  BBC Children's, FME's Kids & Family Entertainment Division Sign Five-Year Deal

BBC Children's and FremantleMedia Enterprises' (FME) Kids & Family Entertainment division have signed a five-year deal to develop and produce a sequence of new children's TV programs for CBBC and CBeebies. Under the terms of the partnership, the BBC Children's in-house production teams will produce the shows in conjunction with the FME Kids & Family team, including President Sander Schwartz and Executive Vice President Bob Higgins.

The new partnership will include a second season of Tree Fu Tom. Allowing each viewer to become a mighty, magical superhero in this miniature fantasy world, Tree Fu Tom was developed to aid children who have movement disorders and difficulties such as Dyspraxia.

Extending beyond television screens, the deal will also see FME representing a range of global ancillary rights, including merchandise, home entertainment, live events, publishing, worldwide distribution, and more. BBC will retain television rights for the UK and Eire, as well as certain other rights within those countries.

  Lawless Appointed U.S. and Canadian Representative for Olive the Ostrich

Lawless Entertainment has been appointed as the U.S. and Canadian representatives for licensing and merchandising for the UK series Olive the Ostrich, which is produced and owned by Blue Zoo Productions Ltd.

Olive is an ostrich who lives in the outback with her family. Olive has a big imagination, a huge heart, and a gigantic appetite for adventure, so while her family is running, pecking, and laying eggs, Olive can be found imagining herself going on exciting adventures when she buries her head in the sand.

Olive the Ostrich debuted in the U.S. on PBS Sprout last year and is currently shown in Australia, Denmark, the UK, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Benelux, France, Poland, Canada, and Israel. In each episode, animators bring to life real pictures drawn by children. The children's artwork is used to create all the guest characters, places, and objects that Olive encounters.

  Aardman Rights Signs with Blues Clothing for Canimals Apparel

Aardman Rights has signed a deal with Blues Clothing for a range of kids' character clothing featuring the Canimals characters. The new apparel lines will launch in the fall and winter of this year and the spring and summer of next year at fashion retailers across the UK and Eire. The new clothing collection includes leisurewear, underwear, nightwear, and swimwear for girls.

The licensing team has also signed Rudolf Stein who will create jewelry and hair accessories for launch in the spring and summer of next year.

  Laser Pegs Partners with NFL for New Line of Pegs

Laser Pegs, the company behind the building blocks and shapes that light up when connected to a Laser Peg power source, is teaming up with the NFL for a line of kits that will teach children about the various aspects of football. Kids will be able to construct various positions such as a wide receiver, lineman, and quarterback. Each kit will come with two sheets of team logos. Kids can also build stadiums, scoreboards, snap shots of plays, and more.

In addition to the NFL line, Laser Pegs will be launching its new app at the American International Toy Fair. Users will be able to integrate features of the app with the physical Laser Pegs toys. The app will provide children with a blueprint so that they can build 3-D models using their Laser Pegs. The app also includes coloring pages, games, and sharing features.

  Bulldog Announces New Life-Branded Bag Range

Bulldog Licensing has signed an agreement with Benchmark for a range of Life-branded bags. Benchmark will develop a complete range of products, including messenger bags, beach bags, overnight bags, and holdalls. The initial range is available to view on the Benchmark stand at Spring Fair.

  41 Entertainment Signs with K'nex, Burger King for Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures

41 Entertainment has granted a license to K'nex Brands to create a new line of building toys for the Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures property worldwide, excluding Japan. The 26 x 22-minute episode TV series is slated to begin broadcast in the fall. The 2013 K'nex Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures product line includes Mystery Figure Packs, Maze Assortments, and the Ghost Regeneration Chamber/Power Pellet Tree Assortment. The K'nex products will feature characters including Cylindria, Spiral, Inky, Blinky, Pinky, Clyde, and Pac, bringing them to the construction aisle for the first time.

41 Entertainment has also entered into a global promotion with Burger King Worldwide for Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures. The promotion is scheduled to begin in January 2014 and run for six to eight weeks in company-owned and participating franchised Burger King restaurants. Guests who purchase a BK Kids Meal at participating restaurants will receive one of six themed toys with their meal.

  ITV Studios Reinvents Classic Thunderbirds 50 Years Later

ITV Studios will reinvent the Classic Thunderbirds series 50 years after its first television debut. ITV Studios and New Zealand-based Pukeko Pictures, in collaboration with Weta Workshop, will co-produce Thunderbirds are Go! (working title), a 26 x 30-minute children's series set to debut on ITV and UK's CITV Channel in 2015. This reinvention of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's series will be produced using a mix of CGI-animation and live-action model sets.

Thunderbirds are Go! will be executive produced by Estelle Hughes for ITV Studios, Giles Ridge for ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVS GE), and Richard Taylor and Andrew Smith for Pukeko Pictures. The head writer of the series is Rob Hoegee (Generator Rex, Teen Titans, Ben 10, Slugterra).

  Sony Pictures Consumer Products Signs Licensees for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is coming to theaters worldwide beginning on August 23. City of Bones is the first in the series of the bestselling books by Cassandra Clare, which has sold more 14 million units globally.

Sony Pictures Consumer Products has signed global licensees for the brand, including Simon and Schuster (English-based movie tie-in paperback books for sale globally), Pyramid Posters (posters, wall décor, stickers, tattoos, and other impulse items for EU, Australia, and New Zealand), Laurelle Perfumes (two perfumes will launch outside of the U.S. and Canada), and Sunset International / Bioworld (nightwear, underwear, and outerwear).

U.S.-based licensees include Tripp NYC (apparel), PlayFirst (app), Running Press Book Publishers (Mega Mini Kits that hold 12 temporary tattoos, pendants, magnets, and 32-page mini booklets of quotes and images from the film), Trends International (wall calendars, paper and lenticular posters, bookmarks, and stickers), Mead Products (high-end journals and sketchbooks), Leaf Trading Cards (movie trading cards), Rubie's Costume Co. (costumes, masks, and dress-up sets), Tonner Doll Company (collectible fashion dolls), and Underground Toys, which is known internationally as Gear 4 Games (notebooks, replicas, tattoo sleeves, magnets, mugs, mobile cases, stickers, temporary tattoos, sketchbooks, and buttons).

EMEA-based licensees include Flash Trash (jewelry), Urban Species (apparel), Mantiburi Gmbh (wall-based room decor and wallpapers), and KV&G Verlag (posters and calendars).

  Copyrights Announces New Board Members

Copyrights has announced the appointment of Polly Emery and Rachel Clarke to its board of directors.

Polly Emery currently holds the title of brand and marketing director and has been managing the Copyrights portfolio of brands since 2009. Emery has previously held senior brand and marketing positions at Chorion, Entertainment Rights, and HIT, including five years in their New York office. Emery will continue to lead the brand development and marketing activities of Copyrights both in the UK and internationally.

Clarke has been working on the UK licensing of Copyrights' properties since January 2007, latterly as UK licensing manager. She previously held licensing positions at Chorion, HIT, and Hallmark. As a member of the board of Copyrights, Clarke will take the new title of UK licensing director.

  Big Idea Entertainment to Release New VeggieTales DVD in March

Big Idea Entertainment will release an all-new DVD title, VeggieTales: the Little House that Stood, on March 2 at Christian retailers and March 5 at general retail stores. VeggieTales: the Little House that Stood features characters Bob, Larry, Junior Asparagus, The French Peas, and Madame Blueberry, among others. This DVD parodies nursery rhymes with a VeggieTales twist. Families will learn the story of the wise and foolish builders through the Veggie version of "The Three Little Pigs." Additionally, the story of Humpty Dumpty is re-told in the good neighbor parable "The Good Egg of Gooseville." The DVD also features new silly songs, including "Happy Tooth Day" and "The History of Mother Goose."

  BBC's Ben Stephenson to Keynote at MIP

BBC Controller of Drama Ben Stephenson will provide the keynote speech at MIPTV in April. The opening speech will be presented on Monday, April 8 at MIPTV's second annual Drama Co-Production Summit. Stephenson is noted for bringing several hits to the BBC channels, including Call the Midwife, Line of Duty, Sherlock, and Luther.

  DCD Concludes Deal for Duchess of Northumberland

DCD Publishing has licensed the rights of the Duchess of Northumberland to preserve producers The Mercers to launch the brand's first food range. The first three products under the licensing agreement will include a fine cut and a thick cut seville orange and lemon marmalade, and a clear quince marmalade. These products are expected to be on the shelves early this summer and the range will develop in the future to incorporate more marmalades, conserves, and chutney products.

  Cloudbabies Sign Three New Publishing Partners

Hoho Rights, the commercial arm of kids' production company Hoho Entertainment, has signed three new publishing partners for its preschool property Cloudbabies. In an extension of its existing partnership with Immediate Media Company, Hoho has now agreed to a further license with the publisher to create a magazine app, bringing the paper-based magazine content to the digital market. Cloudbabies has featured in CBeebies Weekly magazine since its launch, and a dedicated Cloudbabies special is planned for the spring.

In addition, an app license has been secured with Studio Liddell, the studio behind the animation of the CBeebies show. Inspired by the Cloudbabies' characteristics and drawing on some key themes from the show, the app will focus on games and music for preschoolers. Hoho Rights has also teamed up with Century Books to publish a Cloudbabies annual, due to hit shelves this fall.

  Great British Bake Off Finalist Visits Spring Fair

Brendan Lynch, finalist from last year's series of The Great British Bake Off, visited Ethos International’s stand at Spring Fair to celebrate the launch of the new bakeware and food preparation range, produced under license from the TV series.

Brendan made the final of the third series of the BAFTA-winning BBC Two program, which was watched by more than 7.2 million people. Ethos International has worked alongside television producers Love Productions to create an initial range of 43 bakeware and food preparation items under The Great British Bake Off brand.

  Spring Fair Showcases Record Number of RSPCA Partners

Animal welfare charity the RSPCA will have more licensing partners than it has ever had at this year's Spring Fair. Wow Toys, Benchmark Brands, Rayware, SERT-MST, Noel Tatt, Hallmark, Special Editions (UK Greetings), Brown Trout, and Aurora will be showing RSPCA-branded products or promoting future RSPCA output on their stands at Spring Fair International 2013 at Birmingham's NEC.

As well as raising valuable funds for the RSPCA, all licensed products contain the RSPCA logo and a message about the charity's work. In addition to the new licensing partners, the RSPCA is looking at, or has already signed, deals in such areas as apparel, giftware, toys, housewares, stationery, publishing, pet food, wild animal food, and pet accessories.

  Warner Bros. Partners with Park Leisure

Warner Bros. Consumer Products UK (WBCP UK) has announced details of a partnership with Park Leisure Ltd. that will see its DC Super Heroes and classic Looney Tunes characters used on a range of themed outdoor play equipment and branded sports and play zones.

Park Leisure has designed an extensive play range that features the DC Comics Super Heroes, including Superman, Batman, and The Flash from the new licensing program DC Super Friends, in addition to Bugs Bunny, Wile E Coyote, and Taz from WBCP's Looney Tunes Active licensing initiative, which positions the Looney Tunes characters as ambassadors for fitness. Park Leisure will provide local authorities, schools, holiday and theme parks, leisure centers, and a range of other destination venues featuring character-based outdoor play and sports equipment for children of all ages.

  The Joester Loria Group Brokers New Deals for Car and Driver, Road & Track

The Joester Loria Group, licensing agent for Heart publications' Car and Driver and Road & Track, has secured a deal for die-cast vehicles for both brands and automotive accessories for the Car and Driver brand.

Round 2 LLC will replicate die-cast automotive vehicles featured on the publications' most popular historical covers. The first collection launched in the fourth quarter of 2012 with additional products to be introduced at American International Toy Fair.

In addition, Argento SC, a gift and electronics company, will develop a collection of quality automotive accessories for the Car and Driver brand. The range of products will include air compressors, emergency kits, detailing kits, tire pressure gauges, mobile electronic mounts, car vacuums, vehicle storage, and organizational accessories. The products are scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of this year at mass, mid-tier, and department store retailers.

  Several Deals Signed for Totally Spies!

Zodiak Kids has secured a raft of sales for the sixth season of Totally Spies! with Teletoon Canada, DeA Kids Italy, and MBC now on board. With the latest season, the series now totals 156 x 26-minute episodes. Totally Spies! has aired in more than 200 territories worldwide and is a Marathon Media production for TF1. All TV rights are handled by Zodiak Kids while CP rights are managed by Zodiak Kids CP Paris.

  Chewits Becomes a Licensed Brand

Chewits, the British confectionery brand owned by Leaf U.K., plans to extend the brand into licensing categories. Beanstalk will represent the brand. First established in the U.K. in 1965, the true heritage confectionery brand is in double-digit growth and is ranked one of the top 50 FMCG Facebook brands in the U.K. with more than 300,000 Facebook fans. Leaf U.K. and Beanstalk plan to extend the Chewits brand into close-to-core food and non-food categories, which leverage all the fun, flavor, and legendary “chew factor” of Chewits.

  Grani&Partners Previews Products at Nuremberg

Grani&Partners used Nuremberg's International Toy Fair as an opportunity to give the international market a preview of its new range of articles for this year. Grani&Partners has been working and building relationships with companies and groups based in 33 different countries worldwide, specifically in South America, the U.S., and Europe. These include Chupa Chups, Confitrade, Cremonini Group, Danone, DeAgostini Group, Eaglemoss, Granarolo, Kellogg's Italia, Kinnerton, McDonald's, Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, RCS Group, RTI (Mediaset Group), Warner Village, World Sweet and a hundred or so other names.

New promotional product plans include an assortment of products designed specifically for licenses such as Hello Kitty, SpongeBob, and The Smurfs (classic and movie), for which the company has earned itself the title of Preferred Premium Supplier for the EMEA region.

Figurines have always been one of the company's strongest products and this year, the range of offerings will include new collections dedicated to Angry Birds, Minnie, Spongebob, and the Marvel heroes—particularly the Avengers and Iron Man. Le Velocissime will also be back on the market as the collection of Moto GP-inspired mini motorbikes reaches its third series, as will Stikeez.

  Marc Schneider Joins Beanstalk as Chief Financial and Operating Officer

Beanstalk has appointed finance veteran Marc Schneider as CFO. In his role, Schneider will be responsible for all aspects of Beanstalk's global finance and operations including overseeing management of the agency's financial systems and platforms. Schneider will also be the primary liaison to the corporate financial team of Omnicom Group, Beanstalk's parent company.

Schneider will work directly with CEO Michael Stone and other leaders at Beanstalk to facilitate short-term and long-range strategic planning activities across the company to grow Beanstalk in the U.S. and internationally.

Schneider began his career at CBS Inc. where he held various finance positions focused on sales forecasting and analysis for the network's programming. Schneider then moved to Sesame Workshop where he spent 15 years. He served as chief financial and administrative officer of global consumer products and international TV. Schneider also spent time at HIT Entertainment as the senior vice president and general manager for live events and themed attractions. Most recently, he managed his own consulting practice, Linchpin Consulting Group LLC, providing business development and financial and management services to diverse companies.
