The 13th annual Women in Toys, Licensing, and Entertainment (WIT) Gala hosted more than 600 industry executives and honored leaders in the toy industry.  
The 2017 Wonder Women Awards Winners include ZAG’s Andre Lake Mayer as Wonder Woman in Entertainment; Mattel’s Jennifer Bennett as Wonder Woman in Licensing; Jazwares’ Laura Zebersky as Wonder Woman in Manufacturing; and PlayMonster’s Lisa Wuennemann as Wonder Woman in Marketing. Six winners were also awarded the Wonder Woman Rising Star award, including JazWings’ Karen Kilpatrick; Disney’s Kathryn Hardy; The Toy Book/The Toy Insider’s Marissa DiBartolo; Hasbro’s Nikki Kennamer; Moose Toys’ Stephanie Haggery; and IAmElemental’s Julie Kerwin.
WIT also honored actress and activist Geena Davis with the Gamechanger Award, former chairman and CEO of Mattel Jill Barad with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and ChiTag founder Mary Couzin with the Elyse Lachowyn Mentorship Award.

Bernhard Haberfelner

The Bavaria Media team are mourning the loss of the long-standing director of the Bavaria Sonor Licensing division - Bernhard Haberfelner - who passed away on February 17 at the age of 52 after battling a serious illness.
Born in Austria, Bernhard went on to successfully complete his studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich and spent his initial professional years in adult education. In June 2005, he joined Bavaria Sonor as a sales manager and has headed the division since July 2007 as the company’s licensing director.
Bernhard Haberfelner not only experienced the heydays of the licensing industry, but also led the team confidently through difficult times and brought it back on track with the acquisition of the “emoji” license. With huge commitment, he built an international network of agents and was a respected expert in the industry. He not only had extensive expertise in the field of licensing, but also spoke excellent English, French, Italian, Greek and Arabic. He is survived by his wife Valerie and his son Leon.

Hasbro Named Global Master Toy Licensee for Moon And Me Preschool Series

Hasbro Inc. was named global master toy licensee by Sutikki, the new kids and family division of Bento Box Entertainment. The line of toys will be based on the new preschool series Moon and Me from Andrew Davenport’s Foundling Bird.
Inspired by tales of toys that come to life when nobody is looking, Moon and Me is the comical story of a special friendship between two characters from completely different worlds. Moon and Me will combine the latest production methods with traditional storytelling, comedy, and music to create a picture-book world.
Moon and Me will air on BBC’s CBeebies in the UK next year. Hasbro will launch the new line next year under its Playskool brand in the UK, with additional markets to follow as the series debuts worldwide.

UK Group Opens New Toy Stores

The Entertainer, the fastest growing multi-channel high street toy retailer in the UK, recently announced the opening of two new stores for Spring 2017 in Cornwall and Northampton.  These new shops will bring the toy retailer’s total number of UK outlets to 133, plus 9 located overseas.
The new stores will be amongst some of the company’s largest shops in its portfolio. To celebrate the two official store openings, there will be a Grand Opening Day with activities in store, special costume character appearances, in-store demos for the latest hot toys and special seasonal promotions. Each shop will also celebrate its Grand Opening with a special trolley dash for a local charity, details of which will be announced shortly.
Commenting on the growth of the new stores, The Entertainer’s Founder & Managing Director, Gary Grant said, “We have a solid footprint right across the UK on both the high street and in shopping centres. We are really excited to be expanding our retail base early on in 2017, and are particularly excited to be opening our first toy shop in Cornwall, which will be our furthest store west in the UK.”

Zag, Method Animation, Planeta Junior Partner for ZAG TV Series

Zag, Method Animation, and Planeta Junior (Planeta & DeAgostini Group) partnered for co-production on the development of five upcoming animated TV series under the Zag Heroez label.
The collaboration starts with two Zag Heroez animated series Power Players, which features a team of secret heroes formed by a boy and his toys, and Pixigirl, which tells the story of a super-heroine with the supernatural powers of Mother Nature who battles evil witches in New York.
Planeta Junior will manage the licensing program of the Zag Heroez properties, including Zak Storm in all Planeta Junior territories. Thanks to this new partnership and the success of Miraculous—Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir licensing program, Planeta Junior extended the partnership in consumer products with Zag in Southern, Central, and Eastern Europe.

New Westinghouse Brand Licensee

Southern Telecom of, NYC recently signed an agreement to become the Westinghouse brand licensee for a series of products, including corded/cordless phones;  audio products, such as home theater, boom boxes, headphones, sound bars and accessories such as chargers and cables in North America and select countries in Central/South America.  LMCA, Westinghouse’s global licensing agent, orchestrated the deal.
Perry Ayal president of Southern Telecom commented, “Westinghouse is an iconic brand that resonates with consumers in North America and Latin America.  It signifies quality, value, technology and dependability.” 
He added, “We are sure that our investment in the development of a high-end product line under the Westinghouse brand will generate significant returns for our company.”

Ray Uhlir, managing director of brand licensing at LMCA said, “We’re very excited to have engineered the partnership between Southern Telecom and Westinghouse.  The Westinghouse program continues to evolve and the license in these core categories will serve to pave the way for a broadening program of other important Westinghouse products in the near future.”
Uhlir added, “This company is the 33rd licensee we have brought to the roster in the $4 billion Westinghouse licensing program.

Folkmanis Debuts Classic Disney-Licensed Puppets

Folkmanis Puppets debuted its new Disney puppet collection at the North American International Toy Fair. The line includes a 22-inch tall Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Donald Duck, and a 22-inch long Pluto. The line was showcased at the North American International Toy Fair.

M-Zone Announcements

The-M-Zone, the brand management agency headed by Co-Presidents Melissa Segal and Jeffrey Fradin, recently announced new licensing partners for lifestyle brand lovethislife, now in its 4th year at Kohl’s. They have also been appointed licensing agent by Girl Rising, a global campaign for girls’ education and empowerment.

Jazwares, Hasbro Partner for New Collection of Nerf Products

Jazwares partnered with Nerf, in collaboration with Hasbro, to introduce a Nerf toy and accessory line that includes targets, tactical gear, storage, and more.
Jazwares will offer a variety of products to enhance the Nerf lifestyle and blaster play. In addition, Jazwares will also extend the Nerf Sports segment with indoor and outdoor sports and games. The Jazwares Nerf Collection will be available at major retailers this fall in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA).

Smiley to Promote Vittel Water

The Smiley Company has teamed up with Vittel to create an on-pack promotion to help promote the globally recognised water brand’s smaller format bottles in 2017.
The partnership will see Smiley’s icons feature on 33, 50, 75 cl and 1 litre bottles in a bid to boost sales and brand awareness. 130 million Smiley branded Vittel bottles will enter the Belgian, French, German, Russian and Swiss markets between February and October 2017.
This exclusive partnership will form part of Smiley’s 20th anniversary celebrations throughout 2017, when the brand will celebrate creating the world’s first digital Smileys in 1997. This landmark sparked a digital revolution that led to billions of Smileys being sent across the world and the birth of the world’s first emoticon-inspired lifestyle brand – SmileyWorld.
Speaking about the collaboration, Smiley CEO Nicolas Loufrani said, “A recent market research campaign that we conducted shows that Smiley packaging really helps to sell products. Smileys elevate on-shelf stand out, improve positive the perception of products and increase purchase intent. These key USP’s will help boost Vittel’s presence in the smaller format market. We have created a range of different and exclusive Smileys to help Vittel position its different formats that include themes aligned to a variety of key consumers being targeted by Vittel, that include kids, fitness, work and lifestyle.”

As well as the on-pack promotion, both brands will collaborate on a wide range of marketing activations that will include digital billboard advertising in key retails sites, catalogue advertising in key supermarket chains and an al encompassing social media campaign with a range of exciting video adverts.

Lego Debuts DC Super Hero Girls Line 

Lego Systems Inc. introduced its collection of building sets inspired by the popular DC Super Hero Girls series at the North American International Toy Fair. In addition to the three building sets that launched in November, Lego introduced three mission-based building sets that are now available, with four more that will launch this August. 
DC Super Hero Girls provides children with a relatable world filled with aspirational characters, stories, and missions that inspires kids to be everyday superheroes. Centered around the heroes and villains as they learn to harness their super powers at Super Hero High, the Lego DC Super Hero Girls collection features 11 DC Super Hero Girls characters in Lego form, including Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Bumblebee, Flash, Eclipso, Lena Luther, Lashina, and Mad Harriet.

Breyer to Introduce DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free Toy Line This Summer

Breyer Animal Creations was named specialty toy licensee for the new DreamWorks Animation Television series DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free. Breyer debuted the new line at the North American International Toy Fair this week.
The Netflix original series DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free will launch exclusively on May 5. Inspired by the 2002 film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, the reimagined story follows Lucky, a gutsy 12yearold girl who befriends a wild mustang she names Spirit. With her two best friends and their horses by her side, they explore a world filled with endless rides, magnificent horses, and never-ending fun.
Breyer will create a line of model horses, dolls, accessories, and craft activity sets for DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free. The collection will be available at specialty retail this June.

Rovio Appoints Brand & Deliver

Global games, animation and entertainment giant Rovio, creator of Angry Birds, has appointed Brand & Deliver to secure worldwide brand partnerships throughout 2017 and 2018. 
Last year, Rovio’s Angry Birds Movie went straight to No.1 at the box office in 52 countries and catapulted the Angry Birds franchise to new heights. Brand & Deliver will build on the success of this lead IP alongside new characters and brands, offering a multi-platform solution for partners including the use of IPs in marcomms, as well as media exposure within the Rovio games portfolio and their online platform.
Ros Carmoody, Partnerships Director at entertainment marketing specialists Brand & Deliver, said, “Increasingly we’re being briefed to create global partnership solutions for brands. Cra-Z-Art Announces Licensing Deal for BeatMoovz

Cra-Z-Art partnered with Japan-based Dmet Properties to market and distribute BeatMoovz in the U.S. The announcement was made this week at the North American International Toy Fair.
BeatMoovz includes two wristbands that users wear to enable the device to play music and special effect sounds. Using the compatible app, kids can move, dance, and create musical beats.
BeatMoovz is expected to launch at major retailers this August. Global patent is pending.

Condé Nast, Schumacher Partner for Fabric and Wallpaper Line

Condé Nast partnered with Schumacher for a fabric and wallpaper collection, which will be launched under the Vogue Living brand this August.
The collection will consist of approximately 50 products and will include designs inspired by the Vogue archives. The line will be sold through interior designers and architects, online at, and through Schumacher showrooms and designated Schumacher agents.

Kidz Bop, Live Nation Announce Best Time Ever Tour

Kidz Bop partnered with Live Nation Entertainment to announce the Best Time Ever tour, sponsored by Juicy Juice Splashers. The live tour will debut in April and will reach more than 50 cities in the U.S., including Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami. The tour launched with an exclusive pre-sale on Feb. 22 for Kidz Bop social media fans. 
Tickets for the tour will go on sale to the public on Feb. 24. Special VIP tickets, which include a Best Time Ever private party, exclusive merchandise, and a meet and greet with the Kidz Bop Kids will also be available. Sears, Permasteel Enter Licensing Agreement for Kenmore Grills and Accessories

Sears Brands Management Corp. signed a licensing agreement with Permasteel Inc. to manufacture Kenmore and Kenmore Elite gas grills, grill covers, and accessories for distribution at retailers nationwide. It is the company’s first step toward licensing the brand in the U.S. and internationally. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

  • Manage existing licensees in assigned categories: 
    • Evaluate licensee’s quarterly marketing, retail and financial forecasts to ensure licensees on are track to meet established contractual obligations, royalty payments and forecast goals.
    • Organize and run licensee orientations, business reviews, semiannual/quarterly line reviews, and brain storm sessions.
    • Address specific licensee performance issues
    • Negotiate renewals on a timely basis
    • Provides input for annual departmental budget and plan
  • Ensure licensees develop seasonal lines in time for internal seasonal review and develop documents and presentations to communicate licensee’s initiatives to internal Crayola departments
    • Set trend direction and make recommendations for new product entry
    • Direct category research and product concept testing as needed with the consumer insights team
    • Work with creative and product development on design and creative direction for licensed product and packaging
    • Responsible for managing licensee press releases, cross marketing and promotions
    • Ensure adherence to internal approval process (i.e. safety, quality, financial, legal, content, creative, consumer activation, consumer affairs etc.) and assist in resolving issues.
  • Negotiate new licensed strategic partnerships for assigned segments in conjunction with established category strategies
    • Research, secure and develop new licensees building upon the success of existing segments in order to achieve predictable, profitable and sustainable growth
    • Negotiate deal terms including: grant of rights, royalty rates, guarantees, projections and business plans
  • 7 years’ experience in licensing or consumer marketing work for a CPG company.

I have 8 years experience of working for a large London Publishing house licensing book content to third parties. I am looking for a role which utilises my skills in negotiation and relationship building and can develop my experience within the licensing field. Having licensed book content to a wide variety of customers from national Newspapers to international Publishers I would relish the experience to work in a new industry, licensing new content to new clients.
I realise that a move across from traditional publishing may mean a step down from the managerial role I was in before. I'm enthusiastic to work in a new industry and feel my skills are easily transferable and am happy to look outside licensing roles also.
