LIMA to Induct Three Industry Veterans into Licensing Hall of Fame

For the first time in 25 years, the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA) will name a trio of industry executives to the Licensing Hall of Fame in the same year. The honorees are Allan Feldman, CEO and founder of LMCA; Dell Furano, CEO and founder of Epic Rights; and Cyril Speijer, former CEO of Wavery Productions B.V. and current co-principal of BN Licensing B.V. This year’s Hall of Fame Induction takes place Tuesday, May 23, at the LIMA Licensing Awards Ceremony during Licensing Expo 2017 in Las Vegas.

Candidates for the Licensing Hall of Fame must demonstrate continual and outstanding contributions to the licensing industry. Consideration is given to those who have been actively involved in the business of licensing for a minimum of 15 years and whose contributions have ongoing relevance to the industry.

With more than 40 years in the business, Allan Feldman is credited with being first to bring trademark licensing into industrial products. Feldman also started LMCA in 1986 and his client roster included brands such as AT&T, Craftsman, Del Monte, Frigidaire, United Airlines, and American Diabetes Association, among many others. Feldman served on two LIMA committees, and is a member of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) and International Trademark Association (INTA). He is a board member of the U.S Department of Commerce’s New York District Export Council (NYDEC) and the Intellectual Property Management Institute, and is on the advisory board of The Licensing Journal. Feldman was a member of LIMA’s first delegation to China and helped bring the organization and licensing to Asia.

Zodiak Sells Titles to Amazon India

Zodiak Kids has announced it has sold a raft of titles to Amazon India, in a deal amassing over 100 hours.

Amazon India has acquired all four seasons of popular children’s animation Horrid Henry.

Henry looks at life from the bottom up, and from where he stands it's him against the rest of the world. So if that means getting out of swimming class by pretending there's a shark in the pool, organizing an anti-school uniform campaign with his friends or setting up a pet sitting business in his bedroom to supplement his measly allowance, then that's all part of life as Henry knows it. Horrid Henry is produced by Novel Entertainment Ltd for CiTV.

Speaking on the partnership, Nitesh Kripalani, Director and Country Head, Amazon Prime Video India said, “We are extremely happy to announce our collaboration with Zodiak Kids by bringing immensely popular characters like Horrid Henry to India. This alliance adds further volume to our existing bouquet of great kids’ programming, thus paving the way for us to have the largest exclusive selection of kids’ entertainment in India.”

Amazon India has also picked up animation series’ Extreme Football, Street Football and Sally Bollywood the Bollywood tastic mystery solving show. All series are produced by Zodiak Kids Studios. The shows are set to launch on Amazon Prime Video in early 2017.

New Study Shows Generation Z Still Shops in Brick-and-Mortar Stores

Despite expectations that the first digitally native generation wants to shop online, a new study released by IBM and the National Retail Federation (NRF) found that almost all members of Generation Z (GenZ) prefer to shop in brick-and-mortar stores. With the global Gen Z population set to reach 2.6 billion by 2020, retailers need to create a more interactive engagement around their brands, according to the study. The study is based on findings from more than 15,000 consumers ages 12 to 21 from 16 countries.

The new generation is important to retailers because it has access to $44 billion in buying power, with 75 percent saying they spend more than half of the money that is available to them each month. The study found 52 percent of Gen Z consumers will transfer loyalty from one brand to another if the brand’s quality is not up to par.

The study also found 74 percent of respondents spend their free time online, with 25 percent online five hours or more each day. The degree to which in-store sales are influenced by digital is inevitable in today’s shopping journey—and continues to grow. Seventy-three percent of Gen Z uses their phones primarily to text and chat with family and friends, but are willing to extend their conversations to brand relationships; 36 percent would create digital content for a brand; 42 percent would participate in an online game for a campaign; 43 percent would participate in a product review; 62 percent will not use apps or websites that are difficult to navigate; 60 percent will not use apps or websites that are slow to load. They also want to know how their personal information will be protected.

Withit World Debuts

Withit Studios, a UK based company known to the Licensing industry for 25-years now have announced the launch of their licensing agency venture – Withit World. With this the “Licensor” has entered the competitive world of the agencies where they would aim to develop a globally sustainable business strategy, not just for their own brands but also for a host of other IPs, especially from Asia. Based out of the UAE, Withit World would act as a Licensing Arm for the parent company Withit Studios in Asia Pacific, Middle East & North African markets. Formed by Dolph Zahid in 1991, Withit Studios tasted success in the UK running a successful franchise network of its own branded retail stores for apparel and accessories of licensed brands. Enjoying its journey as a retailer, a sheer accident introduced it to the world of licensing in 2001 and the rest is history.

Having worked with almost all major retailers in UK and Europe, either directly or through a network of licensees across the globe, Withit Studios developed some key properties and soon emerged an array of character brands such as Joey & Joy, Kitties in the Cities, Phizzogs, Doodle Boos, Glitzy and many more. Each of these character brands have strong design banks with solid digital marketing & digital programs being worked out around them.

“The idea to set up a licensing agency has been on our minds for quite some time. By the end of 2016 we sensed a good opportunity and decided to take the leap and expand. With a fully operational base in Brighton and now an extended arm in UAE we will be able to focus on Europe and Asia Pacific / MENA region in a more strategic manner,” says Dolph Zahid, Founder and Managing Director of Withit Studios.

We are looking forward to embarking on this new venture and watching how children engage with Bush Baby World across multiple platforms."

Martin Lowde of Brands with Influence explained their role in exec producing the new series. “We have seen how effective online animation and streaming can be for building brands and driving children’s engagement with toys. When we developed the Bush Baby proposition we always saw it as a televisual concept. JOB POSTING

Executive Seeks New Challenges

I have 8 years experience of working for a large London Publishing house licensing book content to third parties. I am looking for a role which utilises my skills in negotiation and relationship building and can develop my experience within the licensing field. Having licensed book content to a wide variety of customers from national Newspapers to international Publishers I would relish the experience to work in a new industry, licensing new content to new clients.

I realise that a move across from traditional publishing may mean a step down from the managerial role I was in before. I'm enthusiastic to work in a new industry and feel my skills are easily transferable and am happy to look outside licensing roles also.
