The Board of Directors of Iconix Brand Group, Inc. has appointed John N. Haugh as president and a member of the board of directors effective February 23, 2016. Haugh will become CEO of Iconix on April 1, 2016. At that time, Interim CEO Peter Cuneo will transition to executive chairman of the Iconix board.

Haugh has more than 30 years of experience leading premier global brands and retail businesses at companies including Luxottica S.p.A., Build-A-Bear Workshop, and Mars Inc.

Viacom to Explore Strategic Investment Partnership for Paramount Pictures

Viacom Inc. has initiated a process to explore opportunities for a significant strategic minority equity investment in Paramount Pictures. The announcement was made today by at the Jefferies Media & Communications Conference in New York City.

“In this time of change and enormous opportunity in our industry, a partnership will bring significant benefit to Paramount and Viacom, both strategically and financially, provide new opportunities for Paramount’s employees and talent, and enhance long-term value for all Viacom shareholders,” says Philippe Dauman, Viacom’s executive chairman, president, and CEO.

Viacom has retained PJT Partners as its financial advisor to assist with the process.

Carla Silva Joins King Features as VP/GM, Global Head of Licensing

Carla Silva has been named to the new position of Vice President/General Manager, Global Head of Licensing for King Features.

Five Nights at Freddy’s Signs Five New Licensees

Five Nights at Freddy’s signed five new licensees, including Rubie’s Costume Co., NECA, Trends International, Buckle-Down, and McFarlane Toys.

Rubie’s Costume Co., along with its Morbid Industries and Forum divisions, will create Five Nights at Freddy’s character costumes, masks, costume accessories, prop replicas, animatronic figures, trick-or-treat bags, indoor and outdoor Halloween décor, pumpkin decorating kits, and pet costumes. 

NECA will create a line of large-scale foam figures, animatronic figures, electronic cord accessories, gift sets, seasonal lighting, 3-D figural wall art, role playing party games, novelty metal lunch boxes, fleece blankets, and character pillows. Trends International will launch Five-Nights-at-Freddy’s-themed posters, calendars, bookmarks, writing instruments, stickers, decals, temporary tattoos, gift-wrap, and gift bags. 

Buckle-Down will create a range of Five Nights at Freddy’s belts, buckles, and key chains featuring the signature Buckle-Down seat-belt-style fasteners. McFarlane Toys will launch a construction range of Five Nights at Freddy’s buildable play sets based on scenes from the game.

SPHE to Distribute GBI Kids Properties in North America

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) and Genius Brands International Inc. (GBI) have finalized a multi-year agreement to market and distribute GBI’s Kid Genius and Baby Genius labels in North America. Additionally, SPHE and GBI will co-develop, distribute, and merchandise future animated or live action properties worldwide.

SPHE will distribute SpacePOP set to debut in the fall, the original Baby Genius series (set to coincide with the brand’s extended launch), and Warren Buffett’s animated series Secret Millionaires Club, and Stan Lee's Mighty 7.

Kidscreen Achieves Further Growth in Miami

Representing a 5% year-on-year increase in registrations, Kidscreen Summit 2016 brought together nearly 1,800 attendees last week for four days of intense business networking and professional learning.

A bump in delegates from Australia (up 40%), the UK (up 15%) and North America (up 11%) contributed meaningfully to the event’s overall growth, as did a 32% rise in attendees working in the consumer products sector, and new delegations from countries such as South Africa and Colombia.

9 Story Media Group Licenses Nature Cat to DHX TV’s Family CHRGD in Canada

9 Story Media Group has licensed animated series Nature Cat to DHX TV’s kids channel Family CHRGD in Canada. The series premiered last November on PBS Kids in the U.S. and is expected to premiere on Family CHRGD this summer.

9 Story handles international distribution and consumer products outside the U.S., while HiHat Media handles brand licensing within the U.S.

The series follows the adventures of Nature Cat, a house cat eager to explore the outdoors with no instinct for nature, but with friends and curiosity by his side.  

Shopkins Season 4 Sales Success

Shopkins is seeing further with the recent launch of season four. This new launch has followed the trend of its predecessors, with sales significantly up on season three.
Season four features the Shopkins pets –Petkins, which come with their own pet bag. Season four also features new themes garden, party, pet shop and accessories. This adds to the hundreds of existing characters, which include ultra-rare, special edition and limited edition figures.
The statistics surrounding Shopkins are strong - more than 200 million characters have been sold, over 59 million views have been recorded on Shopkins YouTube channel and fan videos featuring Shopkins have recorded more than 360 million views.
This popularity has been replicated in the licensing world and Bulldog Licensing, representing the brand for United Kingdom and EIRE, has secured deals across multiple categories.

Puma Debuts Sesame Street Line for Spring/Summer

Puma partnered with Sesame Workshop to launch a kids’ footwear and apparel line inspired by Sesame Street. The Puma x Sesame Street collection includes footwear styles from the Puma archive in mini versions, available for boys and girls from ages 1 to 12 years.
The Puma Suede model comes in four renditions that feature Elmo, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, and Bert and Ernie. The Basket Classic model gets monsterized with the Basket Sesame Street Furry Kids, while the Puma Running classic ST Runner features googly eyes and friendly smiles. The apparel collection for boys and girls, from ages 2 to 12 years, includes tees, sweat pants, sweat jackets, crew sweats, bermudas, leggings, backpacks, play sacks, and water bottles.
The Puma x Sesame Street collection is available in Puma stores, online at, and at select kid’s stores worldwide. The next collection is set to launch in the fall.

Start Licensing to Represent Rachael Hale in the UK & Ireland

Start Licensing has been appointed by Dissero Brands to represent the Rachael Hale brand.
The brand comprises 2,500 distinctive and original photographs featuring dogs, cats, farm animals and exotics with universal appeal. It captures magical moments that delight and connect with all ages regardless of language or culture. It has a base of 130 licensees from over 50 countries.
Start Licensing are taking over the UK market of Rachael Hale from Richard Horton who has successfully managed it for a number of years but is now retiring. Richard leaves the brand in a strong position with licensees that include WPL for greeting cards, Danilo for calendars, Igloo Books for publishing, Noveltex for bedding, Funky Pigeon for personalised products, and Pyramid for posters.

DEMDACO Focuses on Single Band Identity

DEMDACO is set to transition to single-brand identity featuring quality, tailor-made products organized by categories similar to Target. DEMDACO will however continue its partnership with artist Susan Lordi to make hand-carved, figurative Willow Tree sculptures.
Retailers and consumers can now explore all DEMDACO products organized by categories such as gifts, home and entertainment, outdoors, fashion and jewelry, baby and kids, bath and Body, holidays, seasons, and celebrations.
This shift from previous branding allows for targeted product development in each category and effective product searching, planning, and purchasing.
DEMDACO launched a redesigned universal homepage on in line with its single-brand identity.

LIMA Event Mind Mix to Take Place in Berlin

Mind Mix, a one-of-a-kind LIMA event that brings all sides of the global licensing industry together will take place on May 11 - 12 in Berlin.

The Ninja Corp., Discovery Partner for Camping Line

The Ninja Corp., Discovery Consumer Products (DCP) partnered for a new line featuring camping tents and equipment for sleep and outdoor use.

The products will debut across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (excluding South Africa and Israel) under the Discovery Adventures brand, inspired by Discovery Channel and Animal Planet. The product line will debut with CleverBed, a sleeping bag that can turn into a bed, in May.

Next spring, The Ninja Corp. will also deliver a range of tents from two-person camping tents that use pop-up construction to inflatable four and six person tents designed to make camping fun, easy, and affordable. This line will hit stores starting next spring.

Aquarius Signs for Development of Yu-Gi-Oh!

4K Media Inc., the Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. subsidiary that manages the licensing and marketing of the Yu-Gi-Oh! brand,  has signed with Aquarius for the development of a Yu-Gi-Oh! branded specialty products line which will launch into retail by spring/summer 2016 in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. 
“Aquarius has been very successful in launching other popular IP product lines into the global marketplace, and we look forward to collaborating with them on fun product and designs that convey the style and uniqueness of the Yu-Gi-Oh! brand,” said Jennifer Coleman, Vice President of Licensing and Marketing for 4K Media, in announcing the licensing agreement.
Aquarius Entertainment will design puzzles, lunch boxes, die-cut chunky wood magnets, desk top standees and playing cards featuring the characters and designs based on artwork from the Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series. 
Yu-Gi-Oh! products produced by Aquarius will be distributed by its sister company, NMR Distribution, through specialty, mid-tier, mass and department stores in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand beginning in February 2016.

Ñañaritos Signs Vidorra Group as Exclusive Licensing Agency

Vidorra Group signed C-Mar Corp. to serve as exclusive global licensing agency for C-Mar’s Ñañaritos brand.

Ñañaritos is youth-oriented bilingual (English-Spanish) brand featuring stories, games, hand painted characters, and art and exhibited at Licensing Expo and Brand Licensing last year.

Ñañaritos is available to licensees in apparel, e-commerce, fashion accessories, jewelry, electronics accessories, plush, loungewear/sleepwear, hosiery, bedding, home décor, party goods, and dinnerware. Ñañaritos is also looking for a publishing agreement for its bilingual book series with the first book El Primer Ñañarito en la Tierra (The First Ñañarito on Earth) ready for print.

NY Toy Fair Reports a 16% Increase in Overall Attendance/ Play Fair Debut a Success

The best new toys, games and youth entertainment products made their New York City showing last week at the 113th North American International Toy Fair.
From February 13-16, the largest toy marketplace in the Western Hemisphere opened its doors to more than 30,600 global play professionals, a 16 percent increase from 2015. Owned and operated by the Toy Industry Association (TIA), Toy Fair 2016 boasted an expansive 415,000 net square feet of exhibit space at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, filled with hundreds of thousands of exciting, innovative new toys and games.
Buyers, exhibitors, entertainment executives, members of the press, and trade guests from across the U.S. and 92 countries arrived in Manhattan for the international toy and game event.
More than 1,200 exhibitors, importers, distributors and sales agents showcased their latest product lines and key drivers for holiday ’16 in front of 10,040 mass and specialty retail buyers, a 12 percent increase from a year ago. The top five countries represented by the most buyers were Canada, the U.K., Mexico, Japan and Australia.
“From total attendance to the volume of international buyers to news media attention, our exhibitors consistently reported Toy Fair 2016 was a success and one of the very best shows they attend,” said Steve Pasierb, TIA president and CEO. “The innovative and fun products displayed underscore the vitality of the toy industry and over the coming months through the holiday season will bring joy to the lives of millions of children and families. We expect the positivity, momentum and great range of products we saw on Toy Fair’s show floors to build upon the outstanding 6.7 percent sales growth the industry experienced in 2015.”
This year also featured the debut of Play Fair, which was co-hosted by TIA and LeftField Media in the Javits Center’s North hall on February 13 and 14. Capacity crowds of more than 20,000 attendees warmed up at the public celebration of play, which was presented by Nickelodeon and LEGO. Play Fair served as an arena for families to try out new toys, interact with popular characters like PJ Masks and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, play games, take photos and purchase new products.    

Laura Ashley Signs Cari Cucksey

Laura Ashley is collaborating with HGTV personality Cari Cucksey to engage new audiences and old followers with Do It Yourself (DIY) projects encapsulating social media and personal appearances.

Known for her TV series Cash & Cari, Cucksey helps her audience spot antiques and collectibles. Starting March, Laura Ashley and Cucksey will provide crafters and home decorating enthusiasts ideas for home improvement DIY projects.

LMCA Adds to New York Staff

LMCA announces that Donna M. Bruschi was appointed to the firm as director, brand licensing.  She will be located in the company’s New York headquarters and report to Alan Kravetz, company president.
Bruschi’s background has a deep base in international licensing of major brands, having senior level experience at Sony Pictures Consumer Products, DreamWorks Animation, and American Greetings Properties.

Talit Communications Israel Launches New Division/ Announces New VP

Talit Communications Israel has launched a new merchandising division
and appointed Miri Dalizky as VP.
In 2016 the new division will launch a range of products from the channels' brand characters, including apparel, publishing, merchandise, toiletries, out-door activity activities and more.
The new division is slated, amongst others, to increase the activities of the group's kid's channels, namely BabyTV and Junior channels and penetrate new markets and spheres on the Israeli domestic market.

Egmont Announces New Minecraft Titles

Egmont Publishing, the official publisher of Minecraft books, has announced two brand new Minecraft titles publishing this year. Minecraft: The Survivors’ Book of Secrets will publish in June with Minecraft: Exploded Builds following in October 2016.
Print runs for Egmont’s Minecraft titles currently top 8 million copies worldwide, selling in 41 markets and in 32 different languages.

Toei Animation Secures Licensing Deals Spanning Latin America

Toei Animation has secured a comprehensive licensing agreement with Pepsico in Latin America, alongside a series of retailer deals in Brazil and Chile for Dragon Ball and Saint Seiya.
In a deal spanning Central America and the Caribbean, Pepsico will release a special, collectors-edition Dragon Ball “Tazo” that will be included inside the bags of all of its major snack brands. Launched by Frito Lay in 1994, Tazos have become a phenomenon for collectors in Latin America.
At the same time, high-end retailers in Brazil and Chile will produce exclusive Dragon Ball and Saint Seiya items.  
“Latin America has always been a vital territory for our branding and licensing efforts,” said Masayuki Endo, President of Toei Animation Inc.  “We’re delighted to work with region’s top brands and retailers in bringing top-tier merchandise and collectibles to our vibrant fan community.”

Avec UK Signs for Beatrix Potter

Avec UK has been appointed the licensee for Beatrix Potter, and has already signed off an exclusive range to coincide with the 150th birthday this year.
In partnership with Hobbycraft the company has designed and developed a heritage cross-stitch hoop kit range. These hoop kits will be available in the UK in Hobbycraft stores from late summer 2016.
Avec has also partnered with Visage (The Cotton Company) to design and develop a range of fabrics for quilting. Visage will be the exclusive distributor of these fabrics to the independent trade.

Cepia Showcased Zhu Zhu Pets and Charm U at Toy Fair 2016

Cepia, the mastermind behind ZhuZhu Pets, debuted its all-new ZhuZhu Pets collection for 2016 and introduec Charm U and Mimi’s Secrets, two new collectible ranges. Cepia also unveiled its Big Robots lineup of battle-ready, motion remote-controlled fighting robots.

Painted Planet Announces Tamara Kate’s Adult Coloring Books

Artist Tamara Kate’s nature-inspired illustrations fill the pages of two recently published adult coloring books by Éccolo Ltd.  “The Artist’s Alphabet” and “Words of Wisdom” books were launched at the Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market in January. Each compilation features over 90 pages of hand-drawn designs, ranging in theme from whimsical monograms to inspiring typography. The coloring books will be sold at TJ Maxx stores and other retailers nationwide.
Trinidad-born Tamara Kate is represented by Painted Planet Licensing Group. Her art has been licensed for a wide variety of product categories, including fabric, ceramic tableware, gift and bath products. Painted Planet will exhibit Tamara’s artwork in addition to their other artists at the Surtex 2016 tradeshow held in New York City, May 15-17.
