, Bao Da Xiang Shopping Center for Kids, Shanghai BaiLian Group, Toys "R" Us, Lijia Baby, and MAMA’s Goodbaby all took part.
Until now, 123 overseas and Chinese famous brands, including Mattel, Lego, Barbie, Transformers, Hot Wheels, Goodbaby, Silverlit, Yeehoo, Gigo, RASTAR, and Banbao have joined the campaign and pledged their commitment for producing safety and quality products in China.
Organized by China Toy and Juvenile Products Association (CTJPA) under the related Chinese government authorities, Safety Commitment Campaign on Toys & Baby Products aims to join Chinese and overseas leading enterprises making a commitment to promote the long-standing safety and quality of products sold to Chinese consumers, and help to publicize the participating companies and brands to media and consumers. The campaign was successfully launched in Beijing last March.
