Epic Rights Expands its Music Roster

epic rightsEpic Rights has expanded its client roster through new representation agreements with music artists such as Def Leppard, Billy Idol, Chicago, Doobie Brothers, Cinderella, Whitesnake, Jeff Beck, Jefferson Airplane, T. Rex, Velvet Revolver, and Yes. Epic Rights has also finalized multi-artists licensing agreements with select, top-tier U.S. apparel licensees to develop fashion apparel programs for the brands.
 
The licensees appointed by Epic Rights include Lauren Moshi, Retro Brands, Mighty Fine, Jerry Leigh, Life Clothing, Trevco, and Impact, which will introduce rock apparel clothing lines, including T-shirts, fashion tops, knits, hoodies, sweatshirts, dresses, leggings, loungewear, and more, by utilizing expanded photo and creative assets, as well as great graphic elements. The new apparel will debut across a broad range of retail channels throughout the U.S. beginning this spring. 

DreamWorks Names Licensing Agent for Steven Spielberg’s The BFG

DreamWorks Studios has tapped Striker Entertainment to serve as licensing agent for the upcoming Steven Spielberg live-action version of Roald Dahl’s children’s novel The BFG. Striker will handle North American licensing and worldwide deals for toys, video games, and other categories. eOne is the licensing agent for the U.K. and the European Union.
 
Spielberg will start production on The BFG this year, and it is due in theaters July 1, 2016. Disney is distributing domestically and in a few international markets. Master Smith Entertainment is handling international distribution for much of the rest of the world. Reliance will distribute in India.
 
The BFG is about a little girl who becomes an international hero when she causes a man-eating giant to be captured.

Hallmark, Mattel Sign Licensing Agreement

hallmark mattel licensing dealHallmark and Mattel have signed a licensing agreement to bring the Barbie brand license back to Hallmark this year. In the contract, Hallmark has the rights to create Barbie holiday ornaments and plush products in the U.S. and Canada. The products will have a broad distribution through multiple retail channels, with exclusive items in the nationwide network of Hallmark Gold Crown stores.
 
The first new Barbie products will appear in stores for Keepsake Ornament Premiere in July. Although products are still in development, planned products include eight Barbie keepsake ornaments, the Barbie doll as a pint-sized plush, and other Hallmark-branded ornaments available during the holiday season.
 
In addition, the new licensing agreement includes rights for Hallmark to create products with the Mattel properties Monster High, Ever After High, and Hot Wheels.

GBI Signs Three New Licensees for Psycho Bunny

psycho bunnyGenius Brands International (GBI) and A Squared Entertainment, its wholly owned subsidiary, have signed three licensees for fashion apparel and lifestyle brand Psycho Bunny: hosiery from Leg Resource Inc., footwear from S3, and headwear from JRM Accessories.
 
Psycho Bunny socks will be available from Legwear Resource, and the company will take over the existing men’s hosiery business that was previously manufactured by the brand, along with expanding the line with new product introductions. The Psycho Bunny fall collection from S3 will focus on the active lifestyle category of sneakers and driving moccasins. JRM Accessories will create a headwear line for the brand that will launch this spring. Categories will include flat-brimmed hats with floral print designs as well as traditional curved caps.
 
GBI seeks partners to expand the brand into additional product lines, including outerwear, denim, bags, luggage, women’s and children’s clothing, active wear, accessories, fragrance, electronics, and more. The company will also manage the launch of Psycho Bunny outside of the U.S. and is in discussions with potential partners in Asia, Europe, and South America.

LIMA to Present Three New Webinars

The International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA) kicks off its 30th anniversary year with a trio of webinars on January 14, January 28, and February 11, each starting at noon. The sessions will be free for LIMA members and registration is $200 for non-members.
 
On January 14, “Anatomy of a Licensing Agreement” will offer guidance on key elements of a licensing agreement, spotlighting the importance and significance of each element. Licensing Hall of Famer Greg Battersby will lead the session. On January 28, “How to Build a Licensing Plan” will give specific guidelines and tips for licensing professionals on how to develop detailed plans for their properties and products. On February 11, “The Ins and Outs of Building a DTR” will answer questions on direct-to-retail licensing.

Crown Crafts, Zutano Partner for Bedding and Nursery Product Line

Crown Crafts Infant Products has signed a licensing agreement with Zutano to develop, market, and distribute a new line of infant bedding, bibs, bath, and room décor products. The new line is expected to launch this year and will feature contemporary, playful, and colorful designs.

Laura Ashley Expands Range with Beatrice Home

Laura Ashley is expanding on the success of its ready-made curtain collection and is looking to its current licensing partner, Beatrice Home fashions, to develop a range of table linens. The new Laura Ashley collection will include tablecloths, runners, napkins, placemats, napkin rings, and chair pads to debut in department and specialty stores in the spring.

GBI, Baby Genius Expand Retail Program

GBIGenius Brands International Inc. (GBI) will recreate and relaunch the Baby Genius brand later this year. Zak Designs Inc. and Manhattan Toy have joined the roster of new licensees.

Zak Designs will develop a line of mealtime products that will allow toddlers to enjoy the fun enrichment of Baby Genius at every meal. The line will include an assortment of sippy cups, plates, bowls, and flatware that are BPA-free and designed specifically for this age group. Manhattan Toy will create a new line of Baby Genius soft toys and developmental toys for babies and toddlers, including activity toys, wooden puzzles, puppets, play sets, and more. Manhattan Toy Baby Genius products will be available at retail this fall.
 
Zak Designs and Manhattan Toy join other recently announced Baby Genius’ licensees, including LeapFrog, which launched the first Baby Genius content available on the LeapPad line of kids’ learning tablets, and PBS Distribution, which will deliver Baby Genius content this year across various platforms to major retail outlets.

Air Bud Entertainment Launches Air Bud TV

Air Bud Entertainment has launched a new YouTube channel, Air Bud TV. The company, known for the Air Bud and Air Buddies franchises, launched the brand with original, new, short-form content and a TV series, in addition to sneak peaks of its family-friendly films.
 
Air Bud TV will feature regular programming, such as Animal Sing-alongs; weekly series, such as Puppy Preschool; and The Bubble Bath Boys.

Target, Lilly Pulitzer Collaborate for New Design Collection 

lilly pulitzerTarget will bring the iconic American resort wear brand Lilly Pulitzer to stores on April 19. The 250-piece collection will include apparel, accessories, and shoes for women and girls, as well as home accents, outdoor entertaining accessories, beach gear, travel essentials, and more, and will be featured in 15 exclusive prints. The limited-edition collection will be available exclusively at Target stores in the U.S. and Canada and on target.com.

Nelvana and d-rights Partner for Battle of the Planets: Phoenix Ninjas

nelvanaCorus Entertainment’s Nelvana and d-rights, two key partners behind Beyblade, are teaming up again to develop Battle of the Planets: Phoenix Ninjas (tentative title), a re-imagination of the classic Japanese hit Battle of the Planets.
 
“We’re thrilled to be working with d-rights on a new version of Battle of the Planets, which has a devoted worldwide fan base,” said Andrew Kerr, co-head, Nelvana Enterprises. “This classic property has endured with fans and we are ready to reach out to a new generation of kids. The series will be new, but will feature the same big action stories and compelling characters.”

FremantleMedia Signs Master Toy Deal with Jazwares for Tree Fu Tom

FremantleJazwares has been granted the master toy rights for FremantleMedia Kids & Family Entertainment’s preschool series Tree Fu Tom. Under the terms of the deal, Jazwares will take on the role of global manufacturer and will distribute a new line of Tree Fu Tom toys in the UK, Asia, North America, Canada, and Latin America. A wide variety of distributors will manage the line in key territories.
 
The first products, which Funtastic will distribute, will launch at retail in Australia this summer. The wider product rollout will continue in the UK and other key territories. The initial line includes vehicles, figures, and a carry case play set.

Care Bears, Krizia Robustella Partner for Apparel Line

American Greetings Properties and Krizia Robustella have partnered for an apparel collaboration for the Care Bears brand. Robustella will design embroidered and silkscreen printed T-shirts, sweatshirts, trousers, dresses, skirts, and blouses. The collection will debut in fashion specialty clothing stores throughout Spain in September.

BBC Worldwide Announces Channel Launches in the Nordics

BBC Worldwide has announced new channel launches for BBC Brit and BBC Earth in the Nordics.
 
The brands will launch in Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Iceland from April 2015, replacing BBC Entertainment and BBC knowledge, although BBC Lifestyle and BBC HD will still be available.  The brands will launch as linear channels in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Iceland from April 2015, replacing BBC Entertainment and BBC Knowledge in the Nordic region. BBC Lifestyle and BBC HD will continue to be available.
 
Tobi de Graaff, Executive VP for Western Europe, BBC Worldwide comments: “These new channel brands were borne out of audience research that told us exactly what our fans want from BBC Worldwide. I am delighted that audiences in the region will now have dedicated spaces for territory premieres of Top Gear and some of the best natural history and premium factual content anywhere in the world.”

David Walliams and HarperCollins Join Forces for Comic Relief

David Williams David Walliams has written an exclusive children’s picture book especially for Comic Relief, giving all of his proceeds from the book to the charity.

The Queen’s Orang-Utan will be published on 26th February 2015, ahead of Red Nose Day on 13th March. Global publisher, HarperCollins UK, will also donate all profits from the publishing of the book.

David Walliams is an honorary trustee of Comic Relief, a charity for which he has personally raised millions – most notably swimming the English Channel in 2006 and the River Thames in 2011. He published his debut children’s book in 2008.

Sony Signs Up for Matt Hatter Global Music Rights

The soundtrack to the CG animated series is composed by Youki Yamamoto, who has worked on numerous films from Hollywood blockbusters such as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Nanny McPhee to art house movies, and is distinct by its cinematic rock-guitar riff and epic opening title score.
 
Howard Price, Director, Broadcast & Media Rights at Sony/ATV Music commented, “We’re extremely pleased to be working with Nigel Stone and the team at Platinum Films and on such a strong property as ‘Matt Hatter’ whose global resonance continues to grow. Youki Yamamoto's music is known by fans of Matt Hatter around the world and we will be working with Platinum Films to fully realise the licensing opportunities the music presents."

Gruffalo Food and Drinks Range Announced

magic light the gruffMagic Light Pictures has announced a new Gruffalo food and drinks range for children and families.
 
Building on the success of the moulded chocolate Gruffalo, a range of potato snacks, low calorie natural juice drinks and 3D celebration cakes will launch throughout 2015. Magic Light is also looking at opportunities within the fresh and chilled sectors, along with confectionery and the Owl Ice Cream and Gruffalo Crumble.
 
To create the range the company, together with its agent TLC, has selected partners including Kolak Snack Food, Appy Food and Drinks, and Park Cakes.

Warner Bros. Announces Third Successful Looney Tunes Jr. NBA Clinic

Warner Bros NBAWarner Bros. Consumer Products EMEA, in partnership with the National Basketball Association (NBA) is celebrating the success of the third Looney Tunes Jr. NBA Clinic that took place at Imperial College, London on 12 January.
 
The date was strategically planned to coincide with the 2015 edition of NBA’s Global Games that takes place on 15 January at the O2 between the Milwaukee Bucks and the New York Knicks. These clinics are a key element of WBCP’s multiyear initiative with the NBA that sees the iconic Looney Tunes characters featured across consumer products, events and promotional campaigns with the aim of driving interest and participation in basketball amongst children aged 4-12.
 
Looney Tunes Active! and Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA co-branded basketball clinics take place at select NBA events across Europe.

Turner Announced as Mr Bean Agent, Asia

Mr. Bean AsiaTiger Aspect Productions (an Endemol Shine Company) has appointed Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific as its exclusive licensing agent in Asia for Mr Bean, effective immediately.
 
Turner Asia Pacific’s dedicated licensing division – Cartoon Network Enterprises – is tasked with driving licensing activity for Mr Bean for the next three years and will represent the brand in key markets in Southeast Asia, as well as India.
 
The next 12 months will be a landmark year for the franchise. In 2015, Mr Bean celebrates its 25th anniversary. The second installment of The Mr Bean Animated Series is also set to debut in Asia Pacific in April, broadcast on Turner’s kids’ channels including on Boomerang in Southeast Asia and Australia, on Cartoon Network in Japan and on POGO in India.

Macau Destination Resort Sees Character and Celebrity Endorsements

Melco Crown Entertainment Limited, a developer, owner and operator of casino gaming and entertainment resort facilities in Asia, unveiled details of its new cinematically-themed gaming, entertainment and leisure destination resort in Macau: Studio City.
 
The US$3.2 billion, Hollywood-inspired, gaming and entertainment complex will transport the visitor into a stunning cinematic world with awe-inspiring entertainment offerings, delivered by the world’s leading entertainment partners, positioning this new destination resort as Asia’s entertainment capital.
 
Studio City will encompass international and Asian leisure-destination inspired entertainment, supported and endorsed by icons of Hollywood’s entertainment industry.
 
A new film trailer promoting The Audition – a special short-movie set around a Studio City storyline which marks the very first time Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Brad Pitt have all starred together under the director Martin Scorsese – was provided at the unveiling event in Macau, China.
 
There is also a collaboration to bring the portfolio of some of the most iconic DC Comics’ Super Heroes and Warner Bros.’ classic characters to life, together with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment. Batman Dark Flight is a virtual-reality ride that will allow fans of the Caped Crusader to soar over Gotham City, and there will also be a Warner Bros. Family Entertainment Center.

LATIN AMERICA

Imira Signs Latin America Deals

ImiraImira Entertainment has signed deals throughout Latin America for its catalogue titles ahead of NATPE 2015 market.
 
In Chile, Imira Entertainment has sold Magic Beyond Words, a one-off biopic looking at the life of beloved Harry Potter author JK Rowling, to ChileVision, and Season 2 of the eco-conscious forest gang in Yoohoo & Friends has been scooped up by Cartoon Network Latin America, while the first season of the show will air in Mexico through a deal with Canal Once.  Imira has secured a renewal from local Chilean broadcaster UCV TV for classic animation The Smurfs and also sold its health-centred preschool series Vitaminix to Chile’s Novasur.
 
Horatio & The Plasticines has sold to US Hispanic network HITN, to Mexico’s Canal Once, Señal Colombia and to Ecuador TV; while Saari will continue to air on Canal Once in Mexico through a renewal deal.
 
Imira Entertainment will also be representing for the first time this NATPE a range of its parent company Toonz Entertainment’s properties.
