Jakks Pacific Signs on for Minions

Jakks Pacific Inc. has been granted the rights to manufacture, market, and distribute a line of consumer products based on the Minions from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me franchise, as well as their upcoming film, Minions, which arrives in theaters this July. The licensing agreement, awarded by Universal Partnerships & Licensing, covers non-articulated figural storage containers, inflatable ball pits, wagons, arcade games, The Original Big Wheel, and outdoor children’s furniture. These products are expected to launch at North American retailers this spring.

Scholastic Prepares Licensing Program for Goosebumps Movie

GoosebumpsScholastic will celebrate the October release of the Goosebumps movie with a collection of new licensed products, including T-shirts, costumes, video games, and novelty toys. More than a dozen licensees have signed on to produce Goosebumps products in advance of the film from Sony Pictures Entertainment.
As the licensing agent for the brand, Scholastic Media is working with Sony Pictures Consumer Products to assemble a range of Goosebumps movie licensees in an extensive list of product categories. New partners include Berkshire for headwear, footwear, rain gear, winter accessories, and socks; C-Life for T-shirts, fleece, and thermal tops; for pre-paid payment cards; Cosmic Forces for mobile games; Cotton On for T-shirts and stationery; GameMill Entertainment for PC/video and online games; GB Eye for posters and novelty; Katalyst for stationery and novelty items; Outset Media Corp. for board, activity, and card games; Rasta Imposta for Halloween costumes; SG Companies for kids’ sleepwear and slippers; SRM Idea Lab for novelties such as  light/sound slammers, slap bracelets, flashlights, plush sound gloves, book lights, lenticular bookmarks, sound machines, compound toys, and plush; and Trends International for posters and bookmarks.
In addition, Scholastic Audio will produce audio books based on the Goosebumps film, while Scholastic’s Trade book publishing division will introduce five new movie tie-in titles.

Spin Master Named Master Toy Partner for Powerpuff Girls

Power Puff GirlsCartoon Network announced Spin Master, Ltd. will serve as the global master toy partner for The Powerpuff Girls, anchoring the licensing program for the highly anticipated global franchise launch set for 2016. Through the deal, which expands the two companies’ long-standing relationship, Spin Master will have rights to create a full line of products based on the brand, including plush, figures and playsets, dolls, and role play, select electronic, activity and remote control toys, and novelty and impulse items. The product will begin its global retail rollout beginning in fall 2016.
With an all-new animated series produced by Cartoon Network Studios and a full worldwide licensing program, The Powerpuff Girls franchise launch will introduce a new generation of fans to the brand. The Powerpuff Girls licensing program is one of Cartoon Network’s top-grossing franchises ever, with more than $2.5 billion in retail sales generated since its debut, and it continues to inspire as a global fashion brand with numerous apparel partners and fashion collections around the world.

Mattel Expands Mega Bloks Construction Portfolio with Leading Properties

Mattel has entered new partnerships to expand its Mega Bloks construction portfolio. Mega Bloks will broaden its current product offerings which include brands such as Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants and Microsoft’s Halo, to add new highly detailed sets and movie-inspired lines for fans of all ages. 
A new Mega Bloks Power Rangers line will debut next year, inspired by the newest season of the franchise, Power Rangers Dino Charge, which premiered this month on Nickelodeon in the U.S. and will roll out globally throughout the year.
The Mega Bloks Nickelodeon licensing partnership will also introduce new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles construction sets next year. The sets will draw inspiration from the franchise to offer creative building experiences, including builders from the juniors, kids, and collectors categories.
The Collectors portfolio will also broaden this year, as Mega Bloks partners with Skydance Productions to produce Terminator Genisys collector construction sets, themed to the reset of the Terminator movies. The film will be distributed by Paramount Pictures this summer. Mega Bloks has also expanded its licensing partnership with CBS Consumer Products to introduce a Mega Bloks Star Trek limited-edition Collectors construction set, to launch next year. 

Lego Overtakes Ferrari as the World’s Most Powerful Brand

Lego has surpassed Ferrari as the world’s most powerful brand, according to brand valuation and strategy consultancy Brand Finance. It scores highly on a variety of measures on Brand Finance’s Brand Strength Index, such as familiarity, loyalty, promotion, staff satisfaction, and corporate reputation. The Lego Movie illustrated the brand’s cross-generational appeal, and was a critical and commercial success, taking in nearly $500 million since its release last year.
The world’s 10 most powerful brands are Lego, PWC, Red Bull, McKinsey, Unilever, L’Oréal, Burberry, Rolex, Ferrari, and Nike.
Brand Finance combines the information on a brand’s strength with financial data to calculate its commercial value and growth. Apple is No. 1 in brand values, while Twitter is the fastest growing brand. The world’s most valuable brands are Apple, Samsung, Google, Microsoft, Verizon, AT&T,, General Electric, China Mobile, and Walmart. The world’s fastest growing brands are Twitter, Baidu, Facebook, Chipotle, Humana,, Alibaba, Lego, China Merchants Bank, and HCL.

Pillow Pets, VeggieTales Partner for Plush, Nightlights

Veggie Tales Pillow PetsCJ Products, the creator of Pillow Pets foldable plush, will create a line of plush products featuring characters from the animated series VeggieTales In The House. Fans of the series can cuddle up with an 18-inch plush Larry the Cucumber or Bob the Tomato, while uniquely shaped illuminating Dream Lites of Bob and Larry brighten kids’ rooms.
VeggieTales Pillow Pets and Pillow Pets Dream Lites will be available this year on and at select retail stores nationwide.

Jelly Jam, Kids Preferred Set to Launch The Moodsters

moodstersDenise Daniels, founder of Jelly Jam Entertainment, has partnered with Kids Preferred to launch The Moodsters, a new line of toys and books designed to teach kids the fundamentals of feelings. The brand will launch at a major retailers nationwide in August.
The Moodsters are five lovable detectives that come to the rescue whenever their friends, Zach and Zoey, have a feelings emergency. The stories and toys teach simple strategies to build social and emotional intelligence skills in kids. The initial launch will feature three items: the Moodster Meter, which helps kids express their emotions; the Feelings Flashlight, which helps kids process and understand their emotions; and the Moodster Mirror, which helps kids recognize their feelings and non-verbal cues. Each product will include a 32-page storybook.

Alex Brands Signs on with Nickelodeon

Alex Brands has signed a licensing agreement with Nickelodeon to manufacture, distribute, and market products based on characters including SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora and Friends, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Alex Brands includes Alex Toys, Poof Slinky, Scientific Explorer, Ideal, Zoob, Backyard Safari, Zillions, Citiblocs, and Shrinky Dinks.
The multi-year agreement covers multiple brands from Alex Brands, and product categories such as craft kits and bath toys. Alex Brands will launch more than 30 new Nickelodeon products at Toy Fair. The items will be available to consumers this summer.

iStory, DQ Entertainment Produce Peg Heads TV Series

iStorySM Animation Studios has signed an agreement with DQ Entertainment to develop and produce a 52 episode x 11 minute Peg Heads CGI-animated series that will be proposed to international broadcasters. The characters will also be available as a line of toys that are compatible with Laser Pegs.

The Peg Heads story line is based on three characters that endeavor to “light up” the world with their plug-and-play illuminated body parts and add-on accessories.

Nelvana, Cepia to Bring Back ZhuZhu Pets with TV Series, Toys

Nelvana has entered a partnership with Cepia LLC to bring ZhuZhu Pets back to store shelves, and will see Nelvana Studio produce a new animated series based on the property. Nelvana Enterprises will also oversee global merchandising of the brand in conjunction with the distribution of the new series.
Cepia will reintroduce the original “fab four” hamster toys, which have been refreshed with a new look, this fall. Mr. Squiggles, Pipsqueak, NumNums, and Chunk will sport renewed features that enhance their realistic qualities and add personality. The range will also introduce an additional two new characters: pink and white Jilly and lavender-colored Tulip.

Saban Brands, Fisher-Price Partner for Power Rangers Imaginext Line

Power Rangers Saban Brands and Fisher-Price will launch a line of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Imaginext preschool toys. The new line will include a range of figures, villains, weapons, Zords, and a giant Megazord with multiple levels of play and eight points of articulation. The Megazord features a disc launcher, a Ranger elevator, a Command Center, and a villain jail. The products will be available exclusively at Toys “R” Us stores nationwide beginning in May, followed by a global rollout to additional retailers later in the year.
Additionally, Saban and Bendon Inc. have partnered for a new Power Rangers Dino Charge line of coloring and activity books, stickers, puzzles, and more. The products will launch this month at retailers including Hobby Lobby, Rite Aid, and Dollar Tree.

Discovery Consumer Products Partners with Bioworld for Apparel

Shark Week Apparel Discovery Consumer Products partnered up with Bioworld Merchandising for tops and T-shirts based on series from the Discovery Communications portfolio, including Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, and more. Bioworld will present its trend-driven fashion tops and more inspired by Discovery’s content and characters at MAGIC this week at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
At launch, Bioworld will debut lines of fashion apparel tops, sleepwear, headwear, and bags for series including Moonshiners, Fast ‘N Loud, Shark Week, Naked and Afraid, My Cat From Hell, and more. Some of the first lines offered will feature Alaska: The Last Frontier, Gold Rush, Mythbusters, and River Monsters.
The deal with Bioworld is limited to North America and does not include network-branded apparel.

ITV Unveils Digital Developments for Thunderbirds Are Go

Thunderbirds are goITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVS GE) has unveiled new digital developments for the upcoming boys’ action adventure series Thunderbirds Are Go ahead of the series’ broadcast debut this spring.
In partnership with Pukeko Pictures, the co-producer of Thunderbirds Are Go, ITVS GE and BeyondTheStory will produce a new digital app that will support the upcoming TV series. The app will give fans of all ages the opportunity to extend their viewing experience while also encouraging younger players to learn and read.
ITVS GE and Pukeko Pictures produce Thunderbirds Are Go using a unique mixture of CGI animation and live-action miniatures. The new series aims to bring the Thunderbirds brand to a new generation of children ages 5 to 11 and to a new international audience.

Marvel Fashion Gets Boost with Heroic Apparel Program

Disney Consumer Products (DCP) will expand Marvel’s apparel program into sportswear and other areas of fashion, including a new apparel subscription service that will bring Marvel styles straight to the consumer.
Marvel fashion offerings will include lifestyle and sportswear apparel for fans of all ages. The program will kick off with apparel for Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron, from partners Mad Engine, Hybrid, and C-Life, who will debut lines at MAGIC this month featuring some of the biggest icons in the Marvel superhero library. The clothing lines will include woven tops, knit bottoms, outerwear jackets, and more.
In the spring, a collaboration between Marvel and the Five Four Club will introduce Marvel design inspiration to men’s apparel, including blazers, button-down shirts, shorts, and more through the online monthly fashion subscription service.

MFA to Release Peanuts Clocks and Nightlights

Mark Feldstein & Associates (MFA) has partnered with Peanuts Worldwide LLC to produce a series of licensed Peanuts 8-inch wall/desktop sound clocks, alarm clocks, cuckoo clocks, and LED nightlights. This release coincides with the Peanuts 65th anniversary this year, and the November premiere of the 3-D computer-animated film, The Peanuts Movie—the first feature film based on the beloved characters in 35 years.
MFA’s Peanuts sound clocks and nightlights will feature Peanuts characters, including Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, and Linus on colorful clock dials and nightlight frames respectively; the 8-inch Peanuts Christmas clocks add ambiance to the festive occasion by playing one of 12 traditional Christmas carols at the top of every hour; the Peanuts alarm clocks wake up users with the “Linus and Lucy” song each morning; the colorful Peanuts Christmas cuckoo clock features Snoopy coming out through the attic doors each hour and plays the “Linus and Lucy” song;  and the 5-inch Peanuts LED nightlights are long-lasting and feature a light sensor that automatically turns them on when room is dark.

Legendary Signs Jakks Pacific for the Theatrical Release of Warcraft

Legendary will bring Warcraft to the big screen with the live-action feature film Warcraft. Jakks Pacific Inc. has secured the master toy license for the release, which hits theaters next March. The agreement grants Jakks the rights to manufacture, distribute, and market action figures in all scales, basic and feature plush, play sets, role-play items, and Halloween costumes and accessories. The line is based on Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft universe, which includes the multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft.
Jakks will launch its Warcraft product line early next year at retailers nationwide to coincide with the March 11 release of the feature film.

Outfit7 Offers New Talking Tom and Friends Animated Series

Outfit 7Outfit7 Ltd. Announces its new 3-D, CGI-animated series Talking Tom and Friends.
The Talking Tom and Friends brand has achieved more than 2 billion mobile downloads and 1.4 billion YouTube views in four years. The new series chronicles the adventures, hijinks, and inventions of Talking Tom and the gang as they shoot their own reality TV show. Armed with cameras, tech gear, loads of ideas, and a sense of optimism, Tom and his friends make their own show from Tom’s garage/app studio. Fans and social media followers got a sneak peek of the series in late December when the company launched the prelude episode.
Talking Tom and Friends is produced by arx anima animation studios and developed by Samo Login, Boris Dolenc, and Tom Martin. Login and Dolenc will also serve as executive producers for Outfit7, while Kris Staber will executive produce for arx anima.

Delicious of New York Rebrands Division, Unveils New Website and Logo

Delicious of New York, a division of Rubie’s Costume Co., introduces the 2015 Delicious of New York Collection, which will include higher-end costumes and more mass-appealing characters that customers know with Rubie’s. The new rebranding efforts will also include the introduction of high-end licensed products, such as Super Girl, Bat Girl, Harley Quinn, and Wonder Woman.
Delicious will execute designs that will be packaged in garment bags to showcase their intricate detailing and plush fabrics. Moving forward, all Delicious products will be available under Rubie’s discount programs.

In addition, Delicious has unveiled a revamped website and logo. The new logo conveys a more modern interpretation of the brand's identity, and the user-friendly website features the entire costume collection along with company news, upcoming events, sizing charts, and industry trends.

Magic Cards from Cartamundi

cartamundiCartamundi, one of the world’s market leaders in playing cards and card games, has announced the arrival in late 2015 of its new series of cards dedicated to magic card tricks.
The range — under the name Carta Magic — was developed in collaboration with a professional magician and offers four collections of cards and special tokens with varying numbers of tricks for children and adults from age eight upwards. Every pack contains full instructions on a variety of tricks including mind reading, card finding, making things disappear, prediction, name and number guessing, speed reading and more, all offered in rising levels of difficulty.
International retail interest in the Carta Magic range is already strong, as a French version of the concept has proved highly successful in 2014. The enormous popularity of magic shows on television and stage should ensure a strong consumer interest in the range, especially with a planned launch date in the run-up to Christmas 2015.

Interactive Licensee for Teletubbies

TeletubiesDHX Brands has appointed VTech as licensee for interactive electronic toys (ELAs) for Teletubbies, with product set to roll out from Autumn/Winter 2016 in the UK, followed by the core European territories, France, Germany, Benelux, Iberia and Australia and New Zealand.
Teletubbies is one of the most successful children’s brands and one of the Best Children’s TV Programmes of the last 50 years, as voted by international kids’ television experts at the 2014 Prix Jeunesse International. The original episodes aired in more than 120 territories and its enduring resonance is underscored by the brand’s postings on YouTube, which averages more than 50 million views per month.
The new 60-episode series of Teletubbies has been commissioned by the UK’s CBeebies and is being produced for DHX Media by UK production company, Darrall Macqueen Ltd. It will feature the same much-loved characters but will bring a refreshed, contemporary look to one of the world’s most well-known pre-school properties. 
Over 20 new licensees have been signed to date including Worlds Apart (Furniture & Accessories), Aykroyds (Nightwear and Underwear), Character World (Bedding), Amscan (Partyware), Bon Bon Buddies (Confectionary), Posh Paws (Bags) GB Eye (Posters) and Zak UK (melamine tableware).

Publishing Deal for London Taxi Company

UK publisher, IglooBooks has signed a new worldwide rights agreement with Bulldog Licensing and The London Taxi Company - the only manufacturer and retailer of the world-famous Black Cab. The deal will see IglooBooks become the exclusive publishing partner of the ubiquitous brand for the next three years.
The new range of London Taxi books will encompass an array of formats - from book and gift sets to coloring books and interactive novelty titles, such as the Whizzy Play Track: a wind-up London Taxi toy which can be whizzed around a car track converted from the book’s foldable back cover. 
The first products in the range will be aimed at the children’s market and are due to be launch in August 2015, with further titles for adult audiences to be released in the coming year.
“This is great news” says Bulldog Group MD Rob Corney.  “IglooBooks is the perfect publishing partner for this iconic brand, and with their knowledge of the industry and strong array of formats, we are sure that this will be a successful partnership on a global scale.”

New Agents for Doozers

doozersThe Jim Henson Company has licensed Parents Choice Gold Award-winner Doozers—the CG-animated preschool series inspired by the characters from the company’s classic series Fraggle Rock—to leading media partners around the world. Additionally, licensing agents have been appointed in key global markets. 
Kicking off its roster of new agreements, the company has partnered in Europe with leading media platforms, including France Télévisions (France), RTVE for Clan (Spain), Dreamia (Portugal), and AMC Networks International for Canal Panda (Spain); and has also signed with German home video distribution company Polyband, who will distribute Doozers DVDs in German-language markets.
In New Zealand, Doozers will air on TV New Zealand, and has been licensed to MediaCorp (Malaysia and Singapore) for its Okto Channel.
In Israel, children’s channel HOP! will be the new home of Doozers, while in the Middle East, the series will be available on Radio Television Brunei and on Emirates Cable TV & Multimedia LLC’s E-Junior (UAE).
Rounding out Doozers news, the Company has appointed consumer products licensing agencies for the brand, including Biplano (France, Spain and Portugal), Active Merchandising International (Germany), Distefano Licensing (Italy), and The Fusion Agency (Australia).    
Doozers, which debuted in April 2014 in the U.S. as the first Hulu Original series for kids, first launched in the UK on Cartoonito, in Germany on Boomerang, in Italy on Boing, on Discovery Kids Latin America, Nick Jr. Australia and Cartoon Network Asia.

Egmont Appoints New Rights Director

Egmont Publishing UK appoints Tracy Phillips to the new role of Rights Director, sitting on the Egmont Publishing Books management team and reporting directly into Cally Poplak, Books MD. 

Phillips joins Egmont following senior positions at Simon & Schuster and Macmillan. Currently Group Rights Director at Simon & Schuster, Phillips is responsible for global co-edition and rights sales across the entire adult and children’s list, including the US illustrated children’s list plus book club and door-to-door sales for the children’s list.  Phillips has been in her current role for six years and was previously Group Rights Director at Macmillan Children’s Books where she oversaw massive growth in both rights and co-edition revenue and profit over a 14 year period.  She licensed The Gruffalo to the stage, screen and in over 35 languages during her time there. 
Cally Poplak, MD of Egmont Publishing UK and the Books division said, ‘Growing our rights and co-edition business across Fiction, Picture Books, Non-fiction and Licensing is a key focus for Egmont, and I am delighted to have Tracy join us, with her passion for Children’s publishing and her outstanding reputation.’

Penguin Ventures Sign First Licensees to Its Vintage Collection

lady birdLadybird Books is celebrating its centenary throughout 2015 and Penguin has capitalized on this moment and the huge affection held by the British public for the book brand to launch the official licensing program.
“The Penguin Ventures team has long been aware of the huge potential for a ranged of licensed product utilizing the original illustrations from the Ladybird Books archive.  We knew that there was an incredibly unique opportunity with this resource and we were keen from the outset to work with licensees that share our vision to reimagine the nostalgic heritage of vintage Ladybird Books as a long term, well-loved brand,” said Damian Treece, Brand Manager at Penguin Ventures.
The brand’s authentic provenance in illustration and iconic design form the basis of the creative direction for the Vintage Collection.  Elements from the most iconic illustrations from the ‘golden era’ of Ladybird Books, spanning the late 1950s to the 1970s have been utilized in a fresh style guide and cover a range of themes from the work place to domestic settings, from make-and-do crafts to international travel.  The Vintage Collection captures a very nostalgic British view of life that will appeal to adults who grew up with the original Ladybird books as well as design-conscious consumers.
The first products to be available in the Vintage Collection include greeting cards from Kiss Me Kwik, prints and canvases from King & McGaw, dated stationery from Portico and wooden postcards from The Wooden Postcard Company, which are all available now; mugs and tea towels from W2 will launch in March, a range of adult retro games, jigsaws and kits from The Lagoon Group will launch in September and a further stationery and gift range from Portico will be available in the summer of 2015.  There is also a range of vintage titles being published by Ladybird Books throughout 2015.


Fox Appoints Merchantwise for Australia

Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products have announced the appointment of Merchantwise as its new licensing agent in key territories of Australia and New Zealand.
Merchantwise will continue to grow the licensing business for Fox Consumer Products’ portfolio of strong TV and film brands including The Simpsons, Family Guy, Sons of Anarchy, Ice Age, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Avatar, among others.
